2017 Garage Sale Thread

I hadn't planned on running after anything today. But when I looked at Facebook Marketplace while still in bed this morning, I found an ad for a Cyclone Rake tow behind leaf vac for $550, about half the price of a new one. I nudged SWMBO and showed her. "Buy it if you want to, we're raking leaves this fall ourselves with both kids in college." It was advertised as 14 years old, with a few mouse chews in the canvas bag.

I've been threatening to buy a riding mower once my youngest left for school but hadn't found one for the right price. It seemed premature to buy a tow behind leaf vac without anything to tow it behind.

However, today musta been the day! Two ads up in the Marketplace was a Toro 16hp, 38" hydrostatic drive riding mower for $325, and in the next town over from the vac!

BL: I got the vac for $500 with the optional hand-held leaf hose, and the Toro for $300! The only thing missing is a mower deck to leaf vac hose adapter. I could buy one, but I think I'll try making one from scrap sheet metal.

I went to a garage sale Saturday that advertised "tools" and found a backyard full of stuff that had been sitting out for some time. It hasn't rained here for a couple of months, and the stuff had obviously been out in the rain. Nevertheless, there was some stuff worth picking.

I asked if I could make a pile and the woman said yes. I piled up all the stuff in the first photo, and asked "how much for all of it." She replied $10.00.

Sunday I went to the local flea market. It was quite hot this weekend, but it was pretty crowded anyway. I found some stuff I liked. Much of the stuff I bought was of mixed brands, so I am showing batches I purchased.

First, a couple of Plomb DBE, a Couple of Vlchek DBE, a KEI metric drain plug wrench, 1/4"hex bit holder with bits, and a Plomb socket case all for $22.00.

Second, a P&C 2248E DBE, Plomb Pebble 11/16" combo, and Proto 3/4" crowfoot for $6.00 total. At another vendor, I found the Proto ball pein with original faceted handle, Aviation Specialties screw starter, and Crescent end nippers for $12.00.

Third, another vendor had so many bins to pick through that it took me three passes to find all this stuff. From the top: Barcalo DBE with an unusual angle to one end, it looks factory, since the plating is undisturbed where it would have been heated to change the bend angle. Next is a Vlchek 11/16 combo that I mistook for a Plomb, then a P&C 9/16" deep socket and a Craftsman 7/16" socket that I need to replace a missing one in a set. Also a 1/4" drive extension for filling a road set and an SK breaker bar for a lug wrench on a truck I have. Then Armstrong and Craftsman 11/32" combos because this size in never in sets and is used on #8 machine screws. Below them is a "Made by Snap-On Tools" angle DOE 9/16". Following that are a 9/16" Pebble Plomb combo, an early Plomb DOE 1/2 and 9/16, and a P&C 7/16" combo. The total damages from this vendor was $9.00!

Finally, I walked by a Golden Vise! It must have been my lucky day because he sold it to me for only $25.00. It is a Craftsman 5195 that is missing the swivel base. The handle was bent pretty bad, but I straightened it before I took the photo. The jaws look pretty good, after I wire brushed them to get the gooped-on paint out of the grooves. After I lightly filed the burrs off the tail end of the slide, the jaw screws in and out smoothly. I will try some Purple Power cleaner on the paint to see if it will come off. If it does, then I'll try to remove it from the Craftsman badge.

After the flea market, I returned to the garage sale from Saturday. It had been picked over pretty well, but a few items were left that I was interested in. I figured that I could take a chance on some items at the lower prices.

A Cal-Van double flaring tool, missing the sliding rod for the screw, but otherwise complete and looking unused.

Bit holder with a few bits, 8 punches and chisels, mostly Craftsman, but the punch with the large end is P&C.

Proto T 6016-4 Torque wrench. I tested it against my beam-type torque wrench when I got it home and it reads perfectly!

I've been looking for a belt sander and the older Porter Cable models have a good reputation. This #362 ran well and the belt tracked straight when I tested it at the sale, so I took a chance. It came with an extra new 3M belt.

Total for this sale was $33.00.

Just picked up some "Free scrap metal" off of Craigslist...thinking an in wall motorcycle lift is the final outcome for this one:

Came with hydraulic pump and all the fixings'.

That lifter for free!!!! you **** I would have to fit it to my tray top ute as light duty tailgate lift.

Keep an eye on CL for a mower deck. They show up occasionally (or do you just need the hose connector that fits to the deck ? ) I think there is a guy in your area that advertises mower parts on CL. The vac works better if it has the mower blades forcing the cuttings up the tube.

With all the frustrations, it's still worth it to have the mower and tow vac. I wouldn't give mine up.

Now you need to find a walk behind blower.

Can you post some more close ups of the Barcalo wrench on the DBE thread here? I'm interested in whether is has any special markings or part numbers on it.

Thanks--it was your find and post that got me to thinking about one for myself (that's evidence that this acquisition thing is a contagious disease that spreads through online forums ).

The part that I need is the adapter that goes from the mower deck to the leaf vac's intake hose. Fortunately, the Toro came with a mower deck. I think I have enough scrap metal laying around to build one. If not, a replacement is only $160 and a week's shipping away.

Oh, and a snow throwa is one thing I do not need. The 7-ft plow blade on the front of the truck takes care of all that!

Morning trip to the flea yielded 3 Bonney DOE wrenches, 1 Indestro combo wrench, 3 New Britain double-square 1/2dr sockets, 3 square and 1 hex 1/2dr Hinsdale sockets, a 1/4" Blue Point nutdriver, a Diamalloy S55 dikes, a Utica/Bell System specialty pliers, a Klein/Bell System specialty pliers, and 9 iron tripods. Neither the vendor nor I know what they are meant to be, but we both agreed they could hold wide candles.
$18 total.

Well, I planned on working under my truck this morning, but it rained last night and I didn't want to be dripped on while fighting rusted bolts. So I decided to take the truck out for a run to dry it off. I ended up at 3 yard sales. the second one was a bust, but the other two yielded one item each. I spent $20 on the day (not counting the $110 for Toyota parts that won't be in until tomorrow afternoon).

First stop.

The tune up cabinet was a "I don't need it, I have no place for it, I don't know what I'd use it for, but I can't leave it behind for that price." purchase. If anyone local is interested, it might be available.

When to an estate auction last weekend for a gentleman who used to own a tractor repair shop and in his retirement worked on restoring old machines.

I snagged a set of 3 Nicholson files. These things are crazy sharp. They will cut you. Paid $4 for 3 and they are still in orignal box.

Then after 6 hours getting suburn they finally got to the item i was there for. 10 inch craftsman band saw. Not in amazing condition but still works. Probably work great with a fresh blade. Ive watched these go 75-100 bucks around here but i luckily snagged this for $25 cuz it was late and hot and nobody wanted to buy anything anymore.

And finally here's some nice jack ****. I didn't buy these and they sold for scrap weight basically and sadly thats their fate as they were bought by a scrapper if i had the room i woulda gon after the huge one but no dice.

Its hard to see but theres 2 of them there and the front one is around 4ft long i think and crazy heavy.

I havent got a post in for a bit I have been super busy. But, I hit an Estate sale a couple days ago and came away pretty happy with my small haul. On te way I stopped at the local flea market and talked to a guy about a vise/anvil combo he had. Asdked $35 for it. I showed him it was rusted shut and gona be a chore to fix. He took $5 for it! SAid it was too heavy to put back in his trailer. On to the E sale. House beloinged to a Dr that had passed away. so there were bout 500 cars there when I arrived 20 min after opening. Shop full of Craftsman wood working power tools. Several sets of cheapo sickets and such. nothing to outstanding to me. Looked in the hidden places and found some long clamps that looks to be Craftsman but not sure.. Cant see the logo very well, but green and made in the USA on the bodies. Found a 1/2 Cman ratchet for $3 in the shop. that was bout it. Headed tgo the garage vbuilt into the house. there were several Carry around tool totes for taknig with you to work on projercts. Found the other 2 Cman ratchets, Proto stud puller, Blackhawk swivel socket, Craftsman pipewrench, an old emeergency Pipe clamp wrench, Bonney extention, Mac DBE, 4" Cresent wrench, Looks to be a vise handle, 1/2 Craftsman circle H breaker and 7 circle H sockets, a Pony and 2 B&C clamps, Craftsman Visegrips, and a roll of PONY wrenches. fuller screwdriver, small Nichiooson file, williams ignition pliers, Pennens 1//4 breaker bar, williams superwrench Combo. also inside the house found a small collection of diecast vehicles. 2 model A pickups like the one Im bilding so I was excited to see those! also some of the stuff was i nside the My Buddy toolbox. Out the door for $30.

EDIT: Anyone know much about these RAM wrecnhes? They look to have the exact same grind shape as my Mac wrenches... Cant find anything on them ..

I found a couple of these myself at a flea market. I have a tendency to use large files two-handed (one at the tip, and one of the rat tail) and boy do those things slice up calloused hands. Gloves required!

ahh thanks 3bay, I couldnt find anything on the Ram wrenches. Its a copy of a Cole Swivel vise. It has a hole underneath for a leg, or it can be mounted on an I bem. Its got aslot under the anvil. thats what I have read on them so far. Pretty neat. Still working on getting it cleaned up and functioning again. the anvil part is really nice like it was never beat on!

No sales yesterday, No sales today, but I did make good progress on the box project, and I did get a sewing machine off CL so I'm all "tooled up" for the tent project, which is next. $25 for this Singer and it was 5 min away!

Fairly basic, but I've tested and adjusted it (After a trip to get needles and bobbins) and I'm satisfied.

I don't remember if I posted this but a few weeks ago I got this Overlock/Serger, that I'll need for this tent project as well. $40 plus a $30 dollar part it needed:

I went to the Auburn Fall Auction and Swap Meet this past weekend at Auctions America in Auburn Indiana. Walked my feet off in the swap meet looking for some bargains. It was a hard task at an event like this as vendors seem to really jack up prices high. A lot of stuff got packed back up at the end of the day.
I bought some old Yamaha motorcycle parts and a Cal Customs foot pedal from one guy at closing time and he said I was his only paying customer all day. He gave me a pretty good deal just so he would not have to take it home.
Found a really cool old Wards motorcycle horn. I'm hoping it works and can be put back into use.



A tiring but fun day hunting through tons of stuff.

It's sitting comfortably in the back seat of my car while I sit comfortably at my computer this evening so I haven't inspected anything on it. If there's a place to look for date codes, I'd be grateful for that information!

The seller wasn't the original owner (close in age to me) and I didn't ask where it came from prior. I was amused that the seller had previously tried giving it away to a family member and was unsuccessful, though.

Well, it isn't a score like Brian made, but I hit an estate sale last Friday that turned out OK. By the way, I dislike driving an hour to a farm sale, only to find that the estate is full of Harbor Freight junk. I want that, I can drive down the street. But, in any case:

Proto crows feet, Starrett catalog, SK Wayne 1/4" rat., Bosch grinder, 1" reamer, 1" pipe tap, Dayton drill index (full) auto stethoscope, Proto Pro impact sockets in a Proto flying lady holder, unused Martin pin spanner, P&C and Proto drill outs, an SK Wayne deep that I needed to complete a set, mini bungy cords and a counting clicker. $25
Then went camping with the wife south on the coast from here, and spotted some antique stores, where I found this:

'40's Dremel moto tool no. 2 in its box. Dated on the box '46, it doesn't run, but it looks super cool. $17. It has power going in, the switch works, so I am guessing its the brushes. May have to hit the sewing machine store to find the right size but I can get inside without to much trouble. We shall see.

It is technically a piston rack but I am sure they where used for multiple uses over the years [emoji23] I can't believe no one in the guys family didn't want it! That thing just oozes cool factor just sitting there! Wonder if it has the clips inside the drawers ? To my knowledge there is no way to absolutely date these, it is more of a time period or seeing what catalogues they are it as far as I know!

Scored these pliers and socket racks a few months ago at a garage sale and just now got around to posting them! Include channel locks, Klein, crescent tool co . Also got the old school Mac scraper and the blue point screwdrivers. I paid $17.50 for all if I recall correctly !

It might/is probably an east Indian/Pakistani copy, but I don't care s long as the valve works and it whistles.
Big goober fix was snotted on and then not turned down all the way... Maybe a second.
I have a 26gallon tank with a two inch bung, I figure a three second blast is all I'll get on a fill.

A little research shows its 7x14" size is an oddball.
No maker mark I can find on the outside. Appears unused.

Six numbered lockers 21 inches deep 31 inches tall and 36 inches wide with spring loaded hinges.

Butcher block on top, casters on the bottom and it becomes a $350 antique I bought for 40 bucks.
