I spotted two Milwaukee 46" tops in the overhead at a store on Friday and was unable to locate the bottoms anywhere in the store. It was packed at the time so I decided to come back later when I knew it'd be empty.
I went back yesterday evening about 6:30 with the sole purpose of having someone check the price of both boxes with their phone and had the most bizarre experience I've ever had with an HD employee since I started doing this last February.
The store was pretty much empty and I found the hardware guy dicking around on his personal phone. I asked if they had the bottoms for the two Milwaukee boxes in the overhead a few aisles over. We walk over there and he tells me its just the tops. I ask if he could check the price on them and he starts checking HD.com on his personal phone. Not wanting to correct him, I let him do his thing. After quoting me $299, I ask for the in-store price and he says its $299. I asked if he'd mind scanning one with his store phone to verify this. He takes out his store phone and tries to search for it instead but is unable to connect to the network due to a temporary power outage. He once again assured me that the in-store price is $299.
I told him that I knew the top chest was on clearance and that clearance prices never match the online prices. He then responded that that maybe the case, but the top chest isn't on clearance at this store. Fed up at this point, I showed him a screenshot of the PCA with the $50 price and said this is how much they are at every store, put my phone away, and then asked him to go up there and get the UPC code on the two boxes for me. It took several more minutes for him to run out of bs excuses before he walked off to get the lift.
He came back liftless about 30 seconds later but had a store phone in his hand. Apparently he discovered that the system had come back online and was there to show me that those couldn't be the $50 chests because their inventory showed they had 0 in stock. I said okay, show me the cost of those two boxes on your phone. A few minutes later he went back to retrieve the lift.
The guy gets up there and starts looking for the UPC, but he cant find it because it on the opposite side. Not wanting to go to the effort of shifting the box so that he could see the UPC, he looks at the side, types something in his phone and says "I just searched our inventory using the style number and it's coming up as $299 in-store". I asked him for the "style number" and instead of giving me the SKU or Model number, he decides to take it over the top and make up some completely random 7 digit number off the top of his head. This deep in the game, I'm completely stunned that he thinks he can shake me off so easily.
I was about to ask for the store manager, but decided that I'd screw with him for a bit before I did.
I could tell that he was extremely pissed off and wanted nothing more than for me to go away, so I decided to stick around for a bit longer.
I waited for him to get down, shook his hand and thanked him and his flagger for their help. As he drove off on the fork lift you could see on his face how relieved he was to be done with me. I watched what aisle he went down and headed over there as soon as I heard it shutoff.
I moseyed up to him a few seconds later and said, "I really hate to bother you... but would you mind looking up the in-store price using the style number for me real quick?" He typed some stuff on his phone and then showed me the listing for the box on HD.com...
Not really sure if this guy is now screwing with me, I paused a bit before asking "Why are you showing me the online price when I asked for the in-store price?" At this point, I notice his hands are shaking and it honestly looks like hes considering whether or not to lay me out. After a few seconds he says, "$299 is the store price". I asked for the store manager.
It took about 15 minutes for the SM to show up. I explain whats going on and he has the same guy go up there and scan both boxes. Apparently, the guy wasn't trying to be shady, he just didn't feel like going up there to check them for me. They both turned out to have the newer UPC, lol.
I was back in my truck at 7:50.
Milwaukee string trimmer is now $299 w/free bare tool hedge trimmer, blower, or 5.0 battery, take your pick.
I'd really like one of these, but the price has got me on the sidelines. Calling on the collective wisdom of the thread here - is there any way to get 10% off that price? I don't know much about the 11% rebate, but I don't think they offer that in Colorado. Maybe take out a HD credit card?

I have the card and they occasionally send me a 10% off coupon. A quicker option would be eBay. There are a few for sale there that are legit. Here's one but it is stupid expensive. http://www.ebay.com/itm/332204513996
Im pretty sure they can manually enter 10% off but have a feeling everyone has been told never to override the computer. So 10% off clearance and/or promotions might be a no go from now on.
i would have laid you out. there is a difference between trying to make a buck or grab a deal or whatever and completely ruining someones night. maybe the number he read was real maybe not, but i'm guessing with you wanting to "**** with him a little more" he was trying to get you to go and i don't blame him. you could have come back the next morning or something but you chose to hassle everyone and ended up being wrong in the end. like the other guy said. just say you want it, if it scans wrong, say "oops".
It's nationwide. Store email went out to every store 3 weeks ago. Not saying every store will do it, but majority will.

Instead of getting it back in credit, just have it put back on your credit card, or refunded in cash.I can tell you if they are too stringent on this I'll take my business elsewhere. I often buy multiples "just in case" then return what I don't need. About half the time the return is done by my wife. If they stop me from using a credit for something she returned or vice versa I'll simple start going to the Lowes that's a little further away. I am lucky I live almost in between two HDs and a Lowes is about a mile further than going to one of the HDs.

Problem is I use gift cards a lot and they will only give you store credit when returning on something bought with a gift card.

I could be wrong here, but I think there is a difference between a "gift card" and a "store credit". If you purchase with gift cards (not store credits), then the refund will also go to a gift card. Can anyone else confirm that this is correct?
I wonder if they have changed their policy about people being banned from returns with this new policy? I've known two people who were banned from making returns. In each case it was a small amount and it was items purchased with in store credit. Both actually had the receipts from their original purchase but got no where with HD when trying to clear the ban.

Im not sure if the info about store credit tied to ID was listed here, but I did read about it somewhere on the internets. My solution is to just use my HD credit card. 1 year return policy, printed and email (optional) receipt, etc. Commercial card has gas rewards on top of that. Walk in with something to return without any receipt, just tell them to scan the card and you're good to go.
Works with non-Home Depot cards too, but the return policy is 90 days instead of 1 year.
It's because returns on store credit are weighed highly in the red flag system. Consider the only way you get store credit is a no receipt return (supposedly), it's a return of a return.I bet they had already done no-receipt returns at one of TRE's other retail chains (Best Buy is probably the biggest), as that will count against you as well. I get why they have it (I worked retail long enough & @ BB), but they also could make it better in plenty of ways. The HD mgr told me they had a contractor that did work for HD (like if you bought install from HD) & he was 'banned' b/c of small stuff do to their installs. They took care of him of course, but essentially their own system caused their own problem & had no real solution.

After MONTHS at $57.06 my store finally dropped these to $19.03

Unless I am mistaken, are you not the guy who is a manager at HD who was on here a while back railing about how bad you hate clearance deals? And how bad you hated people looking for penny deals? If I am correct you also bragged about feeding all the info you got here back to the powers that be at HD. You know what the deals are. Why worry about the little stuff we find?Enough talk about returns and store credit... This is a deals forum, BACK TO THE DEALS!!!
