Maybe you can file for Historical Landmark status and get a grant to defray some of your costs. :) That might have too many strings attached, though. It is historical, though. Some people just restore cars...you've done an entire building. :)

My weekend score thanks to Facebook marketplace. I came across this old price sign with a stand for cheap about 20 miles away. I was mainly interested in it for the stand, but after I got there to look at it I realized there were more numbers underneath. Turns out I will be able to have 26 cents on one side and 29 on the other which is the same prices I have on my other sign. Just another thing added to my waiting for restoration list.





Only 3 items short of having the full mid-fifties Sinclair product line



My old beater 63 wagon out in front of the station.



I came across this pic of the dealership I used to work in that I thought some on here would enjoy seeing. Denney Motor Sales was 3rd generation family owned GM dealer that opened in the mid 30's and operated as a Gm dealer up until GM yanked their franchise as part of the bailout. In the early 70s a new dealership building was built a half block north of this building, At that point the body shop moved into this building. I worked in this building for close to 8 years as a body man. I always loved the history of that building.

I was worried that after the building restoration was done this thread would die off. I am happy to see that you're finding interesting things to add to the thread. I can't wait to see some restore pics of that price sign. That's a neat piece of auto history.

WOW!! your attention to detail is second to none. It has taken me a while to get through this entire thread, but it was well worth it! you have inspired me in quite a few ways. I hope to take a motorcycle trip to see this amazing transformation. (hopefully there is a few nice days left this year, or it may be next spring) Also, there is a small old service station in the town I live in that an older gentleman still does a small amount of work at, and I have done a little research, in 2004 there were still gas pumps outside, but they havent been there in a few years, but the petro stop sign is still there. I will have to stop by and put a bug in his ear about being interested in purchasing it, if it would ever end up for sale. I hope that someday I can transform this little station here into something similar. Now for the pictures, and then I'm off to read your home shop build.

Very cool to see that old station still being used. It looks like an old Pure Oil or Phillips station by the architecture. The round sign leans me more toward Pure Oil since they were bought out by Union 76. What part of Iowa you from?

From the research i have found, it was a Union 76 station, the building was built in 1940. I live in DeWitt, IA. which is about 20 minutes north of the quad cities, near the IL border.

Yes there is, when I get home I can look at the receipts and tell how much. I don't remember exactly what it was off the top of my head. I will also add that the Iowa store does not stock lifts. They have weekly deliveries come from the Indy store, so when you place an order it maybe a few days before it will be available to pick up.

The post war American branding machine truly does intrigue me. This is a Sinclair comic book touting the innovation of the RD-119 rust preventive additive in Sinclair fuel.






A 1954 Goodyear ad I added to the office display



I also rearranged the office a bit for some additional room and made it better to view whats in the display case from the outside.






Had another young lady doing her senior pics at the station with a 64 Plymouth convertible. They spent a good 45 mins out there taking pics.

Comic book is very cool. :thumbup: Great marketing tool.

Of course, all the major oil companies, of which Sinclair was one, had their own research and development and each one did have proprietary additives for their gasolines and oils. The proprietary products are not just hype but are based on research.

Moving the counter in the office to then new position looks great and I'll bet it does give a good view through the windows. That '53 Ford is beautiful. If it had to have an engine swap I'm glad it stayed all Ford. Nice addition to your collection.

It's funny to me how much under hood space is taken up by the heater motor & squirrel cage, same with most cars of that era.

What are your paint plans for it?

Bought it for a driver. I'll give the body a quick once over and a fresh coat of Hot Rod black with a teal top. Both in satin finish. Just a dirty ol' hot rod, nothing special.

Thanks, I do appreciate everyone that sends me leads. This one unfortunately is the smaller one. I just found out a guy about 10 miles from me sold a bigger one about a month and a half ago :mad: He sent me this pic of both the 4ft and 6ft ones together. He was trying to sell me the little guy, thats how I found out he did have the bigger one.

Just old school lace and flake. I think I'll probably black out the billet gauge cluster. It's too street rod for my liking.

I thought it was but couldn't tell from the other photo. I have been contemplating a lace and flake job. I whole heartedly agree on the cluster.

Painting that billet panel will help a lot, but I wonder how much work it would be to just put a stock '53 gauge cluster back in. They were so much better looking.

did the guy say how much he got out of the big dino? Just wondering what the going price is. I've seen the repo small dino's go around $1000. to $1200., but that was a few years ago.
