American Locomotive; what kind of professional goes to a job in the middle of no where with only one drill and no backup?[/QUOTE said:
I'd say most contractors don't drive around with doubles of every tool on their truck.. don't know about you, but companies Ive worked for, nobody carried a "spare" cordless drill.. it's a different story if you're showing up with a "crew" of people, and you drive out there to supply 4 or 5 guys with tools, but going somewhere with one or two people, I sincerely doubt it. It's hard enough to keep a mobile outfit organized, and try to fit all the different things you need attempting to prepare for the unforeseen. Having doubles of power tools isn't really an event most people focus on when it's something that may not happen in years, and usually there's some kinda warning before they just break. Power tools aren't really thought of as a consumable item you plan on running out of ahead of time.

Today was the first time I watched either Ave or RTR. These are my thoughts'

I learned that the Hercules "might" be a decent diy type drill. But the tests are a little skewed for the other 2 brands. If you are drilling a lot of smaller holes you should have 2 batteries anyways. For large hole saws you need large batteries and you don't use compact drills. For long auger bits, you need a drill with a handle, to pull the auger back out.

For me watching the 2 unrelated to this thread, AVE videos was difficult. It was too much like watching real life and i didn't learn much.

The jist of the video was, Well lets see here today were gonna make a metal stand. I'll just grab some scrap metal. Lets see weel measure once and cuter twice. Awe sheet the fricken breaker blew for the chop saw. Then weel fire up the old buzzbox. It works better than them new fangled wire welders. Gonna have to grab some of them there rods from the beer fridge cause I was a dumbfook and left the fricken rods ought in the rain the last time.

I am sure he is a smart man, but too much shtick for me

They all made in the same country with the same stuff by the same people.

Probably they are all made in the same factory.

In my mind the Hercules, with only 1 battery, when the others have 2, is not really a better deal, just a different deal.

Would I buy one? I would only buy a drill as part of a package with other tools. For that reason the other brands still beat Harbor Freight.

This is incorrect, we have as much redundancy as possible in our box. Maybe not a perfect set of doubles for every tool but there's almost always something else that can do the job of another in a pinch. A successful company with tons of work in the pipeline owes it to the client and to themselves to make sure there is never downtime. Few things are more expensive than downtime, buying an extra drill is nothing next to four hours of billable time lost. We have an extra truck at the office and two extra old-model Total Stations because the work can't stop.

This.

Many small and one-owner companies don't make it through the hard times, because they're too concerned about losing one drill/driver to theft, then getting the job done on time.

I know general contractors (more than one) who have gone from one over-due job to the next and slosh money from new contracts to finish old (finish them late). They can keep it up while a building boom keeps rolling. Then when the work dries up they go bankrupt because they can't finish (and get payed for) their last job. Then they blame their crew for stealing a piece of plywood or a drill/driver for their woes. If they had ponied up more tool money up front and finished their jobs on time, they'd have that last big paycheck to carry them through when the jobs dried up.

If you watch more of his videos, you will find out it's not really Schtick - I honestly think it's who he is.

If you can get over the language he uses, and watch a few of his videos, you will find the guy is pretty amazing. Watching his stuff is a garage nerd's version of watching a three hour football game waiting for one guy to make a one handed catch while jumping over three other guys - or else crash and burn.

That moment will come sooner or later - he will build some electronic, or mechanical test rig to try out something totally new. He will invent a new type of CNC machine. He will show you how something you never even thought of, works. Or he'll fail miserably, and he puts that on camera too.

Then he'll jump into speaking another language and you can't even figure out what he's doing.

I will admit to being hooked on it for a year or so.
