Run off house service or new service?

Building a new garage which is about 150 feet from meter on house which has a 200 amp service. Also need to feed a barn off the garage that a small 220 compressor can be used at least, it is about 100 feet from garage.

I want to be able to run a 60 gallon air compressor in the garage, 220 welder and going to have a finished room that will probably put a ac unit in.

I am leaning towards putting a separate service in to it, any thoughts?

Wire from house would have to go under a gravel drive to access garage and the barn feed off garage is about 300 feet from house.

I just don't want to create a hazard. One local electrician says running off the house would be ok, another says not to.

I would look into how difficult it would be to get a separate service. Some cities won't allow two feeds to one property though that may not apply to farms, and it could be very expensive so worth calling the hydro company. Can't comment on the electrical load side of things.

It is $250 for the service plus what ever it cost to install, $1500 is what most have quoted. I know there would be considerable costs to run wire and conduit that far from the house. Our electric coop also charges a slightly higher rate for non-residential services. It might be a little cheaper initially to run off the house and a slightly lower monthly bill overall than the 2 combined bills. I guess the load or voltage drop concerns me as much as anything.

I ran 125' to my shop because the co-op wants $35/mth minimum billing for a meter. $35/mth paid for the wire, etc pretty dang quick.

Why would you have a voltage drop with the proper cable ..... we have a bill charge ... you would have to add that up over the years .. see when the lines cross.

I could have run two services -- I'm doing one as the construction makes running the cables easier. Mine would have been $200 a year extra for the second bill .. I also decided on a generator.

I have LGE/KU I have a separate service to my barn, there is a meter service charge and I think the usage is .01 cent more per KWH than the residential charge.
I have a refrigerator plugged in and outdoor lighting around my barn and the driveway, security cameras, my bill runs $40 ish a month. I tore down an old farmhouse that was on my property and wanted to have electric until I can get a new house built there (might be several years) I did not get any installation charges from LGE/KU and they even changed the transformer at the pole

Is the house 1600sq ft or 4000 sq ft? If its closer to the smaller then I would put my money in the ground as wire instead of paying the power company a monthly neverending bill for the privilege of using their extra meter. Run a 100 or 125a service to the garage and subpanel at the barn.

The big disadvantage to a separate meter is the wife will no how much the bill is for the shop. Don't ask me how I know this. LOL

Bring your car in for service at the dealer one time for something you could do yourself. Show her the difference in price and you also get a few hours of fun wrenching away.
That math will quiet her down a little.

Nevermind how much money you save drinking at home in the shop instead of at the bar!

Tom-ky,

I'm in Owensboro and decided to run two separate services. My factors were:

100amp at the house, originally it had mid/late 50's circuit breakers costing around $25 ea to replace. That's upgraded and a different story.

wanted 200amp for the shop

monthly charge is only $10.00

the shop was less than 10 ft from the pole

Owensboro Municipal Utilities and the building inspector were easy to work with.

If I decided to go with one feed I'd go from the shop to the house.

I'd ask at Planning & Zoning and/or the electrical co-op to find out how they would view the two feed set up.

This was my scenario too, except my minimum monthly bill was $50!

The service was already installed when I bought the place. I waited an embarrassing number of years before I cancelled it and connected my shop to the house and enjoyed the savings. Plus, while I had the trench open I ran another conduit full of other goodies (cable, phone, ethernet, etc).
