Nice vise Bcom. You are a lucky man. Is the jaws a little damaged, it's the only thing I see wrong with it.

The pipe jaws are new. The main jaws are very good with a little damage. The guy i got it from said at one time he was gonna mill the jaws down at work and drill and tap it for a bolt on set if he ever got bored. Said he never did it since the main jaws werent that bad.

That was a tough one to find! Listed under "Combination Tool" Here's the patent.----https://www.google.com/patents/US574764

That is some fine digging Twertsy.---You got a real talent there for digging, and a good asset to this thread.

So Would you call that anvil vise a Salzman sample?:bounce:

I sure like to have it, but I would have to do like the government and raise my debt limit.

Here's an earlier patent from 1894. Looks like the above patent was an "improvement." Looks like he sold his patent rights, but manufactured the products under Kennel & Salzman, then Kennel, Salzman & Neely, then Kennel Salzman & Robbins, then Salzman Mfg. Co., all out of Hamilton, OH. Here is yet another patent improvement from 1900. Also, vintagemachinery.org and DATAMP have the manufacturer as the Chicago Flexible Shaft Co. but I am not at all convinced it's the same tool.

EDIT: I believe the attached article is for sales rights, not patent rights after a reread.

Picked up a nice Record 84 Engineers quick release vice at the weekend. Its got 4 1/2" wide jaws
Looks to be all original & could do with a clean & lube

One thing Ive noticed when winding the jaws open is that when its opened to about 3" the quick release ratchet kicks in & it cant be opened any further.
According to the old Record cataloguw it should open to 5 3/4"
Its the same if its closed & if I engage the quick release lever to slide it open it will only open so far & wont open fully

Im not sure if it just needs cleaning & lubrication, or points towards a worn screw or nut,or some other part?
I was hoping to get some advice on a possible solution before stripping it & investigating further

This is coming home to me!!! Praise Jesus! I've never been so excited about an acquisition!

2" jaws, 8" overall.

What did it cost me? Well lets just say that having 2 hands and 2 feet are overrated and unnecessary!

Joe I'm excited you're so excited - but for those of us less vise knowledgeable..what is it?

It is a Lightning Vise from the 1800s. Swivel base, swivel jaw. No one has ever seen one before. Someone on here researched it and found it was made in Elmira NY.

It really follows the NY Eastlake design school (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastlake_Movement) with natural designs and a structured American feel. This is VERY different from the English Victorian design school which featured flowers and other over the top embellishments.

It checks a lot of boxes: very small, very intricate, beautifully designed, exceedingly rare, US made pre-1900.

If I were to write a book on vises this one would be on the cover. As one viewer put it when he saw the pics, he felt like the first time he saw a ******* magazine at 13 years old. It is that special a piece in my most humble opinion.

Congrats! That is just beautiful. And it looks like you can operate it just fine with your stumps.

Replacing a missing foot on a swivel base. I am restoring this 200lb Rock Island 544B Combination vise and when I picked it up the owner said I forgot to mention one ear was broke off. Right away I thought this would be a great practice repair since it has been since 1987 since I brazed anything. After spending some time figuring out how I should do this I went for it. Without going into much detail I machined out a pocket underneath the base then found a donor vise for the ear. A Static Chas Parker was the donor. Yep another transplant. I gave .005 clearance on all fits and used a shim of Silver Solder and sandwiched the insert with plenty of Sta-Silv fluz. Took 10 minutes to heat up and the Easy Flow Silver Solder pulled in and stuck. Machining the base flat will help this repair hold up. Still not as strong as original but this will put this vise back to work.

I just snagged up this super clean Wilton 9300. Totally unused and still has some stickers left. Anyone know where I can get a swivel base assembly for it? If not I'll probably post it for sale. Thanks.

Nice find. Finding the correct vintage swivel base for that one will be tough. A new swivel base for a 300 will fit, but it will look wrong.

Dr. Scott, somehow, when you said "a Parker was the donor" I expected it to be the foot!

Nice work!

It was, I cut the foot right out of the Static. I have found ways to use up some of these vise parts I have. I did not take pic's of the Static when the foot was finished. Thanks Outlaw.

Thanks Oldie, always enjoy your posts. You my friend are my adopted Grandpa.

Looks good Kevin. What type of heat source did you use; Oxy-Acetylene, Oxy-Propane else just Propane?
