No it's not. Not even close. I own both . Besides the quality difference between them. The Snap On is USA made me the OTC is Taiwan. The OTC are thinner metal and less "substantial" feeling. Plus the grips on the snap on are far superior as well.

If you're going to spend that sort of money, you really owe it to yourself to get a decent ratcheting unit. The results are a lot stronger and more consistent.

The crimp nests in the ratcheting die units have separate areas for crimping the conductors and the insulation strain relief, so in addition to getting a better crimp it also takes less time.

This is actually a re-branded OTC crimper/stripper. And you can get it for less than half the price from OTC too....

In point of fact the SO PWCS7CF is not a rebranded OTC 59505. While they are similar, they are not the same tool. Two major differences are that the PWCS7CF has a much more aggressive crimper as well as cutters forward of the pivot. Having owned both I like the PWCS7CF much better. If you know of an OTC part number that is closer, could you send it my way please. Thanks.

The PWCS7CF is my favorite go to crimpers, as other have stated it's far better then the OTC. I do own the OTC that has a 90 degree angle and it's great for tight spots.

Thanks, Guys!
I didn't get to do a "side by side", but I was worried that Snap-On had rebranded them....and was very disappointed.

The BEST information you will ever want on crimpers, yes they are mandatory for marine wiring and connectors, but my good friend - Maine Sail tells you why and discusses the tools to get the best work done.

Dude, THANK YOU. You have potentially saved me countless hours. I have built a few wire harnesses for race cars (older Porsches for road racing), and have been soldering the ring terminals on each one given the extreme environment. I have to admit I had no clue there was so much to know about crimping. From the above, it appears I don't need to solder them like i had been. And I'm guessing the stuff I've done to my boat may be wrong, too (barrel style connectors w/ weatherpack connections), but they aren't that critical, and a step above what Malibu did from the factory.

That said, I've been eyeing the Astro set with interchangeable dies (http://www.astrotools.com/index.php...nterchangeable-ratchet-crimping-tool-set.html). Can anyone verify that the dies for the insulated connectors are the double crimp style? I'd buy from the author of the linked page, but he has stated he is dropping the tool from his store as the supplier has not been able to come up with any additional dies, and I'd rather have a tool that will accept multiple sets of dies.

I used an Amp crimper and its best feature was the gauge that was used to spec the crimp. Sorry to hear Amp is gone.

I use the Ancor crimper that Maine sail pic shows on the far right. I use it with Ancor barrels and eyes. It works well. But its good to have the T&B for other stuff, especially limited access. The SO looks interesting. If it works as well as my 196s......I would be interested.

Love the snap on pwsc7sf or whatever they are, also picked up the bigger snap ons that are similar to the Thomas & betts, and gb ones I've used for years. Have some cheaply ratcheting ones I find myself using more and more, once something happens with them I think I'll invest in some decent ratcheters. Those little snappy are my go to for a quick couple wire fix kinda thing. The other stuff comes out for making or fixing harnesses.

The Astro set just came a little earlier. Very nice set, I'm quite happy with it! Never thought of crimpers as being something that was as complicated as these are. And to answer my own question, yes, all of the dies to double crimping (sheesh, I wish I would have known about that feature years ago, too!).
