I've always thought those anvil vises were interesting looking.
I'd hate to see what'd happen to one if it got used as a proper anvil though...
Mostly be a good bench decoration

Well Drive, looks like your vise could have been poured on Monday after all.---I still prefer the Friday beer run theory.---It just sounds better.

Good research Pgh.---That's going in the saved file.

Drives,
Your NuTyp was made after 1930.

This one has the "Cylinder Jaws" for which Fulton was granted Patent #1890114 on 6 Dec 1932. He filed for the patent 29 Aug 1930, so figure he could have developed this shortly before then. Fulton seemed to understand the patent system very well, so I doubt there was much, if any, lag time from concept to patent application.

I have attached your image with jaws in question circled in Arrest Me Red.

From Fulton's patent: (Complete with errors due to Google's OCR.)
Up until a short time ago, vises merely consisted of jaws of work holding means, adapted to be closed together, and to hold an object between them. As the faces of the jaws were usually arranged parallel, it was quite obvious that round bodies, such as pipes, cylinders or disks could not be held between such jaws.

The next improvement was the addition of pipe jaws, as an auxiliary to the fiat, or machinist jaws, and while such pipe jaws serve to hold pipes or cylinders in one position, still there was something lacking to make a vise complete and efficient.

In this invention, I have provided an additional pair of jaws or work holding means designed for the purpose of holding disks or cylinders, and therefore the vise which I have shown, and which I will describe, has three distinct pairs of jaws, all operated from a single source, and so proportioned that the effect of closing of any pair of jaws will not be in any way hampered by the premature closing of any other pair of jaws.

Are there any markings on the other side of the vise? Turning it around may be incredibly revealing...

1932 would have been the INT period, after 1935? or so, it could have been Sawyer or something between INT and Sawyer, or ????.

JKB: thanks again for the great information and the pictures.:beer:

ALL: i'm on the search for the missing parts and see what happens and i'm not in a hurry cause i still need to clean off or maybe make a bench to put this one on.

hope you are all planning a great weekend and maybe a few will be fortunate to find a good old vise too.

cheers

Found an old vise at a friend's dad's home.6" with a ten or 12 inch rotating base. It has an adjustable gib with 3 adjusting screws. The trademark looks like a backwards F next to a P, both sitting in an upward facing C. I'd post a pic, but I just got a new phone and don't know how to on tapatalk. I would imagine it's worth more than scrap pricing. Anyone know. I'll be home on Sunday from Nebraska and can post a pic from my laptop. TIA

FPU Bison. Very good, high quality vise. But it takes a little getting used to the "backwards" action.

Anyone have an idea on what a 6" fixed base Columbian would be worth? At a buddy's shop, he sandblasted the whole thing, no cracks or anything. Before he got to repainting it someone else rattle canned the whole thing (slide, handle, everything) black.... It'd be easy enough to get that back off though.
He's not at all attached to it, any idea what I should offer?

Before and after of the 450SJ some folks thought wouldn't turn out to be a nice vise. It just needed some love along with jaws and swivel locks from KMScott. To be fair, it had some wear, and the jaw supports aren't perfectly square, but that doesn't bother me a bit. The paint was color-matched to a 1968 model 9450 that had original paint and stickers. It's close, but has a touch less green and quite a bit more sheen compared to the flat factory paint. I decided not to replace the handle after touching it with a belt sander and then a deburring wheel....it's pretty decent.

Before:

Pile O' Parts:

Stripped bare:

After:

Old style swivel base without the notches in the outer ring...smooth shelf on smooth tabs for friction.

Incredible refurb! Great job bringing that one back from the brink. What's your method for removing the grinder wheel marks on the jaws?

New jaws from KMScott

If they aren't worn too badly, running them over a belt sander will clean them up pretty well...just finish up with something like 320 grit and they'll look decent.

I'll often use the belt grinder to remove marks from the jaws, then a 400 grit grease less wheel on the buffer, followed by a wheel with green compound. Not as nice as my usual mirror finish, but a lot quicker and easier, and works better on things that aren't perfectly flat or fit to a contact wheel

If they're really mangled though it's buying or making a new set

I've been using scotchbright belts lately for polishing hammers (one of my other collecting problems) and they save a ton of time and effort. I'll try them on the next vise I do.

The third one is a UNIQUE MANTLE & CO. MACHINIST VISE.---Sold for $1404.99, with $50.00 shipping in my direction.---Only one of those I've ever seen.

Thanks for posting the auction link. That vise sold for more than I would expect. But it is really cool and unusual. There at least two of them in existence. Here is another one on PracticalMachinist.com. I have tried finding the patent for the vise but no luck so far.

Speaking of the mantle vises, a guy in a Facebook machinist group I'm in had one in a picture of his shop. Said it's the second one he's owned. There's definitely a few out there, just clearly not many.... I'd love one for a lot of the work I do

Nice one, VISEs!! Two questions: opening distance and total weight? That thing is AMAZING! Is there some specialized purpose it was made for?

Congrats VISEs! THAT is an Ultimate Score!

So we need details! Whats it weigh, jaw width and capacity?

Full disclosure...I've paid for it but it will be a while before I can wrap my hands around it as it will be shipped from Germany.

I'm told it is 700 pounds with 10" jaws. So we shall see.
