It doesn't look like a prentiss nose cover on the spindle.

It looks like a 5" to me and looks like it had a nut welded on the base for the foot. Looks horrendous also lol

So my first refurbish job! Really happy with how it turned out. I'm gonna keep it for myself, but I could have grinder down some of the imperfections. Oh well, she has some character. Before and after pics!!

ALL: anybody want to guess what make and size this vise is? i think the back foot has been replaced with a thicker piece and really not a very good welding job or what do you all think? it's cheap enough i'd probably buy it for a parts vise, but i've been moving both my daughters this week and don't have time to stop by to see this. it also snowed here yesterday which was pretty strange cause it's barely getting below freezing yet.

Riv: i'm not a big fan of PARKERS and even less of a fan of the Union made Parker vises, but that said that vise you posted doesn't look like it's in great shape and the price is about double what i usually sell those for if i find one cause i don't keep those. if you need a big old vise just PM or email me and I should have something to trade or sell to you. if you want a big 6 inch 150 pound dirty Columbian for the price that guy is asking for his little 4 inch 65 pounder just ask.

That is looking an awful lot like the many Morgan vises I have at home. They as well only have markings on the opposite side of the one in the photo, and from what I can make out the Jaws look to be the same shape as Morgan as well, not to mention the Snout on the screw seems to match as well. I would guess 4.5" or 5"

Fantastic job as usual!

Now some posts back there was a short discussion as to what is more appropriate way to refer to a vise, pretty or Ruggedly Handsome. Now by extension as far as stands go, well in MHO, your straight stand and the Prentiss 20 on top of it are definitely "Ruggedly Handsome".

As for the curvy double pinstriped babe, well gosh darn it, I have to say it, it is just darn beautiful and dating myself, this is the Sharon Stone of stands and yes certain scene from the former has all these years permanently fused itself somewhere in my brain. I hope your stand does not do the same to my brain :lol_hitti

Drives is there any particular reason you don't like Parkers? Just the looks of em or is there a quality issue? The Parker that I have seems pretty top notch to me.

Riley: i was thinking a 5 inch Prentiss. what do you think about that back foot? broken and welded or just dirty cause it looks two times as thick?

Good eye on that foot in the back. Upon closer inspection, I can see that it's actually a nut that had been welded to the swivel base. Additionally, the three feet that are visible all appear to be equally spaced around the base at 90° increments, meaning there should be a 4th foot - which is not visible in the picture. Unfortunately, this one is damaged.

Brett: i think you might be correct on the Morgan guess and maybe i'll get a chance to see it in person or get a few more pictures if another local member doesn't pick it up first. thanks

Riley: yep that foot didn't quite look right.

AG: i'm guessing you are talking about the foot or swivel base and not the vise which looks fairly big and in pretty good shape?

BMR: Parker's are (were) well made vises that is for certain and probably more customized than any of the other vises made. my dislike for them is the customization of the jaws makes them very hard to repair if damaged and i see more damaged ones around here than pristine ones.

I have a few Parkers on my WANT LIST if i happen to find them in the WILD and if they are in great shape otherwise i just pass them on to other members or clients cause i prefer Rock Island, Reed, Athol/Starrett, Desmond Stephens, Prentiss swivel jaws, to name a few and even Record English made vises are above Parker and Columbian in my opinion.

in some parts of the USA Parker vises are (were) more plentiful and even the guys beating on them couldn't destroy them all. i've got a 130 pound Parker sitting around that has a busted dynamic and WTF did the user hit is with to break it i haven't a clue, but there were some ads in the early 1900's showing a user using a sledgehammer on a vise cause i think they were trying to get buyers to buy bench vises instead of blacksmith vises that were made to be hit some. if you like yours i'm happy for you and just thought you might want a better answer than JUST BECAUSE. OK?

Question for the vice stand owners/fabricators. If making a stand how do you determine the height of the stand so that the vice is at a suitable working height? I've got my hands on a big sprocket which I'll be fabricating a stand with so could do with some guidance.

You want it so the work you do the most is about elbow height. If the typical part is 3" above the jaws, and lets say it's mostly hacksaw or mini grinder work, factor that in. You don't want to be bent over, and don't want it too high...

Some have used a barber chair base for adjustability, but not sure how it locks rotation-ally, I've considered using a column from a RA saw that way, as well

Picked up this little guy for $15 today at a yard sale. Thought about painting it but kinda dig the look as it is.

Right, I can work with that  Just need to decide on the vice to use. Kinda want to put a Reed 206 on it but as that's a swivel base it sort of defeats the object of a stand. It'll need to be something pretty big and something I don't mind putting to use :headscrat

Well a friend always had a big Reed 106 vise on a re-purposed cast iron machinery base sitting in his backyard. I always like the idea of a big, wide, and heavy base for a vise, but I have never run into an equivalent.

Cast_iron_base_0.JPG
Cast_iron_base_2.JPG
Cast_iron_base_3.JPG

I heard he had sold the vise but still had the base. Upon further investigation the base came from a John Royle and Sons of NJ Photo-Engravers overarm router. The router + base weighed 1200 lbs. It looks from my calculations that the base is about 300 lbs. Perfect for a vise.

Cast_iron_base_6.JPG

So after a bit of negotiation is it mine. Sadly the bolt holes on the top of the adapter plate do not fit any vise I own. So in a perfect world I would like to remove the four 5/8 socket head cap screws and re-tap the top adapter plate. But since it was always sitting outside, the bolts probably have some rust in the threads and do not want to move. I have the tops of the cap screws soaking in Kroil, thou I suspect I may need to put the base on its side and apply kroil to the bolts theads protruding thru the top of the casting. Any further thoughts on how to get these cap screws removed?

Cast_iron_base_4.JPG

The base has some unknown flanges on two of the sides. I am tempted to machine a heavy cover plate with receiver hitch welded on so I can temporarily mount pipe vises and other tools. For anyone who has done this for vises, etc., it slop in the receiver hitch interface an issues? I suspect I could weld a nut on the side of the tube a use a bolt to clamp it in place.

That is a fantastic deal, even for a "little guy". I have a few vises I keep unpainted because I like the patina. Rub it down with some WD-40 and fine steel wool, and put it to use. Nice find!

Hit the socket head bolts and the threads you can get to with a torch. Heating and cooling often will break the rust bond.

Some hitches are tighter that others, I would do the nut and bolt cinch as a rocking vise when you are working is annoying as heck...

Picked up a bunch of vises yesterday, here's the first couple I got pics of. A little Athol No. 5 , 2-1/16" jaws, opens to 2-1/16", weighs about 3 lbs near as I can tell with a bathroom scale, so may not be that accurate on weight. Other is a Reed 103R which sadly was seized up and missing the split nut and the split nut locking screw. I thought someone may have broken the split nut trying to force the seized vise open, but now I'm not sure with the lock screw gone. Took about 5 minutes with a lead hammer and some Zep 45 to get the slide moving. Put a 3/8" fine set screw in the lock screw hole for now, makes the vise usable, but would obviously like to find a split nut and screw if anyone has one.

Amongst the others are my first Versa Vise, a large Parker, 4-1/2"-5" jaw with a steel slide and swivel base, and equally large Columbian swivel jaw swivel base. Will get some pics of these within a day or 2.

$300 is only about half of what it goes for. My prediction is $625.

Drives I see exactly where you're coming from on the Parkers. I really like the jaw design until it's time to work on them. Mine are in great shape, so I want to get them case hardened. I have some ideas on renewing the jaws, but I need to find one that I wouldn't mind smooth jaws on in case my theories don't pan out.

Finally got around to getting the base on this vise and cleaning up some of the rust. I kind of like the original paint so may just leave it as is. Need to build a handle for the swivel lock. I haven’t seen a 574x on here I am sure there are a few floating around.

Figured it's about time I posted some of the vises I found over the summer. In the photos, Studebaker Machine Co vise, Wilton 4" bullet, and craftsman vise.

A few more, Columbian 205-m2 and unfortunately I only took photos of the writing on the last 2! A Morgan 150 and a rock island 97, 6inch vise.

Nice pile of iron 1bad.---I want one of those Studebakers myself, but you just don see them to often.---Actually I would like to procure all the vises with car names, I already have a couple of Dodge, a Mercury, a Cobra, and a Metro, but the Studebaker and the Bugatti is where I figure to hit a snag.

I believe you have past the point of no return in the vise vice.
