I added on to the shop and now are starting to set it up.
The north bay will be dedicated to wood milling equipment.
The center bay will be for hot work and assembly.
The south bay will be storage and parking for the skid steer and or truck.
The west bay will be for the lathe and future vertical mill.
1st pic north bay
2nd pic south bay
3rd pic south bay looking from west bay
I got started moving shelves and junk today.
I got a long way to go, but that's OK

I like that overhead insulation :)

I am not quite at that point, still finishing up wiring, so congrats on being ready to "move in to the new space"!

Biggest problem I have is reprogramming my brain after a big rearrangement. I recall where certain things "used to be stored" and some are more difficult than others to find...for awhile.

Looking really good, I like your general plan.

That looks like a major undertaking. Can I suggest you place the hot work operations on the opposite side of the building from the wood working space. I work in Ship Repair, and routinely do hot work in machinery spaces and store rooms. The store rooms make me more nervous than the machinery spaces. Would rather contend with flammables than combustibles.

Hey, that ****-hole looks familiar, I did that last year. I ended up tossing a lot of stuff I figured I would never use, and giving away a bunch more. Then I put up a 13x28 portable garage and moved a bunch out of the shop and started over.

It is a extremely long project, I'm still moving things around, but well worth it.

Good luck with yours.

Thanks all,
Bad Idea,
The hot work area is isolated from the milling area by walls and doors.

How do you like having spray foam right on the roof like that?

I have an open joist ceiling and have thought about going the route like you have

D45,
I'm a big fan of sprayfoam, it really seals a building up.

Made some headway today.
The milling area is 12'x44'
The equipment that needs squose in there is;
12" planer
6" jointer
Shaper
16" drum sander
Spindle sander
Mortiser
Drill press
6" belt and disc sander
2 ea 14" bandsaws
16" table saw
2 ea 10" table saws
13 foot lathe

I'm scratching both ends trying to get the room laid out.

My dad and grandfather did that a couple times when I lived at home. It was a version of what my wife does with furniture. ("Move the couch over here. No, try here. I think I liked it better over there.")

Nice shop. Hope you find your version of perfection. Personally, I cant decide if I want a do-it-all practical jack-of-all-trades or a pretty, single purpose garage that I hate to get dirty, much less cluttered.

Thanks Leland,
I'm all for getting them dirty and making it happen.

If you put most of that equipment on casters you can rearrange to your hearts content. I have both of my bandsaws on casters and just roll them out when I need to use them. Even my 30 ton press and Pexto stomp shear are on casters. One of the small lathes is on a U.S. General 44" cabinet so it rolls around also. best thing you can do for ease of access and cleaning.
I use a lot of the HF furniture dollies. Cut down and repurposed or simply strip off the casters for use elsewhere. You can't buy four casters and attaching hardware for the price of one furniture dollie.

Thanks Astro,
1/2 of the machines are on wheels now and I'm going to wheel a few more.

Looks nice so far, Royce.

Aren't you going to cover up that foam? That's like having gasoline hanging on the wall, and the insurance guy won't allow it.

How is the progress going? Did it end up snowing???

Yes, winter has come but not too cold yet.
Progress is slow, I got distracted with my well that took a **** and some fun projects.

I hope to get back to shop construction soon.

We got water again, big hole in the stand pipe right at the pitless.
That happened on Friday, had the stand pipe replaced and a new pump dropped in today.
I got over 30 years out of the old one, that ain't bad.
Mama's happy

Got through the holidays and now have a bit of time to put towards the shop.
I pulled a huge wood stove out of the shop to make more room.
With the stove gone, I'm going to move the welding bay across the shop.
That means relocating the wire driver boom, before that, I thought I would cover the walls.
I'm using some tin that was salvaged from a meat locker.
Hope I don't get mad cow disease from it!
Two courses up and one to go, then on to moving the boom.

Old Red has about out lived his usefulness, if he ever had any.
He is always in the way and not once has he ever held up his end.
That is why he was hung from the joists.
I'm thinking about euthanizing him, need a fun way to do it.
Anyhow, got the last of the sheets hung, window cased with angle and started putting some flat bar up to hang stuff from.
Should get started moving the boom tomorrow.
Thanks all

Royce

Hopefully you are moving it closer to the circuit panel, otherwise rewiring those feeds aren't fun!

Anything that involves fire will do.

I'd suggest calling up Adam Savage. He'll come up with an excellent Mythbuster-esque farewell for him, no doubt employing either heavy artillery or plastic explosive.

Nice headway on the rearrange. I'm in the incredibly slow process of rearranging the home garage here as well. It's far less enjoyable than using the shop I tell you!

Yes, it will be closer to the panel, in it's new locate.

Fire is always a good time.

Speaking of artillery, I'm thinking maybe setting him up to catch a bowling ball coming out of a mortar.

Finished up the hanger flat bars today, got the boom cut loose and lowered down.
I'll start the new boom mounts in the morning.

Looks great Royce, I may have to do that, I have always just dragged my miller 22-A around, but now that I have the 211 I can use that for most of the stuff. How hard is it to get the feeder off the boom?

Thanks forAK and 1/2Cup.

Strouty,
I put a winch on it to lower almost to the floor.
I mounted it with 2" and 1-1/2" pipe.
So, all it takes is unscrewing a coupling to remove it.
Here is a couple detail pics.
Thanks

Thanks Royce, my power supply is too big to mount up like that, but the feeder can definitely be mounted up on a boom. You always have neat custom stuff, the sheet metal looks great.

I could put the vise on the round table and get rid of 1 more piece. Those are some nice pieces. It does get the machine out of the way.

Any updates Royce? Is the snow gone yet?

Howdy Strouty,
No progress on the shop, other than I built a a gantry.
I did add a few machines to try and make room for.
Marvel saw
Wellsaw 8
GMC 300 panel saw

The rivers have not went out yet, but the snow is slowly going away.

How about you, are you gaining on it?
