whats the going rate on a box like this

Out here in the South it would be up on CL for $100+ and be sold with a few days. The red/grey is a rare find out here. I've had to travel two to three states away from where I live, South Carolina, to pick those up.

Like others have said, all depends on what side of the map you live on.

A quick trip to Junkstock in Omaha netted me this Blackhawk beauty that came from a Oliver Tractor mechanic. Casters were replaced by the person who won it at an auction in Iowa.

You make me sick! And here I am with 4 Blackhawk chests, all but one lonely for rollers........

Damn nice score

Hi all, this is my first time trying to post a picture on this forum. Hope it works. Can anyone identify this tool box? We have had it for a long time and brought it over from Canada. If the picture works I’llpost some more. Thanks.

Glen: can you post up a few more pictures with the cover off too? BEECH made a lot of boxes up in Canada so that might be one option, but until we see the handles, drawer config and the slides these all look somewhat the same.

cheers

Hi all, here is a picture of one of the slides and a drawer handle and the front door handle. You can just make out where there used to be an emblem. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi all, thanks for your answers. So it was probably made by Beach for Craftsman, right? What emblem should I look for because it is missing it? Thanks again guys.

That box is definitely a 6-drawer crown top Craftsman made by Beach Industries. I have the same one in my Grandfather's garage at my Mom's place.

Thanks for your reply VR6ix. There doesn't seem to be any grey paint under the red paint. And you are right, somebody did paint it. Me, when I was about 14! I hope to do a better job this time!! Thanks again.

Not saying they don't exist, but I have yet to see a Beach made Craftsman in the traditional Craftsman gray and red combo. Craftsman boxes are a lot less common in Canada than in the USA. Every store in the day sold their version of the same Beach box's (Canadian Tire, Eaton's, Sears,...) and thus these are quite common. Sears' Craftsman are easier to distinguish though, as they are the only ones I've seen so far with the "bar" style pulls. The handles on the other Beach made boxes are the same style as the one on your drop down cover.

Hi all. Just one last question. (For now anyways). Is there supposed to be a manufacturer's date or model number anywhere on my box? Thanks

Unfortunately I have yet to find any manufacturer's date or model number on any of my Beach's.

FJ: Cool box and cool PATINA. i'm guessing you are going to do a full restore on it like you did that Snappy a few years ago or are you just going to clean it up? either way i know it found the right guy. WELL DONE!!

No. I don't believe I would mess with this and keep the patina. Kinda like you I hunt for the unusual and when I saw this I knew I "needed" it.

Trying to find to lockdown the time frame Blackhawk was making this box. And thanks.

Hi all, thanks timbicta for your explanation. So if I understood correctly, my toolbox was made by Beach in Canada for Craftsman and then sold by Sears, Eaton, Canadian tire etc. We have had this box for as long as I can remember and I am trying to restore it. By any chance,do you know where can I find an emblem for this box because it is missing? Thanks again.

Glen: my best guess to find emblems would be from another toolbox, machine or something that lost it's use long ago, but the emblem is still ok. or some shop on Ebay or like auctions.

good luck

Picked this up off of Craigslist in my travels today. Anybody got any leads on a manufacturer?

I thought it was a middle box with some plywood cut to fit as a work surface. When I got there, I found out it is a top box with the lid and cover removed.

No clue how the plywood is attached, as I can't find a fastener anywhere. It's sitting on top of the dividers in the top till area, but I can't lift it out, at least not until I get home to my tools and apply some gentle persuasion.

Thanks drives. I have never seen another tool box like it here in Malta, so finding an emblem from another box is highly unlikely. Ebay and other auction sites are probably my best hope. Does this emblem have a particular name so that I will know what to look for? Thanks again guys.

Tynee, your box is a Kennedy that someone repaired.

Thanks. Got any pics of similar? Is that label above the one pull handle an old Kennedy label?

To me, it bears a strong resemblance to this Hout, but I can't find any other pics of this for further comparison:

Glen: i heard mention that your box is or could be a Craftsman Crowntop or Crown Top or just crown. here's an ebay link with an old hand carry toolbox with the label.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Very-Rusty-...562639?hash=item3f780572cf:g:PdoAAOSwXYtYzpwW

if I was more ORGANIZED i'd probably be able to find one for you on an old table saw or toolbox, but i need to GET ORGANIZED.

or maybe somebody else has a better idea for you.

I know you have family history in your old box so best of luck in the restoration.

cheers

FJ: like i mentioned the PATINA on that old box is nice and again nice find. Twertsy or somebody else might have a closer idea, but i'm guessing late 30's or 40's for age.

Thanks drives. At least I know what to look for now. I have stripped the paint and sprayed primer and undercoat on 4 of the drawers. When I finish the other 2 drawers I will take the box for soda blasting and painting. Thanks again.

That label is a Kennedy label. While it looks similar to the Huot, I'm fairly certain it is a Kennedy from 60-70's. Red wasn't as popular as the brown finish, but it was out there. If you look back in this thread you'll see examples of your box.

Here is a link to an example.

I think you're right. I ran across that same photo the other night, but hadn't' gotten around to posting it here.

Thanks for the input.

Pick this Duplex up the other night for 25. The welding job is horrible but it works. It's missing the lower door and its been beat on but good enough to use. I do have the handle that is missing on the bottom drawer.

Probably the oldest Duplex I've seen in awhile. Nice find.

Came across this old SK just as I was about to leave my local flea market. I have been looking for some time for one of these and have never seen one in the wild. I gladly paid the $20 asking price for it.

Picked up this late 1950s(according to rep from Kennedy Manufacturing) rolling set up. The original brochure was stuck under the bottom drawer.

Unsure as to what I will do with it. My brother needs a toolbox, so I may give it to him.

It’s a little nicer than the pics show. It was very grimey and has some paint loss but it’s very straight. I got it to clean up a little.

Here's my Snap-On KR 537/557 combo that my father gave me a few years back. Even have the original keys for the locks. Could probably use a minor clean and re-lube at some point.

Finally got ahold of a reasonably priced SnapOn box this weekend.
Cantilever style box with a dropdown front, 2 drawers, and a carry tote. $20 :rocker:
Someone had the midas touch with the gold spray paint, but the original gray is underneath.
I'll go at it with some acetone and the 0000 steel wool and try to get rid of the gold paint.

Scored this for $30 today. From what I gathered, this logo is 1950-1964?
LOVE the ridged drawer pulls. Amazing attention to detail back in the day!
You can see the logo was obstructed, but it wasn't paint - just some tape - so made light work revealing it.

EDIT - cleaned up the logo (turned out really well) - and found a cool "Advertising Metal Display Co, Chicago, USA" stamp on the back of the logo, inside the drawer. What is this all about?

Nice roller, and $30 is a great price. Nice find.

I was able to spend some time trying to get the gold paint off the SnapOn carry box I posted up thread. It's taking quite a bit of elbow grease, but the gold is coming off to reveal the original grey finish. Still a long way to go, the interior and all the drawers were painted gold as well...

Also found the Stanley sweetheart logo behind the hasp. Pretty cool.

Great box, Greg!

The "Heritage" logo was introduced at least as early as 1948 but that style box was made by Advertising Metal Display Company for Sears beginning sometime in the early 50s. At some point, AMD started embossing their logo, along with a 2-digit year of manufacture, on the bottom drawer. If your box has the embossing, it will be hidden by the Craftsman badge. Earlier boxes do not have the embossing.

Simply open the drawer and looking on the inside, opposite of the Craftsman badge.

Brian - super cool info!! Thank you!! I edited and posted a pic of my AMD embossing in the original post, but it doesn’t appear to have a digit?

I don't see the year either. The spacing of the letters on your box appears a little different than mine. Perhaps yours was an earlier version, and didn't include the year, or maybe the holes that were punched for the rivets destroyed the year? There's still a lot to learn about these!

I've got 5 heritage boxes and all have dates - except the one with the handles like yours. They were the earliest handle design (straight lines). The later boxes all have the diamond like design on the center of the handle and they have dates - I can verify as the crown boxes also have the diamond handle design and have the dates. I just don't know what year the handles switched as they probably had carryover of materials for at least a portion of a year.
