I picked this up Wilton Cadet at a sale for $40. It cleaned up real nice, it has a 5 inch jaw.

Sharp looking Cadet you have there. Was it orange originally? We're the cadets sold without the end cap, mine doesn't have one either?

I have recently purchased the same vise in very good shape. It lived an easy life as a city worker before I acquired it. It has since become my favorite vise I have ever purchased, defiantly a keeper for me. Nice Buy[emoji106] e5cf9c865e7cc94329f218804e67904b.jpg

Thanks Brettjull. I like the highlighting on the letters. Was your Morgan black originally?

I'm jumping the gun a little bit because this bad boy isn't in my hands yet, but I worked out a deal with the seller and will be picking it up tomorrow morning.

Rock island swivel jaw, swivel vise. Not sure of the model number. The side has 6" cast into it. The bottom of the base has "77c" and the slide "55". Whatever the model #, it's a big vise and appears to be in excellent condition. As far as I can tell, it's only missing the swivel jaw pin and the base clamp handle. If anyone can confirm the model number, I would be grateful.

The pictures are from the seller who took them at my request.

The price is $150 if there are no issues beyond the two already mentioned. If I find any cracks, the deal will be off (thus my comment about "jumping the gun")

Brian

Great vise there Brian. I have a 5" in this pattern and it is a model 53. From the old add I found yours should be a model 55 which matches the number on your slide. (Lower left cut) Ed.

I believe this model didn't come with an end cap but I could be wrong. The original color was gray almost the same color gray I painted it.

Thanks, Ed!

Well here it is. Ever seen a 6" Rock Island sitting on the passenger floor of a Camry?

The vise has lived an easy life and must be worth 3x what I paid for it!

Found my first Gyro-Vise today. Model 73-1/2.
The seller was asking $3. I handed him a fiver and said thank you.
It still has the pipe jaws. :D
As our Brit friends would say, I'm chuffed !

Congratulations on a great find! Also, kudos to you for paying a little more than the asking price. I did the same thing a few months ago at a garage sale where the prices were just too good.

Finished up this sweet little Reed 403 1/2R for a gentleman who bought a Wilton 450S from me. I forgot to take an assembled "before" pic, so I snapped one disassembled.

I wish he would sell it to me!

I'm not sure why some pics are sideways...I'll see if I can fix that.

The gray paint looks original to me. But if they only came black then I'm not sure. in some spots the bare metal is showing but there is no trace anywhere of any other color. Maybe it was ordered by the city direct from Morgan that way. The vise lived a easy life as a city of Portland employee, and it looked like it came from a wood shop with all the sawdust but lack of any real abuse.

G-ManBart -- looks amazing. What color paint is that?

RustOleum Satin Spruce Green. I've sprayed it over the remains of original Reed green and they are very close to one another. Granted, the original was probably faded from time, but they're still similar enough I consider it a reasonable match.

I really like how this little vise turned out, and I have a weakness for 3.5" vises, and Reed R models, and swivel jaws

rigging vise

Here is a nice rigging vise I found today.
It is in fine condition other than a little rust.
There are no markings on it.
Anybody know anything about it's maker or origin?

Royce

I know that 6" vises fall from the sky for you guys in the rust belt, but they're as rare as hens teeth here in the Pacific NW.

Which is why I'm so damned excited to have finally scored my first vintage 6" vise today. I know ... I already gave it away, but now I have it in my possession - and somehow I picked it without Oregonrockcrusher or Drivesitfar finding it first!

Rock Island Model 55 - thank you Ed for the catalog page!

The seller had a good story to go along with it. The man inherited a 1961 Ford Starliner from his grandfather ~40 years ago. In the trunk of the car were a number of vintage tools, including this vise. The seller has never actually used this vise because it was too big and heavy to set up, so it sat under his work bench for the last 40 years! He was also surprised to learn that the static jaw swivels and even more surprised when I took it apart to load into my Camry. He was a really great guy to talk to and I could have easily talked cars all day. Price was $150 for a 158lb vise. I could not be more excited to finally have a 6" vise!

Brian

Very cool score. I would love to find that. In the rust belt however, while 6" vises are found, they definitely don't fall from the sky. You must be thinking of the North East :) That also looks like an original rock island with the cast in jaws. The model number supports that too. Rockys are super stout.

Woodworking vise

I know this crowd is really into machinists vises but here is an old woodworking vise for your peepers. I think it is a Sheldon that is 75-100 years old. Looks like something off a high school shop bench. It is strong enough to survive both teenager angst and hormones.

All it needs is a little cleaning, BLO and lube.

Love the wood working vise Jim. A Sheldon you reckon, that must make this one I just picked up the same. The only script on it is No 7 stamped into the handle boss. It's missing a swivel base, I'd love to see a picture of what it should have if anyone has info.

I found this poor stray at a local flea market. Picked her up for a c-note.

i.php

No welds or cracks that I could see, jaws close parallel, handle is a little bent and the jaws are well worn, the main nut pin is sheared off so I'll have to replace that, and the top of the slide looks like it's seen some hammering. But otherwise in good shape, closes smoothly, and will make a fine working tool when I'm done with her.
