Nice pile of iron 1bad.---I want one of those Studebakers myself, but you just don see them to often.---Actually I would like to procure all the vises with car names, I already have a couple of Dodge, a Mercury, a Cobra, and a Metro, but the Studebaker and the Bugatti is where I figure to hit a snag.

I believe you have past the point of no return in the vise vice.

I don't think I'm quite their yet or so I hope lol. Some of these will be finding new homes sooner or later. Most likely I will keep the bullet and the 205 for myself.

I am joining the ranks of the vise enthusiasts!

Moving in to a new-to-me house and setting up my garage workbench, I could not bring myself to install a Harbor Freight vise.

Looked for a few weeks and found a Wilton that seemed affordable. Now to learn about these, take it apart for cleaning, repairs, and painting. Glad I found this group!

Figured it's about time I posted some of the vises I found over the summer. In the photos, Studebaker Machine Co vise, Wilton 4" bullet, and craftsman vise.

1badbird:

Like that Studebaker Machine Co vise.

How does it open/close the jaws?

Scott: if you might want to make a new handle for your new Wilton and a swivel pin handle there are several posts on the vise repair 101 thread in vintage tools section that mention that. or just ask and somebody here will help you. Royce just made a nice big handle for his big REED a few posts back and several ways to make one if you want to.

welcome to the group and you've got a solid user there.

Royce: as usual you make some AMAZING STANDS. do you sell them locally, on Ebay or just plan on keeping and using all of them. i still would like some day maybe build something similar to your double vise stand with all the rotating options.

Unruh: nice restoration on your little vise. also if you go in the fabrication section Royce has several threads on vise stands and other cool stuff he's made that are all worth looking at.

Bird: nice vises!!

Re: two more stands

Royce
Fantastic job as usual!

Now some posts back there was a short discussion as to what is more appropriate way to refer to a vise, pretty or Ruggedly Handsome. Now by extension as far as stands go, well in MHO, your straight stand and the Prentiss 20 on top of it are definitely "Ruggedly Handsome".

As for the curvy double pinstriped babe, well gosh darn it, I have to say it, it is just darn beautiful and dating myself, this is the Sharon Stone of stands and yes certain scene from the former has all these years permanently fused itself somewhere in my brain. I hope your stand does not do the same to my brain :lol_hitti
007

To get back on that subject:

I see where you're going with Sharon Stone (a dirty vise stand?), but I'm one for the classics. The Maureen O'Hara of vise stands, if you will. Or the ones that get better with age, like Diane Lane. So, a small vise stand would be a Sally Field?

I'm done. I think it's time to de-grease my Reed.

While in A US government machine shop I walked by a Columbian 306-ma? It looked like it had bronze jaws. Pretty neat vise, but no photos because of government policy.

Thank you. Yes, it need a new handle and I noticed new ones are available from Wilton for like $160 !! The bolts and lock-downs for the swivel don't seem too bad at around $14.
First I just need to get it correctly disassembled and cleaned up for evaluation.

KMScott has a website where he sells replacement Wilton parts. I'm sure far better quality as well. Wiltonviseparts.net

Scott: if you don't think you have the time or materials to make a new handle and you'd like a better one there are several ways to make one quickly so just ask on the vise repair 101 thread and we'll help you. that post of Royce's new handle on his big REED is actually on the 101 thread and he tells you how he made his.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252830

or i think one of the members can provide one easily as nice as Wilton's for maybe a third of what a new one costs. the little swivel handle is even easier to make or just use a screwdriver on the rare occasion you might need to use the swivel option.

good luck

Taum: he's the first one to want to help members make stuff for their vises in case you didn't know. I probably should have said a third of what WILTON sells a new handle for ($160) cause i think KM's prices are probably pretty fair, but i haven't needed anything for a while to know for sure.

also there are other members here that like to do that sort of thing to help members too and I would if i had the skills and time.

VA: thanks for taking the time to watch the video i posted a link for cause I think it has some good messages in it and he's a great speaker i'd never heard of until a friend sent me the link.

Drive, my apologies. Actually I miss read that. I read it as “ I don’t think you have” verse “if you don’t think you have”....

LOL they are probably both right....I don't have any machinist-type equipment to make a handle, other than taking a rod and hacksaw it size, not what I am looking for. I am pretty sure I will buy one, just haven't looked enough to see where.

Drives, I agree that is a very useful and a beauty of a vise stand. However, my favorite stand by Royce is the one that has a vintage fire hydrant with a plate along the top holding 5 or 6 vises. Unfortunately I don't have a pic at my disposal, pretty sure someone has it to post, it was spectacular!

ALL: speaking of cool stands a couple years ago i probably would have just driven to buy this, but i'm hesitating cause i don't NEED IT or have a good spot for it so thought i'd post a picture and see if any of you might want it more. it's not cheap, but might be negotiable. it has that COOL LOOK

Hey Versa Vise guys, my new to me VV came without the little screw adjuster that locks the vise to the base. I temporarily installed a 3/8" fine thread bolt, works fine. I found a pic of the screw, basically looks like a piece of threaded rod with a screwdriver slot in one end, and a slit thru the middle about halfway down on the other end. Is the long split to spread it apart a little for a self locking effect? Also, any chance somebody could hook me up with a decal? Never made a decal, and only have a monochrome laser printer.
TIA, Jim

I had posted pics of my first vise find (Rock Island 574) and rebuild a couple of years ago. I had lost the finished pics but recently found them on a CD I had put away.
Anyway here you go:

Thought I'd post a pic of the post vise stand I built a few years back. Ready for my dedicated blacksmith area I'll never get around to.

The pedestal is a 14" ductile water pipe filled with rebar and concrete. Studs embedded in the concrete for attachment of top and accessories.

Had the opportunity to tour the Jeffrey energy Center owned by Westar today. Three 800 mega-watt plants. First operating coal plant I have been in. AWESOME!

All the pics in higher resolution here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/46064258@N08/albums/72157688165003921

Walking the turbine/generator deck and saw the following. Never really understood how HUGE the big vises are - now I do!

Wilton C3
Yost 34C
Columbian 4-1/2

Everything was very clean - as expected - even for a coal plant that has been operating for 35 or more years!

MGM: is that you smiling around all those BIG VISES? thanks for the tour!!

LIS: i love your blacksmith vise stand and if you might want to post your even cooler ANVIL SHAPED OPJECT that is OK BY ME and i'm sure others will like it as much as i do. i'm also enjoying your humbleness in your posts of amazing stuff.

Bri: nice Rock Island and probably all the vise any of use need for about 95% of any of our jobs in the shop. nice spiffing up job too.

Fretters: if you like that Anvil shaped object or if you'd like to see his BIG BROTHER just wait until LIS posts his or go in the show your anvil thread in general garage section. i've got a little better price, but i don't think the Blacksmith vise is big enough for me to own it. plus i rarely need to IRON my clothes anymore.

Could use a few decals myself. I have a word file that I think is the right size to print, I just haven't bothered to buy decal paper to try. A fella on ebay wants about $12 per sticker. I hesitate for obvious reasons.

Yep - a fine day all around. Plant tours are a great way to spend the day. I did ask and was told they have a big machine shop and several smaller machine shops scattered around as well. Would have been an interesting tour - maybe another day.

Thank you. Will probably be starting on it in a week or so. It's at my new house, in my new garage...and I'm still at the old house til next week..:(

Yes, I will want a new handle. May need a new screw, depends on what I find when I dis-assemble. I know it has a sticky spot as you turn the handle, screw may be bent.
And yes, I will want new swivel lock-down bolts.

So here's my Wilton C-1 vise all buttoned up. I also posted this over on the vise restoration thread so sorry for the repost but I'm really proud of it! Can you tell it's mopar themed? Haha. Was a very fun project overall. Can't wait to get it mounted and put to use! Sorry about the weird photo sizing.

Thanks. Been lurking here for some time. Dunlap was free. Other two cost me $120 each.
Have a Chinese prograde 6 inch that is a POS. Had a Chinese Wilton 5 inch swivel/rotate combo that I gave to my son. The craftsman 5181 mentioned a few pages back is still listed on CL. I live about 20 miles from hazleton. May call this weekend to see if and why it’s still available.
