AC Hydraulic WJN10 Engine Hoist

I've been wanting to replace my old 3 ton engine hoist with one that folds up to save room. I've looked at the normal 2 ton fold up ones like Harbor Freight but I just never was fully happy with that style. I recently found the AC Hydraulic WJN10 and it's just what I've been looking for.

Only problem is they aren't cheap and it's hard to find them in the US. I got a quote from AME International for $875.00 plus $150.08 shipping from FL to NJ. I'm having trouble pulling the trigger for something I hardly ever use for that much money. The freight alone will almost buy a HF one. The argument my buddy gives me is that 99% of the time it's folded up and that's the biggest positive of this lift is how compact it folds. So I'm paying for it not being in the way. I am not the guy who borrows tools when I need them. I want my own stuff so when I need it I have it.

Should I just stop cheaping out and buy it or am I right for thinking this over so much? I like good quality tools and have no problem investing in them but for some reason this one has me thinking twice. Is there a cheaper place to buy one?

If you can find me one that folds up this small I'll be thrilled.

It's hard to get good dimensions but best I can tell the AC one takes up about 1 sq/ft vs the HF style at almost 6 sq/ft

Who knows?
Wow! That's a nice piece!

I'd love to have one that small, but personally I couldn't justify the cost.

If your shop is small though, I could see space being at an absolute premium.

I want to very badly but the money is just so much more. There has to be a cheaper place to get it.

A quick google search found one at $639. I have no clue about the quality of the seller.

Northern Tool looks to have one that has a slightly bigger foot print. Definitely smaller than the HF one though.

I just called them and they have to call me back with a shipping quote.

There are two hoists in that ad... One for $640 is 1200 pound capacity, and the one for $850 is 2200 pound capacity.

For comparison, the typical HF $200 hoist is 4000 pound capacity in the retracted position. When fully extended, the capacity is reduced to 1000 pounds capacity..
The capacity of the WJN10 would likely be similar, and that 2200 pound capacity would likely be reduced to around 550 pounds when fully extended.. Will that be enough capacity for Your needs?

might be raining on the parade, but I tried not to hail.:(

When mentioning a three ton hoist in Your first post, was the three ton in reference to the jack on the hoist, or the capacity of the hoist itself? There are some light duty hoists with a three ton jack, and I DO own a commercial hoist that is rated for three ton, so either one is possible.

I have a 3 ton hoist at home but I've never needed that strong of one it was just given to me.

The WJN10 is the one I'm interested in vs the WJN5 to be rated for my occasional needs. It looks like it's rated at 700 kg all the way out which is about 1,500 lbs vs 1,000 lbs for the HF.

I feel like the room I will save going with one like the HF one will not be worth the strength and stability I'll give up going from my non foldable 3 ton one. The AC one measures 14"x15" floor space when folded up vs about 25"x31" for a typical 2 ton foldable unit. Now that kind of space savings is worth giving up strength, but at what cost???

Those capacity figures reflect a well constructed piece of equipment.. Too bad the shipping would also be so costly..

They ended up matching pelicans price for $850 plus shipping so I pulled the trigger for $1,000 to the door.

$1000 might seem like allot of money compared to the HF group of hoists; but I believe that You are going to get a quality product that will do it's job well. That is where much of the true value is.

Good to hear There wasn't added shipping expenses due to the boat ride from Denmark

With cast iron heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, with a trans (T400?), I'm thinking closer to 900 lbs.

Very close to that,, and with a heavy duty four speed manual with clutch, pressure plate and bell housing would also be close to 900 lbs.

Of course, We are speaking of car and pickup or light duty truck assemblies.

Medium (40-70 series) and heavy duty (80-90 Series) big block "truck" engines and transmission assemblies would be a different story.

Little update on my AC hoist.

I’m needing to pull the engine from my f-150 but the boom is just a hair too short to reach. It has 5 positions rated for the following capacities

2420 lbs hole #1
2200 lbs hole #2
1980 lbs hole #3
1760 lbs hole #4
1540 lbs hole #5

Each hole is approximately 4.125” apart and the capacity drops 220 lbs for each hole consistently. So with my my best educated guess if I could make a longer boom with two more holes at the same spacing I would be able to reach 8-1/4” further out and be able to lift about 1100 lbs. The engine weighs far less than that so I don’t see it being a problem.

The telescoping boom is a metric size 80mm x 40mm x 4mm (3.15”x1.57”x0.157”) but I was able to get a little bigger piece for some added strength to slide in there (3.5”x1.5”x0.187”)

I dropped the new boom and hook off at the powdercoater today to have them color matched!

I mention it because I added a hook with a slight extension to the end of the boom to my Hoyer lift, which is like a mini hoist. Sometimes when using it it tends to try to lift the rear wheels off the ground. Good luck.

Don't know, usually not sure what I'm picking up weighs, just that I don't want to/can't lift it by hand. The thing with the little Hoyer lifts it seems like the hydraulics are stronger than the frame, so you don't know it's overloaded till it starts to bend.
