Screwdriver Question...

Hey everyone, I'm new here. Been lurking for awhile and decided to join.

Anyway, my question is related to screwdrivers. I'm curious why most quality manufacturers appear to have replaced the old square hard handle designs in favor of Tri-Lobe (I believe that's what it's called)?

From an ergonomics standpoint, the tri-lobe handles don't feel very good in the hand, IMO. I'm big into NAPA Carlyle tools right now and their screwdrivers just don't seem that great. They have a square hard handle 1/4" spin driver that would make for a perfect set of screwdrivers. I'd love to see this! Or at least see a manufacturer come out with a nice set that has hex bolsters. Being on somewhat of a budget, I can't justify more than $100 for an old set of MAC or Snap On hard handles. Williams might be just what I need...

So are you asking about Snap On and Mac basically?

Get the Williams. It's Snap On with Williams on the handle instead.

My favorite screwdrivers for both comfort and aesthetics have always been the Snap-on hard handles.

The new Instinct handles however were developed to better fit the natural shape of the inside of a closed hand. I was shown once if you make a loosely closed fist and look at the shape created its triangular not square.

That makes sense. I have a set of the Carlyle's but also find myself reaching for something else. I tried the new Snap-On soft handles awhile back and wasn't that impressed. Is there someplace to get a better price on a Williams set other than ePay?

Thanks!

I too prefer the harder square handle. I think the old SnapOn design is the best, but I'm a weekend warrior and paying SO prices just doesn't make much sense to me.

About 20 years ago I bought some Pittsburgh black square handle, this was back when HF seemed to be copying all of SK's tools, so these were basically like the green hard handle SK's but in black.

These days Williams has the SnapOn style screwdrivers with the square handles...kinda tough to beat if you ask me.

Here's a 6 piece of SK's for $25.34; kinda hard to beat that price. They're outstanding screwdrivers. https://www.grainger.com/product/12...ntly_Viewed-_-AZCART_67708&cm_vc=AZCART_67708

Great advice fellas. Those Williams would absolutely be what I would own if I didn't have an orange hard handle addiction. At least I'm willing to acknowledge that I have a problem.

I love my old Snap On hard handles and my newer Snap On Comfort grips. If you like your Carlyles then stick with it.
