Plvmb or Plomb. Plumb made hammers...

Lots of fine finds today guys! I'm mostly living on your scores these days!

I forgot one thing I picked up last Thursday evening. I picked up a 50's solid maple drop leaf coffee table. The main reason I got it was its top is a full 1": thick, and maple is a good hardwood.

The plan is to cut it down to about 36" wide; make 36" tall trestle stand/legs for it, possibly with drawers on the ends, and use it for my inside the house work bench. I want something I can work at standing if I want and I have a padded bar stool for when I want to sit at it.

I can fold the leafs down most of the time and its only 19"deep. The outside edge of the top with the leaf up will be curved, but that is OK.

No pics as I have not unloaded it yet.

This is a culmination of 3 weeks of garage, yard, and estate sales that I've gone to and just got around to posting it. Ill break this up into each week.

WEEK 1 - This was the week that there is a monthly antique fair, estate and yard sales were a complete bust but the fair, she provides for the empire of dirt!
Stanley No 81 cabinet scraper plane - $4
Miniature Goodall Pratt Hand drill with the bits as well, beautiful shape - $6
Littlestown bench vise - $12 - I already restored it by this point and gave it as a gift to a friend just starting up a little shop for his hobbies so $12 well spent!
Bonney Pitman arm puller - $2
Chisel handle - Free from the guy I bought the scraper plane and hand drill from, good for making copies on my lathe. He said he had a box of 1000 from a hardware store that closed down in the early 2000's and hes been selling them since.

WEEK 2 - Decent week I say so myself, went to an estate sale right next to the mountains outside of the city so none of the tool vultures were there because it was so far, hit some good 50% off deals.

Black and decker router with USA craftsman bits, mint condition, all metal - $12
Replica Zyliss vise, hacksaws, USA chisels, etc - $10
Two Shelton tool kits, never been used - $20 for both

Pay no attention to my secret stash of Fibre Ones!

This week, WEEK 3. Nice deals all around on my end! Quite happy with this week! Sun was baking today so not as many people out at the estate sales but that just means more for me. There was also an estate sale that not many people know about that I got some of the best tools out of. There was also my favorite guy that manages his own private estate sales that always has the best prices.

Stanley Bailey No7 Jointer Plane - $20
Millers Falls No 682 Nearly MINT, stick a trim router in it and make more intricate cuts - $20
Infamous Dremel tool that AvE reviewed - $8
3 Disston Phila and Philadelphia hand saws - $10 for the 3
1/2" hand drill - $8
Husky USA 1/4" tool set WITH A Plumb 5/16" drive WF-8 Ratchet - $4
Adze/scooper, I forget the name if anyone knows it please let me know!, Collins & Co - $4 still has the sticker on it still
Craftsman Circle Y adjustable wrench - $2.50
This cool blue metal hammered box - $10
Craftsman Polisher with Lamb whool pads - $15
Assorted wooden screwdrivers - $8, A little pricier but I actually needed some more phillips head ones
Plumb baby hammer - $2
Craftsman 10" RAS - Its one of the recall ones, gonna cash in the recall and part out the rest, plugged it in and it sounded like the bearings were shot after sitting for so long not being used out in a open barn (was covered in cob webs), plus it would need a big cleaning and restoring so its not really worth it, im also going to part out the rest of it - $25 though so this will make up for spending money on other stuff
Cast Iron griddle - $10
NOT SHOWN - A cool little old reductor that I picked up, no idea what ill use it for but it was need, was only a $1

Hopefully the streak keeps on going, I actually like being able to find things at estate sales, makes the hunt more fun and I love finding cool things!

I have a box just like your blue one. Acorn brand I think it is? Except mine is gray, and instead of the drawers on the bottom it has a little cabinet. Can't really figure out what these are used for though, they are a little odd with the top that flips open but also the bottom halves...

Not sure of the dimensions, but the flip top looks like it could hold hanging files. Maybe the drawers hold reams of standard letter paper? Or are they tall enough for 3x5 cards?

I've been on the road for the past week, attending meetings in Dayton, OH all week. I posted some of my finds elsewhere, so this post will cover our adventures since last Friday.

I say "our" because SWMBO flew out to join me for the drive back east. Why, you ask? Well, last fall, when she was out here visiting friends, she found a lady who made custom concrete water features. SWMBO's been searching for one for a space in front of our front porch, and this was it.

Here's an example of what she wanted:

For size reference, those are 1-ft square tiles on the floor. How much? Don't ask. Also, very heavy and fragile, so no shipping. Fortunately, she was able to negotiate an upgrade at the rental car counter to a Dodge Grand Caravan for about a third the cost of a straight reservation.

While SWMBO was wheeling the Big Blue Caravan from Columbus to Dayton, I found an estate sale near our meet up place. It was the last day of the sale, and deserted of customers when I got there at 1:45 pm. The attendant said most of the hand tools went the first day. Here's what I picked from the detrus for a buck:

3-ft x 3/8" stainless steel rod
Semi-vintage candy thermometer, made in nearby Springfield, OH
Unused 3-prong male plug end

After SWMBO and I met up, we transferred my week's acquisitions to the van, turned in my expense voucher rental car and drove off to New Madison, Ohio to pick up a hundred pounds of concrete.

SWMBO was downright giddy, and during the drive to our overnight stop in Erie, PA, easy persuaded to add some garage sale stops the next day. Buffalo, NY proved to be up to the challenge.

Stop #1 was a moving sale, a common post-winter activity up north. The guy was selling off the things he didn't want to haul to Florida: bulky car parts, old surplus tools, and the usual junk a car guy accumulates over time. Unfortunately, after picking my way down his workbench from back to front, accumulating a small pile of nice tools to bargain over, I came to the small paper plate sign at the front of the workbench that said "Tools on workbench not for sale" D'oh! I quickly put them all back.

After chatting him up a bit on cars and Florida (I have experience with both), we settled on $30 for the Craftsman Crown top 7-drwr machinist box with a bunch of US-made DOE and combo wrenches, plus a Ryobi grinder with a broken switch for another $5.

Stop #2 was the 2nd day of a 2-day sale. Signs posted around the place said 50% off, but most items with marked prices were way high. I picked through the leftovers and found two DBEs, a Lufkin 12' tape measure and a Gem oil can. I offered the basement tool guy a dollar for them, and he said "Oh, no way!" He gave me a price of $4, which was probably still a good price, but I put the oil can back and knocked the price down to $2.

Stop #3 was the most promising, but was a total bust. It was the 3rd day of a 3-day moving sale, advertised as tools and auto parts. The place had a lift in the two-car garage and some good big tools....none of which were for sale. The only leftovers were junk or otherwise undesirable. I left with nothing.

Overall, a good travel trip with my favorite girl, bringing home things that made us both happy! We realized on the drive back that we've known each other for half of my life, and have been married almost as long. And we still want to know each other, and be married to each other. Life is good. CD, Nice finds!

There is a recall on that era of RA saw from Craftsman. if you google it there will be a site where you put in the model & S/N, and it will offer one of two resolutions for the saw, depending on model & S/N:
  1. Send in the motor and slide assy, (they wil send you a prepaid box) or
  2. they will provide a "repair kit" with new table and some guard parts.

Hit up a couple sales yesterday. Most were a bust or way overpriced. I did get the following score though. I was looking at the jigsaw when the owner came over and started talking to me. He's like I'll put all this in that bucket and sell it for 25 bucks. Of course I had to offer 20 and he accepted.

Rigid 18 volt drill
Rigid jigsaw
Rigid charger
3 batteries with one being the 4 ah

I need another drill like I need another hole in my head but I thought it was too good to turn down. All the batteries work and seem to hold a charge. The stuff appears a little dirty and well used but it should have some life left. Beats paying Home Depot prices.

This 8" hacksaw has got me puzzled. There are two just like it on eBay,
https://www.ebay.com/itm/371509701814
https://www.ebay.com/itm/381918282737
a 9" version (with two others) https://www.ebay.com/itm/192130979859
and another 9" version on http://thumb1.zeppy.io/d/l400/pict/152434596166/vintage-hacksaw-frame-with-wooden-handle though I am unfamiliar with how to navigate that site.
The three 5-sided stars seem fairly distinctive, but no one seems to have a clue who manufacted it. I thought of checking the Peck Stow Wilcox catalog that was once available online, but the links on several sites (including ToolArchives) fizzle out.
Any other ideas about tracking down a three star trademark?

Here are a few pics of the toolbox. It kinda looks like a Gerstner, but it has an outer metal skin, vice a wood finish. Dan said it was old when he got it.

Its about a foot deep, with a metal separator between the two halves that is about 8 inches tall. It does look like it holds reams of paper or something akin to that. Its a super cool piece, I was surprised when I saw it because it was 11am and usually anything thats good at that particular estate sale company is gone by 9-10.

CD, Nice finds!

Yep, already had the box ordered and I'm parting out the rest. I'm usually never the type of person to "destroy" old machinery and tools and I feel a bit guilty that its destined for scrap. But at the same time these more common RAS are not worth much here and this one isnt in particularly good shape. The estate sale I got it from was in its second weekend and this sat with no takers covered in cob webs and must have been baking in the sun for a long time on one side. They were planning to send everything in the barn to the dump anyways so In the end it will be worth more in parts and the recall than it is on CL or anything, and I specifically have no use for it that I cant do with my sliding mitre saw or table saw.

Corndoggeh, that Plomb ratchet is more likely 9/32" drive, and you can find sockets for them with a little luck.

Thanks! I'll actually measure the drive end to make sure, I think I have a few of the matching sockets so maybe ill be able to put a set together or maybe ill pass it on to someone else for them to collect. :dunno:

Use, then flip. I've wanted one to do the driveway repairs and this one will work well. I'll use it this summer and then flip it.

It was most definitely flooded Jeremy. The whole neighborhood was submerged back in august, FEMA trailer in the front yard. Either he got it free or cheap and fixed it to flip. His garage was set up as a riding lawnmower repair shop.

Where are you guys getting your Stephens lever vise price estimates from? I see one completed listing on Ebay that sold for $390 but it was for the full size model with a swivel base. All the other images/references I see online also refer to their full size lever vises, not the small one fl18guy picked up.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/antique-cir...-Patent-Lever-Action-Quick-Vise-/152435317836

Have you seen the premium prices small vises are going for these days on Eprey? That is it a lever action Stephens adds to it's rarity, and as you noted, this style goes pretty high.

I don't think they are for off it it were to be put up for auction there

Something is up with some of the recent Eprey links. that one you just posted redirected me to some sales page apparently not related to Eprey...

OK using the number I got there.

BIN only is not a good indicator of what something may go for under auction. Its commonly misused by people trying to get silly $$ for an item or with a preposterous amount for an item while the auction runs... which can scare people off. or its below value and is grabbed immediately.

Its best used to set a "you want it guaranteed? the BIN for this is reasonable/acceptable profit for me" and the price should be a fair price for the item, not some silly number..

I don't think so, but I'll scan it tonight to be sure. It only has happened here.

Edit: Hmm I just tried it from the Email notice and it worked fine...

2nd Edit: tried again from GJ and its the re-direct...

Thanks! I have a pdf of the 1925 catalog. They had dropped the stars by then, but otherwise looks the same. Four sizes - 8, 9, 10, 12"

Outlaw - it's VIGlink. Scroll to "why am I seeing this?" Click it. Scroll to "opt out" click it. Scroll to "disable" click it. Probably by tomorrow they'll make you jump through a fourth hoop. It's got to be a GJ deal. "Revenue creating links" means GJ is paying for our use of the site by allowing advertisers to hijack our links. If their product actually worked, we would be redirected to things we would be interested in buying. But evidently, the guys who wrote the algorithm are just greedy morons.

Sometimes free stuff is easy, sometimes it's not.

Large bird cage, put out for the trash across the street from me yesterday. Rolled it over to my place on it's casters!

Today I went out for a little evening walk and found this old school desk and a pair of saw horses put out for trash. Of course it was almost to my turnaround point, 3/4 mile one way. I carried them over a half mile! My arms are burning a bit as I type this LOL. Got an upper body workout doing a walk!
