Thanks macgee. With the longer spindles, it makes sense that it is a polisher. This forum is an incredible source for information.

Thanks again.

I think it's cool as **** that you have your grand dad's and dad's tools back in operation! Every time I pick up one of my dad's tools I think of him and what he taught me. I miss him.

Kudos for you!

Picked up this Baldor 7", 1/2 hp, 7306D grinder on CL for $75. The wheels turn real slow - hoping that it just needs some new bearings. It's missing the water cup and tool tray, but the lighted eye shields are complete and working. It's all cast iron....weighs about 75 pounds.

The right side has some kind of tool grinding attachment marked BG121 - maybe for blade grinding?

Not that I really needed another project grinder....

.

If the wheels spin freely, the bearings are fine. You might need a new run capacitor (it's under the base). Also make sure it is wired for 120v. Great grinder, I use mine everyday.

Thanks for the info. I haven't even started to look into it, and I am not familiar with Baldor grinders (it's my first). Trying to decide if I want to order the hardware & cup/tray or not...figured I would determine what is wrong before I buy anything for it.

Rarely is it bearings when they run slow. Look to starting caps or windings.

Will it wind up if "kick started" by spinning the wheels (carefully...)

It has no problem starting, just doesn't spin quickly. With the power off, giving the wheels a good spin only turns the wheels about 1/2 a turn before it stops. I don't hear anything rubbing, but it seems to be a whole lot of resistance someplace.

My Blue-Point! I have searched for this thing and found grinders close but any info anyone could offer is greatly appreciated. Would like to know model, year, or how to find out what parts are missing etc.

That grinder was made by Kingston-Conley in the 40's, who made them for many companies. Yours is a fairly common model, and should have looked much like this when original built.

Might want to swap sides with the wire wheel and stone, the stone needs a guard, wire wheels often work better without them.

Well it's laying in pieces now. Trying to find bearings for it and the rest of the parts

I was driving home tonight and saw a guy cleaning out an old wood shed and something caught my eye. I stopped and he was trying to get rid of some stuff and get stuff out for a yard sale next week.

I am new to grinders and found a decent deal on what turned out to be a Craftsman block grinder, 1/2 HP in good shape a few weeks ago and had been looking for a stand......

Today I found this. Looks like a really early Stanley grinder 1/3 HP with lighted eye guards both present (one working, the other missing a bulb) on a Stanley pedistal stand. He plugged it in and it was smooth and quiet. I decided to buy it.

Little rusty and I intend to work on this one. Missing both tool rests and I am guessing these will be hard to find replacements for.

What do you think

Classic good looks there even though you're missing some important parts. I am baffled at the motor plate that lists it drawing a mere 50 watts. That equates to 1/15th horsepower. Can't be right, can it?

Let us all remember to stop and talk to old guys (or not so old guys) cleaning out garages, sheds, and barns!

Maybe that plate is for the lamps in the eye-shields?

And include basements....

That is correct, that tag is attached to the eye shield.

I think you are absolutely right about "hard to find replacements". You will need to fabricate your own or find a donor grinder for parts.

I have one of those toastmasters. I need to take the bottom cover off and see if it just needs a new switch, or if it has died for good... If I can get it going I want to set if up for very light wire wheeling jobs...

Hard to belive anyone used one enough to completely wear out the wheels!

Just picked up this old 1/2 hp cast iron round top grinder with cast iron riser/water tray/tool rest for $20. Everything works including the lamp and puuuurrrs quietly. Actually its the best sounding block grinder (9) I've ever had. I think I even may have the actual brown cast iron wheel guards & eye shields for a 1/3hp laying around somewhere that I think will fit this one but if I keep it I will put 8" 3m bristle brush wheels on it so won't need them or the tool rests.

Was scared to death to turn it on, I stood back and plugged in the power cord expecting the stone wheel to carpet bomb the whole driveway.

I haven't seen this cast iron version before in the 1/2hp and mega heavy 1-1/2" riser base.

That's a great find!

I have a 1/3-HP version without that HD base, and it's one beefy guy. That one must take a man and a strong boy to pick it up!

Over on the 'Block' thread, those are pre-Blocks because their model prefix starts with 115. They would love to see it there, and I think there's a pre-Block thread also.

Nice find.

That grinder looks great for its age. From what I can find, it is a very unique design especially the centrifugal switch assembly. It employs a pair of cylindrical copper rings and a spinning brush w/counterweight for their contacts. I understand how it works, but I have no idea how you could repair it if it ever wore out or broke...

You are referring to the Mall grinder, I take it. I have never worked on this, because it always works so well. I'm tempted to take it apart and clean, lube and buff everything. Info on it is hard to come by I did find a 1949 Patent showing the breakdown of the parts on Google.
On the Van Dorn, I just rebuilt the switch it was sticky. There's actually a cooler Van Dorn that has the name embossed in it.

I don't what the Mall grinder is. I was referring to the 6" bench grinder with the retrofitted push button switch.

The mall grinder/sander is in my previous picture that has a flexible shaft.
Hmm, I didn't consider that the Van Dorn had a retrofitted switch when I was working on it. I think you are right, because when I went to put the face plate screws back in one screw was too big and only fit in one hole. Obviously, someone had tapped the holes to the screws they had. It makes sense. Thanks. I think this switch is cooler looking though.

It has been a while since I posted, but I just picked up this sweet Powr-Kraft bench grinder of CL for $35. Didn't even haggle. It is in great condition and each face shield has a small light built in behind that turn on along with the grinder!

exmaxima1 - Thanks. I built a small 16'x20' backyard shop last summer, and, given that I am a woodworker, I had to have a proper woodworking bench. Thankfully, I saved the massive crate that my CNC machine was shipped on, and was able to build the bench completely out of that.

I don't have any good pictures of the workbench. I will have to take some and post them in the workbench thread. But here is a picture of the CNC machine on the crate.

And in the shop.

I'm guessing that Austrian machine was shipped with some hefty Austrian hardwood skids---nice job!
