How's this for an unusual Goodwill find? A Craftsman Ⓤ 1/2" drive ratchet that was in pieces!

I found the empty shell on one shelf and saw the price of $2.99. So I grabbed it thinking it might be useful if I encounter a beat-up ratchet in need of rebuilding. As I continued looking, I found the head. Cool! So I thought ... what if these were all in a baggy that was torn apart? So I kept looking. I found the pawl after a few minutes and a few minutes later, I found the cover with the selector. I never found the other cover, springs, or screws.

Does anyone have parts for one of these they'd be willing to part with?

Thanks!

Brian

I think that pawl is for another ratchet. Your Plomb made ratchet should work with 2 rectangular pawls. For a cover plate you may be able to use one from a fleet or penens corp ratchet.

Pawls should be like this:

That is a cool GW find. You could cut a cover out of a piece of sheet metal just to get it back together again. It seems strange that the pawl you found is not the correct one. Really, how many vintage ratchet parts are lying around the GW? I guess when someone brought it in, they thought that was the correct pawl? The patina sure matches.

The shape reminds me of the V series Craftsmans, but I can't remember exactly what they look like to be sure.

I thought that too. If it's for a boxhead ratchet then it'll have a post for the direction switch to be peened on.
That groove in the op's pawl makes me think not. I'm guessing that's for a switch.

consider hunting for a donor ratchet or using yours as the donor. they turn up from time to time at the OidSchool swap meets i attend. i recently picked one up in very nice aesthetic condition that didn't drive smoothly and wouldn't reverse and the $5.00 price tag reflected this. upon opening it up there was grease and gunk that was almost hardened throughout. a cleaning and lubrication brought it back to smooth operation.

Indeed that was my goal and my call for help has been answered. Smokeshow69 has offered up a Plomb ratchet that had a broken selector. Between the two, I should have no trouble making a nice ratchet.

My Craftsman ratchet is in much better condition than the picture tells. Other than thw oxidation, there's almost no wear on it. It should polish up nicely!
