Radio Shack Closing - Parts Drawers

There is a local Radio Shack corporate store that is closing. They have 20-50% off signs up so I stopped in to take a look. Didn't see any great deals but their parts drawers caught my eye. I asked the young girl working there about them and she was very nice. She said that they will sell them when the store is ready to close sometime within the next 2 months. Apparently she worked at another store that closed and said that they sold for $125 each. There is a total of 8 of them. They are approx 24 wide, 18" deep and 24" high. I only have the space for 1 but I left my name and number and said I would check back periodically. Is that a good price or no? My only concern is how much weight they can hold. I'd like to store a variety of hardware and misc stuff in it. The items in them at the moment are small and light.

There are tons of threads about the Radio Shack parts drawers, when the chain went bankrupt in 2015, all the closed stores (hundreds or even thousands of stores) sold the parts drawers during the final days of the bankruptcy sale.

Tons of information out there on what they weight, what they hold, how much people bought them for, etc.

$125 is a good price. I've heard people getting down to as low as $100 bucks during 2015. But really, anything sub-$200 is a good deal. Parts drawers are expensive. Take a look at Grainger or Zoro Tools or something, Lots of $$$ for parts drawers.

I ended up paying $90 for mine that I got in 2015. They are nice for misc. parts that will fit, but they can't be used like a toolbox since the drawers have no bottom. The plastic tray rests on top and acts as the drawer. The slides are a decent size as well, just check them to make sure they all slide well.

They told me they weren't selling them until later when the store closed in May, but I don't think the kid knew what he was talking about. He seemed pissed he was going to be unemployed. The store was empty except for us and even the 20%-50% off wasn't a good deal.

Yeah, even at clearance prices there stuff was still overpriced. I did get some good deals on some speaker wire and D cell batteries.

Local Radio Shack closed last week and bought a bunch of 60/40 rosin core solder 75% off and alot of diodes , semi conductors,bulbs and fuses.They started out a few weeks ago at 25-50% off thenthe last week 75% off is when i bit.

I lucked out and found a RS store in Evansville on its final day of closeout. 90% off everything so I bought a TV antenna rotor for $6.00 and a bunch of chemicals at 10 cents on the dollar. I asked about the parts drawers, but someone beat me to them. We have one remaining RS store in Owensboro so I'll have to keep an eye on them.

When our stores closed I struck up conversation with the employees and they directed me to some really sweet deals that were not obvious or not advertised.

So, as someone who bought 8 of these cabinets and missed 16 more, $75 was the sweet spot (per cabinet) during the last closures.

I got cocky when I got 8 for $50...not just because the clerk charged me $50 for 8 instead instead of $50 each...I had standing offers at several stores @ $50 and lost them to folks at $75.

I will say that these are good but not great storage. The cabinets are flimsy & the drawers are open frames with a plastic insert. With that said, bolting flimsy to flimsy adds rigidity, and the storage is good for lighter weight smalls. I have a number of drawers dedicated to electrical parts, motorcycle carbs, etc., but would not use these to sort hardware or anything else dense and heavy.

I must be missing something, because $100+ sounds like too much for these units. Personally, I'd rather make a wood cabinet with adjustable drawers. Of course that takes time and wouldn't be much or any cheaper, but I think would be much more heavy duty and customized to my size/space requirements.

There is a RS closing near me, so fill me in on what I'm not getting about these storage units. They aren't actual Lista cabinets, are they?

Not lista, but they are very nice cabinets that can hold nuts and bolts easily. I bought one during the last bankruptcy. The drawers can hold some weight and still slide smoothly. I should have bought more (there were eight total), but didn't have the room.

when the one by me closed some one came in and offered 250. each and purchased all of them. Too rich for my blood. I may have to go check out and see if our other store is closing.

I bought a bunch of adapters, connectors and a few cables. The connectors/adapters were 90% off, cables were 50-70% off. They said the fixtures weren't going to be for sale.

The girl told me that some of the stuff that was 50% off was 70% off yesterday.

The one I was in Yesterday the guy mentioned the same thing, but said it was just the kits & tools that had done that.

Also for this round (2017) of closings all remaining unsold items are being taken to the nearest store that is staying open (at least around here).

The stores not selling fixtures may be the ones with Sprint stores in them that are staying open.

Let me see if I have this right:
The 8 cabinets @ $50 each were supposed to be $400 and the clerk screwed up and only charged you $50 for all 8? And then you brag about it on an internet forum?

Personally, the right thing to do would have been to point out their error and pay the full $400. You were already getting a good deal... It's called ethics and apparently, you don't have any

Ethically, I don't feel bad about a bottom feeding liquidator getting pennies on the dollar for the pennies on the dollar offer they made to capitalize on a corporate meltdown. If it had been a franchisee or a mom & pop I would have been more forthright because it would have hurt their bottom line.

I also don't talk people up on price at garage sales.

I bought 15 units during the last round of closures. Got most for $50 and paid $75 for 4 of them. I had the best luck by calling the stores repeatedly leading up to closing. Most places had them marked really high ($200+) until the week that they were closing. I'd offer less and see what the manager said.

Some stores agreed to sell the drawers well in advance of closing - I paid for them and waited until the day of closing to pick them up so they were empty. Others wouldn't make a deal until all the contents were sold - I just kept calling back and asking. It seemed like it was just up to the individual managers.

One thing to note: there are at least two different types of drawers. I got a bunch of gray ones and 4 white ones. The white ones are much heavier than the gray ones. They are sturdier, as well.
