New Armstrong ratchet in-op

Just bought an armstrong 1/2 ratchet from a local store. When I saw it I noticed how similar it was to the matco's I've been seeing on the truck, upon talking to the store owner was informed they made matco's but the price was significantly less. $65 new from them or about $200 off the truck. Thought score and bought it. Well I get it to work toss a socket on it to bust the drain plug loose on an isx and it free spins. So I pull the head apart to find the issue but I think its got the wrong parts as the gear teeth and the pawl don't match, will be going back to the store monday but didn't know if anyone else could confirm.

Yep! The gear teeth and pawl don't match. A common occurrence with GearWrench ratchets.

You mean to tell me you've been a member here for a year now and just discovered Armstrong and Matco ratchets are the same?? Return that ratchet and get your money back. I read just as many stories about problems with the Maxx 88's as I do Craftsman 36t ratchets. BTW, have you seen this? It looks like you have a 60 tooth pawl matched its an 88 tooth anvil.

You know that that Apex, the parent company of MATCO, Gearwrench and and Armstrong has disconued the Armstrong brand, right? I know a lot less about these products than many here but I believe that the Gearwrench parts fit MATCO and Armstrong on at least some of the ratchets. But in your case I would take it right back. I hear Apex is none too quick rectifying problems. That is a real screw up

You didn't spin test it in the store? That's an advantage of b&m stores, you can handle the tool before buying.

Within the past month they replaced my 3/8" ratchet under warranty within 3 business days and sent me two rebuild kits (3/8" ratchet and 1/4" ratchet) for free within 5 business days.

Both dealing with separate CS reps. If that isn't quick I don't know what is...

there should be numbers stamped on one side of the pawl gear, what do you have?

Now count your teeth on the drive gear. you also have three choices for drive gears 60, 84, & 88.

Although technically, Armstrong didn't offer an 84 tooth ratchet, it's possible that parts got mixed up.

It spins clicks good by hand, it isn't until you put a socket on it and some force it free spins.

Hey, when you go back to Epsteins, ask them when the new SK 90 tooth ratchet is going to hit the market. I know it's only Easter but, the 4th of July is right around the corner.....

Just the ratchets until recently. Now, AJ Manufacturing makes them. Only flex heads at this time, I believe.

Went to Epsteins today and they replaced the ratchet with no issues, awesome customer service.
