Definitely a power tool box/case. I think your guess is spot on. Either it's for a drill or a router. I don't think Dremel type tools existed during the Crown Top era (~1962-1974).

Brian

In the early 1960's my father came home with a used Craftsman electric die grinder. It had a 1/8" collet and had a blue wrinkle finish. The trim was silver and if I remember correctly, the logo was the one prior to the Crown Top.

Unfortunately, it died (probably worn out brushes) and was discarded after I left home. He replaced it with a Dremel kit in the 1970's.

If anyone could help me narrow down the vintage of my new to me rolling cart I would be much obliged.

Awesome box. I have the same one. I turned mine into a stand for my bandsaw. I just press fit plywood on top so I didn't have to drill any holes. The original casters are junk though. I need to change mine out.

Found a Heritage Logo Craftsman top box over the weekend at the flea. I'm running out of space for these boxes but I couldn't leave it behind.

This is the best all my vintage boxes have ever looked. Of course, the days preceding this photo, I deep-cleaned and waxed all the boxes. At one point I considered selling off the stacks and buying a modern replacement but I'm glad I didn't.

Wow that looks good, Brent. Someday I have a goal of being that organized, for about a day then I'll start three new projects and the tool bomb will go off.

They cleaned up real nice. Keep em!

Nothing fantastic, but got this almost NOS vintage Powr-Kraft small toolbox last week from a friend. It's barely been used, if it wasn't for a couple small rust spots from storage on the top, it would be perfect. Missing the tray, oh well.

Comp, take a close look at both the bottom and the top; one or the other, possibly a bit of both, has been bent trapezoidal. You need to figure which direction, then put some reverse tension on it.

Thanks Outlaw; I'll try it. However, look closely at the second pic: see how much closer the hinge is to the right side than to the left?

I think Provincial has it. I found some eBay evidence & photos via Google Images. Sears called it Rotary Grinder, Electric Die Grinder, or similar variations. Don't suppose anyone has seen an old Sears/Craftsman tool catalog that included the metal box?

And then the next question: Any recommendations for rust removal & the basics of beginners toolbox/sheet metal restoration?

This is supposedly 1964 manual - steel box accessory shown but different style. My hunch is that box was plastic by 1969-1970.

Certainly isn't vintage, but couldn't find another toolbox thread:
New ProSteel 6-drawer combo available w/ minor shipping damage. Listed price is $200; Lowes has it for $251 (was $279). Is this stuff any good? Any advice on an offer?

Real quick to answer your question. The one at my Lowes is comparable to sears base model, not exactly impressive build quality. Personally I would pass.

Just got this yesterday from a local ad. It's in great condition, just needs a layer of dust and dirt removed from it from sitting in a garage since 1979. Even has the set of original keys for both boxes. Look forward to cleaning it up this weekend with a mild soap and water solution. The seller held the box a few days for a guy that said he'd pick it up last night but he never showed so I was next in line. $200.

OK, I have Before and After pics of the 1954 Craftsman! :bounce:

And there were really no major, or even minor dents in it anywhere!

I'm happy with how it came out. All the Drawers were painted inside and out, and all the rust is gone, primed, and painted Hammer-Tone Grey (Rustoleum).

I did about 1/2 the prep and the kids did the other half. in the before pics, the red corner on one drawer was where I used spotting putty to smooth out the damage the sopt welder did when I re-welded that corner.

All the spot welds in the vertical edge were popped loose as were a couple on the bottom edge. The side "collapsed" a bit and the damaged drawer would hit on the bottom drawer front. All better now!

4 rollers on 2 drawers were replaced with washers by the PO, and I didn't like that. The rollers were 1" diameter bearings, and the local hardware stores were of no help, nor was my collection of misc. bearings. What I did get was some shower door rollers that were 7/8" and other than having to make and install 4 drawer stops for the 3rd and 4th drawers, they work great!

Enough talk; here are the pics:

I don't care how old the post, I can't help but gawk at boxes of GJ and the restoration work that goes into them. Beautiful box. Well done!

Thanks Brian.

You should have seen the "before" state (I forgot to get that pic...) that second to bottom drawer had had the spot welds break and it was dragging on the left side. I de-rusted, and used my spot welder to get it back together, then cleaned it up (which is why the body spot paste in that corner...

Well done!

I'm having fun "restoring" some of my more recent acquisitions but have yet to strip and paint anything. I haven't documented much of anything as it's really boring stuff - including spot welding and straightening drawers & slides. I am taking notes though on paint colors the rest of you are using in restorations. I will eventually get to that point!

Northern California and Southern Oregon folks ...

Blackhawk roller with a full sized Kennedy top chest in Redding for $50/pair. He will sell them individually as well.

I picked up this 1967 dated MBC box today. First one I've ever owned.

When I went to get it, the owner also had this other box sitting there. Not sure what I'm going to do with it, but I liked the look of it. Haven't been able to find a lot of info on the Dehler MFG Co.

Owner thought it was about the same age as the MBC box. Since they're both from companies based in Chicago I guess it's possible. He also had the bench grinder sitting in the corner, so I threw that on the pile. Got all 3 for $120.

Now to make some room.

Pony, That MBC looks identical to the 50's era SO Workcenter, so I suspect that MBC made them for SO.

Those bin/card files, are great parts bins! I have 5 similar units and love them. Most I see are 18 drawers that yours is 24 is a plus!

How deep is it? 17" or 12"?

From some limited research, it does look like MBC made some of the SO boxes. It even includes a junction box on the side.

The bin/card file is 17".

Another box followed me home. It's a Gerstner Pattern makers box molded 44. What I like about it is its 31" wide. It was owned originally by a pattern maker and handed down to his son who is now 72 and is a retired machinist. It's a leatherette and is in good condition given its age. Came with two original keys as well. Now I have a. Is to store machinist tools.

Thru: sweet old Gerts and i think we'd need to see a few more pictures either here or over on the wood cabinets thread and here's the link for it:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305831&highlight=wood+cabinets

6Pony: yep MBC made boxes for Snap on back in the day and can't recall off hand exactly that time frame.

i've owned and own many many versions of those 18 drawer bin cabinets and i've yet to see or own that model. i wonder if that was a small company maybe bought out by Equipto or Lyon cause it looks very close to their cabinets and here's a couple of mine to compare it to.

nice finds

I have a similar setup, mine needed serious cleaning. Simple green is your friend. :D
