Hello, my name is Phil and I'm a toolaholic. Anytime I see a tool that I don't have a similar version of and can envision a situation where it might "come in handy" and the price is right, it follows me home. Aw hell! I see it, I buy it! ARE YOU HAPPY NOW!!!!

If it is something I am going to obsess about, I just buy the damn thing. Not buying it will literally waste countless hours of your life.

I have a couple screws loose in my head so I keep buying tools to fix those issues. So far the tools I have bought have not fixed the issue so I must buy more.
It is a never ending cycle.

I generally buy tools for a specific project, those get used , and have a good home.

I will also go to second hand stores/flea markets/pawn shops, and adopt orphaned tools, often to work towards the completion of sets that I am collecting

When I need a tool, or see one on GJ I think I will need, I go for it!
Love garage sales & flea markets, I it's a deal I can't refuse, or if it's better that the one I have, I go for it, Putting together a tool box for my grandson, I go for it. Give me a few and I'll come up with more reasons,

Yep, I confess... I'm another tool addict !!!

This is kind of a dumb question. Almost everyone here falls in 2 categories. Enthusiast/hobbiest or work daily with tools.

The answers to the questions are basically do you work in a field that uses tools or do you do it in your free time and enjoy the garage life.

If you don't like it, up yours.

Very logical, I fully agree, saves a lot of time, though it does flatten the wallet.

Hit the flea markets and yard sales. Sometimes you find deals so good, you almost feel guilty.

With all due respect you need some different descriptions to cover pros vs. diyers. Those who have an immediate need and those who are buying proactively and think they may need something down the road. Some here buy to resell. There are many other real reasons why people on here buy tools. Option 1 is I am a pro and i need it ,which is a good option. The other two are basically saying I am impulsive or I just like buying tools. If that is all you you are tying to learn about the members here, that's fine.

I buy tools for need, I buy tools because I think they'll help make a job I am currently doing easier, I buy tools because they might help me with a project I might do in the future, and I buy tools on sale/clearance because it's much cheaper than buying it at retail later. To this point I haven't owned a tool for more than 6mo that I haven't either used, had a specific project that tool will be used for, or sold for profit.

Yeah....More options.

Once upon a time people bought tools and fixed their own .............Fill in the blank.
I used to work fixing.........Fill in the blank.

We buy tools because that's where we come from.

I buy high end tools because I like the way they're shaped. And when I say "shaped," I mean that literally like the difference between a square and a circle.

Usually I find myself in an unforeseen situation at work where I don't have the right tool or the tool I have fails miserably. I then have to improvise or borrow a tool from someone else. This results in a tool purchase. Usually I do quite a bit of research and buy the best quality available.

I think this is a very good post, and Kudos to you for being patient. This is the OP you are talkin to for some perspective...

I mainly purchase my tools from harbor freight because:

- lifetime warranty
- not $30 per wratchet/socket
- store is a 5 minute drive from me
- don't have to chase down a truck to get a replacement

As a DIYer, driveway mechanic I don't foresee myself purchasing truck tools due to lack of space and funds.

What's your point? I buy tools because I need them.

As for what tools I buy, that's hugely irrelevant to this thread. Go to the other thread and point that out , young skillet biscuit.

This seems to be a hugely missing element of these discussions. People buy tools to solve problems. What are those problems? They usually revolve around the project work of various people's needs and/or hobbies. Sometimes those problems are technical problems; and sometimes the problems are economic. Different tools are useful to each case for different reasons...and that's why there is a lot of variety.

The number of people here who seem to think social status is a driving factor of tool purchase is suprising. And I think speaks more to the insecurity of the poster than the general audience here either of posters or lurkers.

Of course nobody wants to ask a question and get a recomemndation that is an outlandishlly expensive solution beyond budget. But part of the wealth of information here is learning about the actual market for different types of tools and why things are made the way they are, and sometiemes priced the way they are.

And its also part of being an adult to learn/understand you do not always get the best of everything or get everything you want. That sometimes you need to use a "good enough" solution because of certain tradeoffs like $$$ constraints. But other times you want to know about the better soutiosn because for more serious/technical work its quite easily possible to be pennywise and pound ($) foolish.

Haha, you're the guy who's probably like "omfg bring back the manufacturing jobs to America!! Buy American only"

Nah my dude, I'm good. I'll buy from whomever I want to buy, and my wants are as you have listed. I'm not wasting my efing time to chase down the matco, snap on tool box like a freaking ice cream shop. I go to HFT because of the convenience, because I need the tool right then and there for the project I'm working on at my driveway, and because of the lifetime warranty.

Why did I go to HFT in the first place? Because I need a f*ing tool. I don't purchase impulsively and no way in hell will I purchase a tool truck tool for the price of my rent. Call me cheap, call me me unamerican, but I don't care.

YOu must be new here :lol::lol:

I have no issue recommending eurpean, japanese, or ROW production when appropriate to the situation. There is alot of uneven quality when you try to say buy and one BRAND or any one COO etc.

90 percent of the told I have I don't need. This weekend for example I needed a 1/4" drill bit that was about 8" long to run a piece of cat 5 at my ex wife's house.. so I bought a few different sizes that were 25" long and a 4' flexible 3/8" bit just because I can.

Is TorKe short ****?

Really un called for, the guy is just stating his reasons.

Any how I did not vote because I fall in to way more than one catagory.

I buy tools because I need them to make money to buy more tools and support my family.

I buy tools because I like tools, they give back to me in many ways.

I buy tools because I want/need to learn a new skill.

Some people buy go fast cars or the newest electronic devise many here buy tools.

You could say that I buy tools because both my income and life enjoyment depend on them.

Over the last week I have used a few hundred different tools, some that cost 100's and others that cost pennies but I enjoyed using all of them.
