I read this after I got it apart... but yes you are very correct. It is pretty clear that the previous owner (once the cotter pin sheared off on the main screw) used the vise for some time simply whacking the slide with a hammer to open the jaws. I took some measurements after getting the dynamic jaw removed.. Take a look at these measurements:
On the slide width - the smooth operating portion of the slide measures 1.933 and the deformed end measures 1.9435. So it gains a 1/100th of an inch...
Similar story on the height. The non-deformed portion measures 2.856 and the fat end measures 2.864.. So it gained 8 thou from all the beating it received.
I have not ever really done any precision filing in my life so it looks like I will need to develop a new skill. I have actually been wanting to purchase a nice file or two for the toolbox, so this can be the excuse to do that. I have never draw-filed anything. Perhaps you can suggest a file type that would work best for draw-filing these large flat cast iron surfaces based on the amount of material I will need to remove. Would a standard mill ******* cut file be the way to go? Is a double-cut ******* flat or hand file too aggressive?
Maybe a double-cut second cut flat file?
I am going to borrow a friends draglink socket and see if that does the trick. If he doesn't have one that fits well, I will go the DIY home-made tool method you describe. I am sure once the swivel base is remove, it will be pretty clear how to get the main nut removed from the dove-tail. Now that I have the vise apart, I can see there is some play in the main-nut, which I assume is normal? Or should these be a very snug fit inside the dovetail?

I totally forgot to mention, earlier, the little grub-screw on the side of the vise does have to come out before you can remove the swivel base screw.......sorry about that...... : )
Its usual for the main nut to have some play in its dovetail. Those vises were assembled 'as cast', which is a 'scale measurement' level of not-very-precise fitup. Like as not, if you shimmed the nut tightly into the back jaw casting, the main screw might bind. A little bit of play in the fitup of the nut allows the nut to find its own centre when load is applied by the main screw.
You can find lots of information about files and filing on the internet. Read, invest in a few best quality files, and go through some learning-curve. It really is easy, and straight-forward work.....albeit tedious as all hell if you've more than a few thou to bring down.
I'd use a small disc-sander to rough down, but ever so carefully, as a disc will do really ugly gouges in the proverbial micro-second, if ever so slightly mis-handled......you can easily guess how I know this......you're safer to accept some tedium, and file the part.
After filing nearly to dimension, use a med. coarse, then fine, emery paper with a flat block to bring up a bit of a finish.
Now, if you feel motivated to 'make a nice job of it', you could consider investing in an Anderson or Coromant carboloy-tipped scraper, and do an ornamental flaking pattern on those flats, in the 'old toolmakers' tradition. All you need is a good scraper, a cushioned hammer (soft plastic tip), and a bit of patience. You can find demonstrations of the technique on the Youtube internet video programme.
This class of flaking is primarily used for oil-holding on machine ways, but works well for making cast flats 'look pretty', as an 'ornamental pattern'.....and, with some practice, is surprisingly quick and easy to do. It is a bit of 'optical illusion', to be sure, which makes most of the old scars and scratches seem to disappear.
Another option, to make old scarred casting flats look nicer, is to do so-called 'engine-turning' or 'damascening', with a rotary pad and abrasive slurry.....this, again, is a bit tedious, but can be a rather elegant 'pride-in-ownership' aesthetic detail. (years ago, I found that details such as this.....trivia as they may be.....would really impress some clients, some of the time)
