Hello Joe,

Just finished reading the entire thread, and the write-up by the Perry News.

Well done, sir!

On another note, I believe I spotted a 1964 Fairlane project in your other garage - is that correct? Thunderbolt tribute, perhaps?

Cheers, KB

The write up in the local new was very cool.
Now the locals understand what is going on.
So, how does it feel to be a town celebrity???

Wow, Joe. It took me a few days to read through this thread. I don't know how I missed it the first time. You've done outstanding work on bringing it back to life. I've always wanted a station, but just a small one, like many around where I grew up...one or two stalls. May have to take a ride someday to see it.

By the way, my Galaxie says she thinks she may have found her long lost big brother at your place. She says she may have to find a fitting gift to send to him.

Looks like your Galaxie is a lot nicer than mine.

I just finished your thread, your resurrection was Superbly done! :rocker: This is the first thread I have read all the way through. I usually cheat and only read the OP's post but this time I enjoyed reading all the comments and feed back. Your before and after pictures side by side were great. Can't wait to see what you end up with on our outside wall.

I have been to Des Moines, IA two or three times, I ran a car in the Downtown Grand Prix in the early 90's, in 93 when I was there they cancel part of the races because of the flooding, anyways beautiful farm country.

I have a new screen save to motivate me, I just look at it and think, Joe has a full time job and does all this too! Get to work Hartman! :lol_hitti. I have been working by myself for 35 yrs and need motivation sometimes. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your build, I enjoyed.

Best Regards, Randy

I am always impressed with the cleanliness racecar guys keep their shops :bowdown: Very nice. Thanks for the investing so much of your time reading through my little journey and that goes to all who have followed along.

My first thought was ****...there goes my ability to fly under the radar. I knew there was some interest in the what was going on with the building but I have been a bit overwhelmed by the amount of attention it has gotten. It literally took me 2hrs to put the two decals on the lower doors of the pumps because of all the people that stopped that morning.

Night time pics are some of my favorite pics of the building

Some 4th of July fireworks courtesy of the fine folks of Perry. (the fireworks show is paid for through private donations from a city wide fund raising event in the spring every year)

Hung a few more signs up inside

And a 1 gallon Sinclair anti-freeze can added to the display case

Its been very amusing seeing how many people try and open the "Restroom" door

I was in Boone over the 4th. I tried to get "Lost" in your direction, but it was not close enough to the route to St. Louis. I'll be back soon and will have to make the trip over.

I see a lot of car photos being done in front of your place. I know if you were close my bucket of rust would be one of them.

All the new signage looks great. That picture with the fireworks is definitely a keeper and would be a good one to frame and hang on the wall.

Love that shot of the fireworks over the building. :)

Maybe you could rig up a voice recorder behind the bathroom door that would yell out, "Occupied!" whenever someone tries the doorknob.

Haha, I wondered how often that would happen.

Love the "service" signage you put up, that was the perfect spot for it. Great night shots too, especially the firework one. Pretty darn neat, I say.

Weather has been **** and haven't been able to work outside so I got some work done on the pumps. Stripping to bare, welding up unneeded screw holes and fixing a few dents...pretty much like building an old car.

I media blasted all the smaller parts in my blast cabinet then went over them with a 3m bristle disc on an angle grinder

After that I will finish them off with 80 grit on a da. You could prime right after the bristle disc, but by going over the parts with a da it will show any small low spots that need addressed.

First, I would like to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through this thread. AWESOME job!! I can't speak for everyone on here, but you are doing something that I have always dreamt about doing my whole adult life. My "introduction" into working on cars came by way of working in a Texaco gas station through my 4 years of high school, so I developed a fetish for Texaco and planned some day to do as you're doing. I'm relatively sure that my dream will not happen anymore in my lifetime and that is why I so enjoy following your thread.

I have a Wayne 505 also that I plan to restore as a Texaco Firechief pump. I purchased it and all of the reproduction items that I will need to complete it years ago and now that I've recently retired, it is on my list of things to do. This all leads to a couple of questions I have for you. I am not experienced with the 3M bristle discs that you use, but I like the outcome so I've decided to give them a try. I see that there are different colors (grits)....do you always use the green? How fast do they wear out....should I keep some on hand?

Again, thank you for your diligence in posting throughout this build.

Yes for the most part I've always used the green. They last pretty long. I usually go through 3-5 a year. Just want to bring up that I media blast all the parts first then use a bristle disc and lastly sand them with 80 grit on a DA.

Yes you did spot a 64 Fairlane. Not really planning on a Thunderbolt clone, but more of a protouring/autocross treatment. If your familiar with the Ring Brothers, the 64 Fairlane "Afterburner" they built a few years ago is a big inspiration.

Spent a couple hours digging through the archives of the Perry Chief and came up with a couple advertisements and mentions of the station. All were from the late 30's. As I read the front page article about the attempted break in I was like wow the times sure have changed.

I assume you've seen the Holman & Moody '64 427 Fairlane that was built to FIA specs, some fellow in Germany runs it at the Nurburgring.

There is near to me, laying in a pasture a 4 door like that ..it appears fairly complete and my guess it could be bought ..if , you would need any parts

hwy 18 , Davis exit on I-29 ..

WEST about 6 or so miles , north side of road

https://www.google.com/maps/place/D...9c50859186b5b4!8m2!3d43.2574838!4d-96.9956061

its the lonely blue square at top of picture

I bought a complete 289/c4 4 door a few years ago for $500 bucks at an estate auction. Was really only after the grill and rear "500" trim across the back, but got a lot of good parts. It donated the 289/c4 to the '60 F100 I'm currently building.

Back to the gas station project. I painted the brick dividing walls in the lift bay and although not done in the pics anchored the lift down, Drilling 16, 3/4 inch diameter holes 4 inches deep in concrete on a 95* day...not much fun.

Bought a couple small led flashlights I can place inside the globes to light them up for special occasions. Someday I may run power out to them, but for now this will work.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be able to talk with a local gentleman that worked at the Station as a teenager in the mid 50's Friday evening. During that time the station was owned by Clarence Nath and was Nath's Sovereign Service. His brother Ted ran the tankwagon service. Bob was able to fill in many gaps on the history of the building and the layout of the shop. The bay my lift is in was the "wash bay". He also told of an arrangement with the Montgomery Ward store that they installed all the automotive parts that were sold in the store for them.

Bob was also able to tell me about the Dodge dealership and its location. It was located in what now is a vacant lot to the west of the Napa store. Opened originally as Wheelwright Automotive, then became Palmer Dodge and finally John Struyk Dodge. After the dealership closed a Goodyear store opened in the location.

This is an aerial pic of the area from 1950. My building is the teardrop, the red slash would have been the Dodge dealership. The blue dot was the Ford dealership and the yellow was the Chevy/Buick dealership.

I'm sure that conversation meant as much to Bob as it did you. ;) Nice to be able to capture that kind of history first-hand.

You Sir have been an inspiration! Have spent the last few days reading your thread and you are a machine. Very nice work, not only with this project but also your hot rod projects. Thank you for taking the time to document and the tutorials on most everything you do. I also will be doing the CV conversion on a 64 F100 this winter, but first wanted to get the shop insulated and set up before then, hopefully it will turn out as nice as yours has. Keep up the great work and God Bless.

A few new additions to the office display. i have acquired about half of the early 50's product catalog including a sales brochure.

The gentleman that worked in the station as a teenager stopped by again with some photocopies of a 1957 Perry phone book. Both Perry Oil Co & Nath's Sovereign Service were listed in the book with the same 161 phone number. Perry Oil was apparently the tankwagon service and Nath's was the service station part of the business even though they were owned and operated by the same person.

Neat mid 50's snapshot of the town

Putting the lift to the test...lifted big girl without any issues :rocker:

Phone book ad for the old Sinclair station that was right around the corner from my building
