I wonder if that would cut the newer stuff like James Harding or Hardee board, which is like 90% cement and the rest is some kind of fiber. (I think), anyway it is hard to cut, and it goes thru saw (concrete) blades like crazy.
Maybe a new market for it?

Don: just in case you have a siding job to do and you don't want to do metal or wood this Hardie board product it pretty nice. here's the tool you'd need to own that is about $200 and i bought one and it works like a charm with very little dust and accurate cuts too. i didn't buy a Makita, but can't recall the brand name i bought cause i didn't spend a lot of time looking for one. my BIL showed up to install some siding on the side of the house and he showed up without his cutter so i bought the tool at the local hardware store rather than to send him back home 90 minutes away.

Bug: i actually was posting this more for you, but since it's Don's thread i thought he might like to see it too in case he decides to build something else on his property or repair some building or shed.

Drives, you gave me a chuckle with this comment. I think Don could restore circles are most of us on the GJ. Hell, he just turned a Port-O-Power into an art piece!

Thanks Brent

That's a really nice complement but way over exaggerated.
I only know the processes used in doing bodywork and they have worked out pretty well for me.

Don: i'm sure whatever method you choose to spiff something up it will look AWESOME and probably a helluva lot better than most of us would be able to do.
glad you got a chuckle and i seriously thought he was kidding, but i have yet to see Don use Electrolysis which is a pretty nice method for removing rust off of old cast iron.

cheers

Thanks Drives

You gave me the answer I was looking for (evaporust) I couldn't think of the word.
I will be blasting the cutter in my big box using 80grit garnet. Then I'll grind down the casting marks before giving it a coat of paint and a little bling.
And yes I do learn new things as I read others threads like Electrolysis takes too long. lol

Don bet you could use it to bend some light sheet metal?

That's a good thought Bolen

Thanks

Hi Herb

Doesn't that stuff come in 4x8 sheets ?
Cutter is only about 20" wide

Thanks for the thought guys I do have a pending project that will need some sheeting. Remember the slab I poured a couple months ago

I haven't done anything to the structure yet, but I need to get it sheeted and roofed.

GREAT NEWS

The vette is drivable
I spent the last few days tidying up the wires under the dash and getting the lights to work (was reading the light switch diagram upside down and couldn't get juice to the headlites) an electrician friend needed a little help with his car today and while he was here I put him to work on the headlite switch wiring

If I remember correctly, the shingle shear is not a shear but two compression knives that meet each other and crack the shingle. It might work for 12" Hardy board, but I think it is too thick for the tool.

Don has it right as usual, best used as a display, except if it was at my house:willy_nil

Solid brass fire plug. I'm impressed. That will look very nice.

I keep looking at that simple old cutter and wonder how I would go about trying to cast it, with no holes, everything filled, and not warped.

You're doing great on it.

Can you blast the brass without eroding it? Or are you using something like soda?

Don: gotta love it when you can PICK YOURSELF cause costs are minimum so any treasure is more fun if you can find a use for it. and especially if you forgot how much you paid for that box of stuff you are digging in.

the cutter's blade actually was visible in the first picture you posted of it after sandblasting. it looks great, but that BRASS FIREPLUG IS NOW ON MY WISH LIST TO FIND ONE.

great find and did you know it was BRASS when you picked it up originally?

i wasn't sure if you heard about that slide cause i'm guessing its a bit north of you, but OMG that looks unbelievable. i've heard rumors up here in the PNW that the Californian's want to close parts of Highway 1 and maybe this is just the excuse. i've been on it twice in my life when i was in my early teens and my mom was freaking out and i loved the views. i think i'm developing her fear of heights as i get older or maybe my mortality is coming into focus more. i hope they fix it and the other bridges and stretches of that road that weren't in good shape either cause that is beautiful part of the USA that people that don't get to see the ocean should be able to see.

it was another day in Paradise up here in the PNW and hope it was the same in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

My treasure box is one of several that I have the pleasure of digging in.
and I'm blessed to have them here on the property.

22 - Copy by don long, on Flickr

I will say that the cost of each box is nominal and they are the results of over 50 years of collecting from a very interesting friend who was a deep sea treasure hunter, a stunt man for the movie industry and a gold miner. He is my age and lives in the barn/woodshop. His main focus was collecting anything brass. All the brass tools have come from his collection and he's tickled to have a place to display his stuff. He enjoys sharing all of it with me and we go digging together every few days. We have decorated the garden and my back hill with old wagons, bikes, trikes, and old farm tools. we haven't made even a small dent in his stuff

In other words YES I knew the hydrant was brass and there are 3 more needing attention

The slide is well north of me and it's a real shame to loose that drive.
I remember taking a road trip in the 62 Corvette several years ago with my concrete cousin. We were headed home from San Francisco driving through big sir when we started racing a fiero down the hill. I held him off on the straight away but on the curves he ate my lunch. My cousin sat in the passenger seat white knuckled because I was sliding the car sideways going through the curves. He finally had had enough and asked me to let him drive. and he scared the **** out of me so we decided to back off and cruise the rest of the way home.

It was a very nice 86 degree day here and I enjoyed working in the garage while my helper built a retainer wall around the barn

Is the hydrant brass or maybe bronze? Did you uncover and markings that give some history about it or makers marks? I see a year of 1994.

DON: great story and great friend too. it really is like picking for real since you maybe didn't have an idea some of these items were in that container/box.

so i have to ask do you own a cement block company or do they just plan to drop off a couple pallets at your place every week or two?

man your guy does nice work on those walls cause even with my OCD they look pretty dang level. nice work with the tractor too while you were supervising. WELL DONE!!

i bet you are maybe getting close to not having any unfinished areas or what's on DON'S TO DO LIST other than painting and finishing the VETTE?

cheers

Hey Andy, there is a cutter like that on the Wichita CL. As of yesterday.
Don, looks like that mallet came over on the Mayflower?
I guess I never noticed all the homes up on the hill of your property. Hope they don't come sliding down the hill?

Hi rmalkow

It could be bronze (not sure what the difference is) it has "Long Beach Metal Works" on the other side. I don't have any history on it though.

You are right I have no idea what I'll be finding in those boxes. My friend Pat is always watching the picker T.V. show and says "I've got a couple of those" or " they picked up this for a lot more than I payed for mine" So I am getting hints as to what to look for. When Ann said I need to find her some old pitch forks for her garden Pat walked over with 3 of them.

so i have to ask do you own a cement block company or do they just plan to drop off a couple pallets at your place every week or two?

My truck can haul 2 pallets of those big blocks at one time so I just show up at the local big box and have them load me up.

man your guy does nice work on those walls cause even with my OCD they look pretty dang level. nice work with the tractor too while you were supervising. WELL DONE!!

Thanks.
He had never put down any blocks or pavers until the other day.

Did you catch the shot of the boxes and containers off in the distance?
That is where I go picking. That area will some day be my western town.
My next big yard project.

Herb
How much are they asking for that cutter??
That hammer is an interesting piece for sure
Not much to worry about with those homes on the hill. There is a large wash between me and them.
I have a rare piece of property, I have housing tracts all around me and yet it looks like I'm out in the country somewhere but I'm right in the center of town.

Thanks Don. So it was made somewhat locally in California. Both are alloys but brass (copper and zinc) is a little more malleable than bronze which is copper and tin. Both can have a multitude of other additives blended in as well. Brass would be more for decorative and musical uses for example. Bronze maybe for more durable uses??? Not sure a hydrant gets used all that much and smaller plumbing valves are brass so maybe it's one big hunk of brass. Either way it will look cool with all your other goodies.

Don: i did see the blue shipping container and when you said you had a couple containers on the property i sort of figured that would be the size of them. WOW just open the door and start digging with maybe your friend helping you figure out what the stuff is sounds like fun.

so a WESTERN TOWN for that space for the Party goers or is that just for you? i had a client build one in his back yard (about a 1/2 acre) and it looked like we were standing in a town they used to set up for the movies. with all the movie props maybe still available from that era in your area would there maybe be something to buy ready made and have it delivered?

another nice idea that i'm sure will look great when you are finished.

cheers and have a great day.

Hi Don,
Just checking in after a while-boy you have been busy as always! I am looking forward to seeing all of the new things when we are over there again after SEMA later in the year. Will let you know how many are coming from Down Under.
Went to the Hot Rod & Custom Auto Expo the other weekend and we have a nice report in the magazine which you will see. There were some great cars and bikes on display plus some US guests-Gene Winfield, Charley Hutton, Jimmy Shine and Tom Kelly-theye were all well received and enjoyed the event. I interviewed Jimmy Shine as we have a Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top fame editorial also in the latest magazine which goes well with the Jimmy Interview. Jimmy does most of his custom work now.
There were a couple of a
mazing sign/memorabilia booths at the show which you would have enjoyed. I am heading to another show at the Gold Coast next week so will check out their signs and see if I can get a couple for your collection.
Say hi to Ann for me and stay well and enjoy.
Cheers David

I've been on vacation at the river for the last several days with no internet ability.
The dock is done and the boat ran fine and I am pretty rested up and back in the saddle.

Hi Drives
The town will be another topic of discussion for our guests.
I'm not aware of anything readily available to purchase so I'll be S L O W L Y building up the town.

The Vette just died (engine sucked an intake valve) It's back to the drawing board with it.
Yes the town will take a while with all the other projects in line.

Thanks for the bump Drives

All is well around the garage. I've been on vacation but did find a couple things to bring home.
Thanks for your concern.

Don, just got my Goodguys magazine with a pic of your garage, nice!

Hi caddyman
We had a great time with the Good Guys group. They didn't tell me that they were going to mention it in the mag. That's very nice.
Thanks for the heads up.

I finally gave up on Tinypics to post my pictures and went to Photo Bucket so we're back up and running.

Today I worked on the Corvette and sand blasted a brass fire hydrant
I also picked up my vintage Blackhawk porto-power case from the pinstriper.
Also I have started cleaning up the casting marks on the tile cutter

I haven't seen a shingle cutter like that for 60 years, ever since my dad and uncle put asbestos(OMG)/cement shingle siding on my grandparent's home. As far as I know, no family member has gotten any asbestos related disease, despite using no safety equipment other than gloves during the project. Sorry to hear about the 'vette, but all the brass stuff looks great!

Here is my latest pick

It's called a Radio Rancher wagon. Even the tires have raised letters with the name.
I'm wondering what color to paint the rail pieces.

A quick search on Google Images reveals a lot of pictures to help see the original red and white paint theme. Looks like it changed possibly on different models and, it's interesting as you look through the pics some have the high end of the upper rail to the wagon front and some to the rear. Not sure which was factory correct. Maybe it was left up the the customer to use it either way. I love old wagons and that is a very cool design.

Well I'm thinking I need to pick up the Vette, give it the it Shorty super special serviceability evaluation and engine safe check.
Look forward to seeing the pinstripes on the Blackhawk and what you do with the wagon.

It's good to hear from you again. The shingle cutter is a first for me and if it wasn't stamped on the side I would have had no idea what it was.

I wish you had done that a year ago. The car is on the trailer tonite ready for a quick trip back to the mechanic shop again tomorrow.
The wagon is in the blast booth waiting for me to sand blast it.

Love the wagon!! I'd do the rails some kind of aged woodgrain gray look. Would look killer against a bright red wagon.

Thanks for that idea Homebody
I was kind of leaning that way until I saw a pic with the inside of the wagon and the rails painted white against the outside bright red with yellow lettering.

So, you're going to post that and not and leave us hanging? Man, I've been waiting for the pics seeing how it came out.

Relax guys
I want to get the box hung before I post it finished here but you can see it in the Blackhawk thread in Vintage tools.
