Radio Shack small-part storage cabinets?

Greetings All

As you all probably know by now, Radio Shack is closing ~4000 stores nationwide, and they started the liquidation sales this weekend. I am sad to see them go, as I'm sure many here are, but the silver lining may be all the surplus store fixtures coming onto the market!

I haven't verified the manufacturer (or size), but every store I've ever been in has two big gray drawer units that hold all the small electrical bits. Do want. Anyone on this already? Please share your experience so these cabinets find good homes with the GJ family!

List of closing stores here: http://gizmodo.com/these-are-the-radioshack-stores-that-are-closing-1684433885

Cheers,

Jon

Yes I checked the the draws out, they are not Lista . They would be the Chinese knock off idea of Lista draws, 1/6th the strength of the real thing, nothing to get super excited about. Home Depot uses similar wannabe storage draws. The design/engineering is for units which will last for 10-15 years of light use, then with store remodeling, they would be changed out. Lista/Vidmar cabinets are meant to last lifetimes of heavy use.
That said, they would be useful in a garage for lighter parts storage. Price I might pay for the multi draw units $50-100.

Ah, thanks! Guess I should have figured as much... I'll edit the title of the post to be less misleading.

We're losing one of two. The mall location is closing, imagine the rent is way higher there than the mini mall by Walmart.

The two stores closet to me are closing. I guess I better get over there and see if they have any outdoor radio antennae.

EDIT: I can see what one of their problems with their web store is. Every time you look at an item and click back, it resets the entire field. You have to reclick "sort by", "items per page" and click back to the page you were on. Talk about an easy way to chase away prospective customers because of poor website IT.

I have the radio shack parts drawers from a store that closed locally. I've had them for years with smaller tools, electrical parts...etc. I don't recall what I paid but they've been great.

I just got 8 7 drawer units for $50 total....just under a dollar a drawer. I can tell you that they are not Lista, nor anywhere close. I can also tell you that for what I expect Radio Shack to be liquidating them for (free - $50/section) you cant go wrong. Expect better deals from the corporate stores than the franchises (if any franchises still exist).

There is one shutting down locally, the other location has been there since the early 1970's or even when the strip mall was built in the late 1960's, does not seem to be on the list.

The one local to me just closed it's doors last week. The drawers were still full of parts. I asked if they were willing to sell the drawers with everything in them and they told me they were just going to be moved to the next store they were closing. I'm sure eventually there won't be anywhere to go with them, but I don't know when/where that will be.

Nick don't pick at the bones of the dead.

That having been said buying used stuff can be iffy but these would be good for non-mechanical unless you spread stuff across the drawers. I probably have that much electrical to tell you the truth. My ZEUS I have a ton of ****.:willy_nil

If they're the ones I'm thinking 50 is what would be a "good" price but they won't go for under 100 bucks because idiots always bid up the store stuff (it's expensed accounting-wise for a business).

Interesting. I probably have at least 8 stores in a 20 mile area from me and according to the list, they're only closing 1 of them down. I'll have to stop by the one on the list and see if they are actually selling off things or if they're probably just going to send it all among the other stores in the area.

I've always thought there was about 1 radio Shack store for every Starbucks in my area. They needed to be thinned out a little around here.

I stopped in to pick up some resistors at my local store today. They told me the doors will be closed in a few weeks so I asked about the drawers and was informed they will likely just throw them out. I asked if I could buy them but he told me they were full of small pieces and didn't know. I think I will stop in tomorrow during the day and speak with the manager. Hopefully I can snag them for $50.00 or less. I would be interested in working a deal with him for the remaining contents too. One good thing was the kid gave me the resistors for free because he didn't want to break $20.00.

Wow, you were REALLY lucky. I stopped by a local store and they were almost completely out of inventory and pretty much down to only fixtures. I asked how much the parts drawer units were and they wanted $300 EACH! :lol_hitti:lol_hitti Not sure how on earth they thing they're going to get that much.

The reason they are completely out of inventory is because they took all the good stuff and sent it to a store that isn't closing. The only thing left in the "Store Closing" stores in my area is leftover garbage from the 1980's like VHS tapes, CB radio antenna, TV rabbit ear antennas, etc. Stuff they know they can't sell anyway, so they are dumping it in the store that is closing. All the good stuff got moved to the store that is staying opened, and it is priced at full retail.

That makes a lot of sense, it seemed crazy they would have liquidated things that quickly.

Moose, buy the other 4!!!! i went to 2 stores and talked to a district manager today and the going rate is $300 for a 7 drawer section... talking to another manager, they said that that price will likely change. i personally cant see ANYONE paying $300 for that! there is a company that is buying/liquidating all the store fixtures... i will keep waiting and checking, i dont think they have this thing all together yet.

$300 is the corporate answer, and they aren't really supposed to be selling them at all. If you can find the right manager who doesn't care, then you might find a deal. I'll be checking myself too.

Yes I bought them in the store. I was in Panera Bread for lunch, walked next door to radio shack. Labeled as $300 but all fixtures are 50% off right now.

I was in my Mercedes lol I am not loading up cabinets in that thing. I'll send my tech in the morning to grab them.

Obviously nobody in this thread has ever purchased storage equipment commercially. I have DORMAN setups for their TECH KITS in my shops, they were charging us almost $85 just for 1 steel drawer with liners. A 7 drawer assembly would be around $600 that way, and you have to purchase the product to fill them before you can buy the organizers. The radio shack ones feel nicer then some of the organizers I have paid a lot more then $300 for.

I don't know what I will put in these since I already have adequate storage. If the rest are available Sunday I might be the rest of them if they will do $100 a piece if I buy them all, they had 12 total.

I stopped by the local store closing today. Nothing left but junk and the cabinets, price was quoted as $150 for a 7 drawer rack (50% off of $300) I looked at them, light steel box with steel frames that hold plastic parts trays. very light, no steel bottom on drawer frames , I wouldn't give more than $25 for the 7 draws unit

Stopped in my local RS today, they had a big sign on them $300 per section. I talked to the manager she was confident that nobody was going to pay that price. I told her I would take 2 @ $75 or 4 @$50. She asked for my number, said when it gets close to the end she will call me. I did end up buying a bread board and a new soldering iron. Keith

"they wanted $300 EACH"
Talk about needing to be realistic, what kind of drugs are they taking at that store?

"how's the quality of these compared to the regular Lista cabinet? "
Guessing the radio shack units weight 100 lbs, Vidmar/Lista weigh 400 lbs for the same size/number of dividers. Place approx 50 lbs in a RS draw, that about the limit, 400 lbs in a Lista or Vidmar draw is the limit. For light stuff, there is nothing wrong with the RS cabinets, half the stuff in a garage is light weight.
