To cut things... :)

They make other models with wider handles and shorter blades, among other things. This is just the model I like.

To be more specific, it gets used to cut off electrical tape, strip insulation off self supporting inner duct.. basically anything the requires a knife that you don't have to baby. It would be nice if one of these companies would make a blade out of better steel like D2 or something. But it sharpens easy enough with a Klein or GMP hand held sharpener. Wish I could say the back of the blade doesn't get hit with a hammer on occasion, but that would be a lie.

Thanks KC.

I have a couple Klein sheath knifes, and the GMP one with the thicker handle. Used to use a hook blade too, but I haven't seen that model you have. Looks interesting.

Love me a good knife.

I work around the water these days.....I like the Spydercos.

I used to hit the back of my Klein knife too.
Never had to worry, good knifes. Doesn't hold an edge that well, but bulletproof.

Cool thread!

Thanks for all the responses..Neat to see all the tools. I'll dig out the oldies I have around the shop and take picts sometime soon.. Picked up a very small 25' fish tape for about $6 from Rural King, seems like they're cleaancing Klein.. picked up a cabinet tip screw holding driver just shy of $5... Saw the multi tap screwdriver for $12, turned my brother onto it.. was heading there "within moments" as my interpretation of his message back to me "on it...". LOL..

Keep em coming....

My favorite Klein knife -
image.jpg

And this is my favorite Klein grip by far.. did a lot of searching to find these again. I was told they were recalled years ago.. this is the most desired model at my last job, and just had my new placed get a few of em.. the file inside the jaw makes sure they never slip.

IMG_2161.png

Searched far and wide for what I felt was the perfect tool pouch, and this is what I went with.. love it.. I have two pockets on the opposite side of my belt also that hold my Klein knife and Knipex mini bolt cutters.. coated the pouch with about 10 coats of neatsfoot oil as soon as it came.

IMG_2162.png

I have mixed feelings about the Klein ratcheting screwdrivers I had my company get. They are nice enough quality, but the bit arrangement is mind boggling, and the bit retention could be a little better.. i almost prefer the non ratcheting 11-in-1 Milwaukee over it.. Almost...

Do you think klein knifes of that type have suffered in quality recently? I got a new one about 2 months ago and it just wont hold a descent edge, have reverted back to the tried and tested folding pocket knife style.

Few more old ones I have picked up used over the past year or so. Still need to clean up the red handled linesmen.

Couldn't say, I never had and old model.. the blade on this does dull quick.. I just keep the sharpener in the tool tray and give it a few swipes to keep a decent edge.

I picked these two up at a pawn shop this weekend out of their "junk" bin.

Klien 9" Linesman and 8" Long Nose.

I might have overpaid. $1.99 for the linesman and .99 for the long nose. :rocker::thumbup::bounce:

I have a few stray Klein tools that have mostly made their way to me via yard sales etc. I go to HD and appalled at the cost of them although I will fully acknowledge they are worth it. Will continue to look for the old gems that are out there and are being unappreciated.

I recently bought this Klein Switch Driver and I love it. I keep it in the drill case and works great. Made in USA. Unfortunately discontinued, but plenty are available online.

I've got one of those, and keep mine in my Milwaukee drill bag. I've got mixed feelings about it though. Overall I like it but I like dedicated drivers the best. It's highest positive is that the shaft retention device is very sturdy and gives me the most confidence over other multi-bit drivers. I use it occasionally for going light but I usually grab my dedicated drivers by default.

My employer gave me a pair of Klein 63016 Heavy duty cable shears. They work great for cutting the security cables off railcars. ce24ce11271693b848e08aed860fb95e.jpg

I've got a pair of these in Channel Lock brand.. nice tool. Majority of my pliers are CL.. so a bit less expensive than the Klein, but still made in the USA.. and good for a hobby / home repair person like myself..

I'm a little late to the party, but here's all my Klein stuff including my hat and belt buckle. Only thing missing is another pair of flush cutters that I can't find.

I'll have to round all mine up in one place. I have some in the shop, some in the truck, some. I'm bad for loosing one, replacing it, and finding it 6 months later in a coat pocket.

Is that orange tape or paint on your tools ? I'm guessing to keep others from borrowing them permanently...

It's orange tape, from when I was an apprentice a few years back for a short while. Everything without tape was bought more recently for my current job.

I'm thinking about removing the tape and engraving everything.

I felt in Kleined to post these items:

Klein Cable Grabber
Klein Tie Wire Reel
Klein leather harnesses for climbing spurs are great quality but the spurs themselves are Osh Kosh. I had a real nice set of Klein spurs that had the interchangeable spurs on them and aluminum calve supports to boot. They were much fancier than these buildwise but I passed them on to a young buckaroo. These Osh Kosh are about the longest spurs I've seen at 3.75".
Klein Grip-It strap wrench (aluminum)
Klein #8 Pliers
Klein side cutters

Here are some small Klein duck bills my brother owns and some interesting side cutters.

2oolhound.. love that first picture.. pure art. I had a pair of climbing spurs too, Kleins... but gave them away when we moved from South Bend to Columbus IN.. Moving guy was hunter and was super interested in them so gave them to him.. Kick myself for doing it.. but he was stoked.. so in the end they found a good home...

I got one of those tie wire reel on a tool belt I got from a pawn shop. Has been sitting in a drawer. I assume it would be belt mounted for someone who is going to be up in a bucket or up a pole or something. What do/did you use yours for? What wire do you use to 'refill' it?

Funny how that works… at the time it seems like the right thing to do but every once in a while we kick ourselves for letting them go. I fractured my ankle 6 months ago but I'm still moping about parting with my Kleins. :dunno:

The tie wire reels are used on a belt by iron workers who tie rebar reinforcing for concrete pours. They use more tie wire than anyone else and need it like it just flows out their sleeve. 16 gage is the most common. When I was logging we kept #16 on these reels for putting whippings on cables, mousing hooks etc. but they were tossed in a sack with all the other tools and not worn. It's much more efficient to get wire off a roll with one of these.

I keep the one in the photo mounted in the 7' high rafters above my work bench just for dispensing little bits of wire as it's needed. It's way faster than trying to unwind a small length off a roll when you want a short length. I cut a piece of 1/4" thick plastic the width of the belt loops on the reel and about 8" - 10" long. I screwed the top to a rafter so it hung straight down then slide the reel onto it and used a couple self tapping screws just below the lower belt loop of the reel to hold it on there and voila, a handy wire dispenser for when ever I want to hang something to paint, put a safety wire on something, put a whipping on something to strengthen it etc.

thanks for the info. Is there a certain size spool you would need to reload it? The one I have has ~10-20ft in it if I'm guessing, but I have no experience with it to know what to put in if I happen to use it all.

These reels hold standard 3.5 lb coils of wire that are about 400' of wire. Most hardware stores should carry it and sell single rolls. Ask for tie wire or rebar wire. There are several coatings available but the common one is black (I think oxidized). It looks like this:

attachment.php

Don't undo the temporary wires that hold it together until you load it. If you change the shape of the bundle it will be hard to load. If you run across these wire bundles at garage sales they can be spread out wider and looser from people taking wire off by hand. It usually gets crossed up from dispensing wire off by hand and the roll will be misshapen and hard to load. If you buy fresh wire and remove the 2 retainer wires and pop it right in the reel right away it will just drop in.

If you use any amount of light tie wire in your shop it will be worth loading your reel. If you find a small board that fits through the belt loops on the reel and attach it to a wall, bench or rafters etc and fix the reel to the board it is handy as heck. You'll love it. Just make sure you orientate it how you're going to use it so you put the wire in so it feeds out the way you want it to when it's mounted in position.

It is super rewarding to get to know tricks of the (various) trades like this.. Now I have to land one at a flea market, yard sale, whatever. I have several 1# "cans" of stainless steel lockwire that I use for most things, but having another alternative is priceless. Thanks for sharing......

Klein tie wire reel

May also hold "Lashing Wire", (maybe not, I'm not 100% on that) Like this - http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=152473748374

It'll be similar if not that exact type.

If you don't have a dispenser, what you can do also is wrap the roll in electrical tape, all sides except the middle on one side. Cut the ties that hold it together, and then you can pull the wire out from the middle of the coil instead of trying to "roll" the outside wraps off the bundle. The dispenser is better, the wire will roll off completely straight. Out the middle it will corkscrew a little, but for small pieces a few feet long it's not a big deal at all. Just pull it straight.

Just like this -

Same thing works for bundles of string too.

So show us the after, and loaded up please.

We had our internet doctored up a while back and the tech had an old style 5118 (maybe?) series pouch no longer being made. It was almost like an ammo belt, all open end pockets no pouch. I wanted it badly!

From left to right, it's Klein Lineman knife, Knipex mini bolt cutter, Stanley (USA) Flathead, Knipex Lineman pliers, 10" Knipex Alligators, 8" Knipex diagonals.

I think the pocket the lineman pliers are in, is suppose to be for a folding wooden ruler. The hook I think is intended for a lineman knife (can't imagine having an open blade rubbing against my leg), but I've seen pictures of people using it to hang an adjustable wrench from also. The knife holster is also a Klein, the other one I believe I just got from Sears to hold the bolt cutter when I bought them.

Yeah... that's a pretty cool setup... I use the clip to hold my headband light and keep it with me... worked well while working at my sister's rewiring project......

That one that looks like it's for a mason's ruler (folding wood typically) is cool too....
