How do I upgrade my GJ account so I can view Third party postings?
Thnx in advance
08er

It has nothing to do with GJ. You have to have accounts with the 3rd party host the GJ poster is using. I think most people are trying to get away from these 3rd party hosting sites as it can cause problems later when they change their business model (from free to pay) or their T&Cs (Terms & Conditions).

I ran into this Snap-On dolly cart today. Very practical. Small hardware and parts compartments under the lid inside the top thing. Well-partitioned drawers, including a removable tote tray. Guy wanted $100. Though sorely tempted, I didn't buy it. It's straight and the drawers are square, but it needs to be blasted or strip-sanded and repainted. The finish is in terrible condition. I don't think the bar on the back is original. It's welded on and appears to have been added to hang stuff from. I could be wrong. I'm no expert on this era Snap-On boxes. Maybe it's original and has been repaired. But I don't think so. I may change my mind and talk myself into it if it's still there tomorrow.

I think I would have bought that just because of the wow, never seen one factor. Do you think it's all one piece or do you think the parts/top was added?

It's one piece. I found it in the Snap-On catalogs. It's a KRD-340. It first appeared in 1960 Catalog X. They called it a Tool Truck (as in hand truck). And I was right about that bent flat bar stock - not an ugly repair, someone added it.

We saw this week (I think) someone posted a gray & red without the chevron emblem but with a Sears|Craftsman logo. Here's a red Craftsman 6-drawer toolbox with the chevron logo I saw on CL. Would this also be from that transition period which appears to be in/around '76? Just curious. Rileysan?

It is! The built-in dolly/hand truck aspect is what drew me to it.

There's a running joke among some of us WWII collectors loading up our vintage flip top or hip roof cantilever boxes or armorers’ chests with so many vintage tools that we can no longer lift them. There's a vintage cover of Army Motors magazine from 1943 we all get a kick out of. It shows a hundred mechanics fanned out and running up a hill with their toolboxes in one hand. The perspective of the camera is from the top of the hill and the men closest to the top are drawn in full figure, heroic, handsome and running like Olympians, without breaking a sweat. Like they're taking an occupied position armed with their toolboxes. The GMTK in the box weighed 75 pounds!

I wish that Snap-On KRD-340 was about 20 years older, in better condition, and OD green!

But I have some other ideas...

That falls into the grey area of "I don't know".

I have a pretty good idea based on the 1977-1978 catalog.

The images for master tool sets show red boxes with "chevron" logos, whereas the images for the individual boxes show the square logo used from this point forward. What reasons that may be, I don't know, but I do know this transition of colors and logos happened gradually from 1976-1978, leading to a hodgepodge of Craftsman tool boxes that will take years to unravel.

I think the mystery of this stack can be solved by looking at the inside of the lid on the top box.It looks gray to me.If the box stared out life being red,the inside of the lid would be red as well. This tells me that the stack was gray to start with, and was repainted red a long time ago, before all the wear and tear happened.I think the chevron badge was original, but the color is not.

In this case, I agree with you. Being color blind, and this picture being a poor quality CL image, I overlooked the obvious signs, the main one being the inside of the lid. Not the splotchy color, but the fact that the lid has been reinforced with ribbed sheetmetal that was standard on the boxes made in the 60s. I also notice the top box has the optional combination lock and the bottom roller has the lock located in the door, which makes the roller 1966 or older.

Looks like they all started life as gray & red boxes!

BTW - that 2d middle chest is the rarest of the middle boxes. I don't know if these are near you, but I'd pay $100 for the middle chest by itself!

I picked up this well used Proto box at a garage sale. It's ironic that it has Snap-on stickers. It shows many similarities to my '70s Craftsman upper box which can barely be seen on the left. The lid, latch and lock areas are virtually identical. Any ideas who made this box and when?

Waterloo made the box. I can only guess on the 'when'. I'm thinking late 70s to early 80s

Thanks for the information, Brian. Good to know. Probably made just about the same timeframe as my late '70s Craftsman box. No wonder the details are so similar.

I grew up right across the street from the naval aviation supply buildings in phila.Do you think that catalog page is talking about that same navy depot?

Here are a few pictures of my NAF tool collection. I can't even come close to lifting that Kennedy cantilever box off the ground. I could really use one of those dollies.

Thanks, Todd. The Proto box was made in 7/77 and my Craftsman box was made in 1/77. Pictures below.

Found this JC Penney toolbox at a thrift store a few years ago for $10. It is full of miscellaneous stuff I need to go through still.

Not sure how old it is, or even if it's that high a quality, but it will come in handy for something, I imagine. I just have to figure out what...:dunno:

It has seen better days, but I hope to at least clean it out and clean it up over the winter.

Found this Kennedy (620, I believe?) as part of a package deal. Cleaned it up with Murphy's, and rubbed it down with some BLO. Looks much better. Already loaded, and ready to serve for many years.

Can anyone date it based on the sticker?
