I am envious of your scissor lift and helpers.
The lift goes back on Wednesday. I will miss it, but it was well worth the rental fee. The helpers: priceless!
.
That's great that you had so many helpers! It's sure coming along now, how many more trusses to you need to get up? The redesign for the window looks really good, too.
Thanks, C_F. I have five in place, so I have another nine to go. I'm going out of town with SWMBO next weekend, so it may be two weeks before I get back to it.

BB - it just hit me that I have a few sections of pipe staging in my garage if you need to borrow them to work on the trusses.

Sweet--thanks, Jake. I'll keep that in mind. How high does your staging go? I will eventually need a brace/platform down the middle of the garage that is 13 feet in the air. I was going to build one from my scavenged lumber pile, but staging is a great alternative.

Today the new driveway goes in! I had the company come out last Friday and do a bit of regrading to remove a low spot in front of SWMBO's garage stall (water was puddling there after a rain storm) and to make sure the driveway will slope and drain properly.

I used Lazaro Paving, one of the larger paving companies in the area. I would have preferred to use one of the smaller local companies in my town outside of Boston, but was quoted a 25% higher cost.

The crew showed up before sunrise this morning and had the entire first layer down before 8AM! I was remarking on the speed to Derek, the crew foreman, and he said "Yeah we've got six driveways to do today." Amazing!

Here's a few shots of the work of the first stage.

Man that looks nice. Sure like to lay some rubber on that.
I bet that will make your taxes go UP!

Most of it was previously paved. Only the section between the new garage and the old were gravel. The new garage...THAT will probably make the taxes go up!

Wow, look at all that beautiful new blacktop! I'm curious, did you leave your three garage doors up in case they splashed any asphalt on them?

C_F: That's a variation on what I thought--that it was a liability issue for damage to the garage doors by the equipment. However, it's probably just as much a pain to clean off the doors if things get out of hand.

More driveway pictures. I'm really pleased with how it came out. The asphalt layers are nice and thick. I'll probably wait until the spring to backfill along the edges when I redo the rest of the yard.9a1901a8425bd293fda23f80e4e18298.jpg4f3a164b86dee1f29a19fdbc73f954b1.jpg3d9e93d6f34605f76602761be64ce045.jpg6f99978f5bbaa79c4487aa34bf0c912f.jpga7e3128311291a18859af5d06a69c13a.jpgcce25306fcc1888557f1ae0cad62d837.jpg1ebd13221801fb404719bf78924659bb.jpg

Here's the most important view--the one SWMBO will have as she walks from the house to her garage bay in the winter. It was this sloppy gravel walk that kicked off all of the recent garage and driveway work!

Whew! I really have to thank my buddy Mike for coming over to help me move the trusses around. More on that in a bit.

I started out planning my day as if it was going to be only me, so I dipped into my salvaged lumber pile and finally found a use for the big 16-foot long 2x10. I built a platform right down the middle to help me manage the trusses as I picked them off the stack one at a time. I propped it up with some 14-foot 2x6s out of the same salvage pile and braced it with scrap 2x12s the concrete guys left behind. It was pretty solid, easily supporting my weight.

I put up a sheet of the Zip paneling between the garage doors and assembled a brace to catch and hold the gable truss. Mike stopped by about this time and we slid the first truss across the platform and lifted it into place with the skyhook. Then, we had to cut the notches for the lookouts at the tops of the ladder with Sawzalls. The gable truss was barely braced, so it was...sporty, but we got it done.

We spent a lot of time talking about the appropriate gable spacing and how we could be sure to meet the already-positioned trusses with the right spacing. We measured forward from those trusses and marked where we needed the trusses to be, calculated and trimmed the lookouts accordingly and proceded to march our way back, one truss at a time.

We finished up in the twilight, with the help of another friend, Joey. We got all of the trusses into position, following the marks we had laid out earlier, but danged if the final gap wasn't smaller than it was supposed to be by an inch or two. Don't know what we did wrong, but we weren't gonna tear it all off and do it again! We trimmed the blocking by whatever was required and got it done. I'll just have to watch my intervals with the roof sheathing tomorrow.

Really felt good to get the trusses all up and placed after staring at them for two weeks. I'll finish bracing them laterally and diagonally, and will get started on the roof sheathing. Woot!

What do you mean the spacing was off? Did you measure 24" off the last truss repeatedly or did mark your 24" marks off the one tape measure? Does it make sense what I just asked?

Also, did you remember that your spacing from your gable ends are probably 3/4" less?

When we installed the first five trusses two weeks ago, we pre-cut all of the blocking spacers, but they were all 1/8" too long. And yes, I did forget to shorten the offset from the first gable truss by 3/4". However, we corrected the too-longer spacers and today we measured forward from last week's first regular truss and marked the side wall so that each of today's trusses would fall on 24-inch centers. I also remembered this time to cut the spacers from the second gable shorter, and the rest of the spacers were 22-1/2". Nevertheless, we were between 20" and 22" when we got to the last truss we placed today and the fifth truss we placed two weeks ago (it varied from wall to peak).

Again, I'm not overly concerned, just a little frustrated. The roof sheathing will still nail up okay, but I will have to trim some panels and maybe have a little more waste than I could have otherwise.

Today's work didn't look like a whole lot but it was a full day. I had two buddies who stopped by to pitch in and we got a lot done. All of the trusses are now tied into the walls with Simpson H10A hurricane clips. The trusses have about 90% of the cross bracing. We also got a start on the roof sheathing, getting about 60% down and taped on one side. I really want to keep going tomorrow, but work calls. Next weekend we're busy with other activities, so it may be another two weeks before I can get back to it. Patience...I'm saving about fifteen grand by doing it myself. :)001ddc781456c48b4b1fb08dd76cb459.jpg591fc4b8c4b6aa3d8cc24d0b4792925c.jpg71347c0d22b2ced63dd1a17f0c433f0f.jpg446f847083a189a0888947b2c58dc34b.jpg

Last weekend, I did no work on the project because I had a previously scheduled family event: Parent's Weekend at my youngest's college. He's doing very well as a freshman at Rensselaer Poly, and being on scholarship, is part of the reason I have the resources to build another garage.

So, I snuck away from work early on Friday and put in a few evenings this week to get the roof finished & taped, and I made progress on the wall sheathing. The walls have been rained on several times, and I was eager to get everything under roof.

As advertised, the Zip panels will absorb water along the edges and swell a bit if not taped. So far, I don't see anything that needs to be replaced or that will be a problem for the siding later. However, I do recommend following instructions and taping the joints as soon as you get the sheathing installed.

This weekend is taken up with a visit to my parents to help ready their place for winter. My next big push will be Veterans Day weekend.

That's gotta be a great feeling to have the rest of the roof Zip panels installed, it looks nice!

Also, I was looking at the photos of your great looking driveway again today & it dawned on me that you have two entrance/exits, with a big U-turn in front of the house. I don't know why I didn't notice that before, now I like your driveway even more! :D

You betcha, on both observations. The roof will now better shield all of the wall sheathing I still need to finish. It also allows me to start leaving some construction tools in the building rather than carrying it all back to the other garage every night. As for the driveway, having two entrances has been a major boon over the last several years with all of the comings and goings of two teenagers, several major snow storms and assorted deliveries. The only down side has been the occasional jackass who decides to use our driveway as a convenient rotary to reverse direction on the main road!

I've finished nearly all the framing on the new garage. I've got a few more nails to drive and seams to tape, but otherwise I'm ready for my framing inspection next week.70b5cded68d6dd7a2006b6b9d05b95a2.jpg06875bfc29030429a5edcce600bd53fb.jpg27eb9bad980ed4864575f3193da8a790.jpg

SWMBO and I made last night a date night, but instead of dinner-and-a-movie, it was Home-Depot-and-Five-Guys. We tried to pick out the siding color, but they had no samples other than white. So, we picked up a pallet of shingles and stuff for the soffits.

2b7fc21af0b8e894c9c67f38c6364873.jpg

Even though the Zip panel system does not require the use of tar paper, I thought it a cheap belt and suspenders insurance policy.

60489f0f8465fde452ddcdb23e7d3693.jpg

I also decided to work smarter, not harder and unloaded the shingles directly from the bed of the truck up the ladder to the roof. It worked.

60 pounds each times 33 bundles is nearly one ton I hoisted 15 feet higher in elevation... No wonder I felt tired!

Looks good. Keep it up.

What are you planning to use for soffits? Looks like vinyl in the truck, but not sure.

I'm going with vinyl soffit and aluminum fascia, if I can find it prefab. Otherwise, I'll either leave the fascia as white trim board or I'll rent a brake and make my own aluminum fascia.

SWMBO and I made last night a date night, but instead of dinner-and-a-movie, it was Home-Depot-and-Five-Guys.

I can't tell you how many Friday nights have been dinner and Lowes over the past two years. Way to many
I'm sure my wife's loves it, NOT!

She keeps asking me when we will be done with the renovations.

Tell her "shortly after you stop adding to the renovation Honey-Do list...."

I spent my spare time this weekend putting up fascia. Somehow, it adds significantly to the "finished look. Here are a few pictures at the halfway point.08383e398f0a7c2ea5dedeef6adb5ad8.jpgf7c92667e83eb72a0eef0c344f6f287b.jpg67b3bd3b2cad17864724a2bc080a74c5.jpg

I put up 2x6s behind the peak trim boards to give it some rigidity. I shaved 72-ft of boards down do that when I nail up the soffit, it will sit flush with the bottom of the fascia trim boards.

I have followed this thread since the beginning. You’ve done a very good job.
I hope all the outside trim Work is finished with aluminum and vinyl. You don’t won’t to be moving the ladder and painting every 5 years or so.

After all this work maybe you should have a date weekend with the SWMBO. Have her pick the spot.

You carried all the shingle bundles up the ladder? I’m tired just thinking about it. Did you place several on the end and then climb up to position along the ridge?

Hope the weather holds for the shingles.

Is there time for siding before it gets to be too cold?

Did you end up using a metal brake for the fascia?

I used primed boards for now. When I do the soffit, I'll clad the fascia in aluminum. I'm still hopeful I can buy pre-made. If not, I'll rent a brake.

Thanks a bunch, Captain14! See above re: aluminum. I agree with a no-maintenance exterior--that's what I'm shooting for.

As for the shingles, I threw a bundle up on my shoulder and left it there all the way up the ladder and then on up to the peak. I managed to get one side of the roof shingled--see the next post.

I have definitely been paying attention to SWMBO during this build and not making her a construction widow.

We'll have to see about siding. I have a heated garage where I can store the siding until I put it up. I might try it on the back wall of the garage to see if it will work.

My Zip roofing system was leaking in two spots, so I was eager to get shingles on it. The leaks were my fault--poor tape discipline when peeling back and re-sticking the tape when working on consecutive weekends. Unfortunately, the weather is turning cold and with the recommended temp for applying shingles being 40° F, I'm running out of time to get them on.

So when the weather warmed up and dried out on Tuesday, I left work early and climbed up on the roof with my floodlight and started laying bundles.

I snapped six vertical chalk lines and two initial horizontals and then new horizontals every three or four courses. I started at 5:00 pm and finished one side of the roof by 11:45 pm.

Hopefully, I'll find another warm day to get the other side done soon.3b01918f6f765a9a0bc27e7c89d259a7.jpgd632a3c16548666ec74d8ed13936f07b.jpg3f3605d14d3a50c709e134e028bec50c.jpge0d70df68b530ddc78f9b3fa6a8d369b.jpgb0853bb599bca50b669cc0715763453b.jpg
