When you are scheduled to have a heater installed and you've been waiting 2+ weeks and made sure the site was perfect for the installers....

Then they show up only to figure out that they ordered the wrong vent. So pissed.

When you have to wait for a long time, you will don't like it, I feel the same. But sometimes we can not do any thing, there are priorities and we are not the first priority.

Yeah, it just that it was such a preventable mistake. They ordered a special order kit. Had they just checked the box when they received it it would be a non issue. I understand delays due to unforeseen conditions on the job and that is why I do everything I can to ensure there aren't any.

At any rate they said they will be doing something to make up for it.

As a mechanical contractor I barely have time to go home and get any rest this time of year, between new installs and no heat calls.
I usually don't take time to open freight til i get to the job either. Sorry for your delay but i'd call it a first world problem not something to take on any stress over

Heh, same thing just happened with my living room carpet. The guy came, gave me a quote, I agreed, he said he'd be back in a week. In the mean time, we moved all the furniture out, pulled out all the old carpet and generally had the house in disarray for that week. An hour before he's supposed to be there, he texts me and said his helper was sick and he's not coming. No apology, no reschedule, just he's not coming. And he never came, ever. I had to call somebody else.

I moved into an old house about 2 years ago. I needed the floors refinished before I moved in.

I lined up a contractor to do the work. I had to push out my closing date a month to accommodate this guy's schedule. Still, he kept pushing the date. Finally, 4 days before we were scheduled to move, he calls and cancels completely. He said something else came up and he's not available to do the work.

I had to move in, hire another contractor, rent pods, and move all my furniture into the pods so the second guy could do the work.

The second guy finishes all but 1 room, then disappears. He never shows up to finish the last room. I had to do it myself. Luckily, I only paid him for the work he completed.

Some of these guys really ****!

In my business travel, mainly between LA and Fairbanks, including BC & Alberta, calling on hvac/p&h distributors and contractors I always inquire on manpower issues. Universally, the answer is, “If I could find more qualified help I could do more.” I don’t think this is any different in any industry.

Same thing here Ordered and scheduled windows in September was busy until October. The Day before install day I take the day off work and removed interior jambs, trim and exterior siding. The morning of install day I took the day off again I get a call at 9:30 AM. The installer isn't going to make it... We reschedule for the day before halloween. Once again no show no call... I called up the place and said im picking up the windows and doing it myself... Just how I wanted to spend a weekend in November...

If it is any consequence, you likely did a much better job on the install.

Did any of you bother to sue the guys who did this to you, or are you letting them think this is normal?
Partial blame goes to those who accept unprofessional breach of contract.

Many people are self employed because they are too unreliable to keep a regular job.
Let's try to make them out of business or up to the job.

Seriously? If someone doesn't do what they say they will, I'm partially to blame? That makes no sense.

Is it my job to educate a 'professional' on how to properly run a business? I don't think so.

Most of the guys who do this kind of stuff, just don't care. They are looking for the highest payout. If a better job comes along, you go to the bottom of the list.

I've been to small claims court. Even if you get a judgement, good luck getting paid. The chances of getting anything substantial from someone who just didn't show up is pretty slim IMHO.

Your only real recourse is to slam them online and in person to get the word out to other future victims. I've been using Angie's List. I've had much better luck finding good people there. They have to be more accountable because there is constant feedback. The bottom feeders get identified very quickly.

If I'm being perfectly honest, I've had more bad contractors than good ones. I've hired at least 10 people over the last 2 years. Out of the 10, I'd probably call 3 of them back. In 2 cases I had to hire other people to come in and fix/finish things. I can't even count how many times I've been stood up for estimates. Nothing taking time off of work to meet a guy who never shows up.

There's a guy working at my house today. I contacted him in September. He was supposed to finish my job the first week of October. I have other work on hold until he finishes. I'd pretty much given up on ever seeing him. He literally showed up this morning out of the blue to start work. Would a simple phone call have killed this guy?

Do you also blame victims of ****** assault for the clothes they wear?

If i had time to chase eveyone that inconvenienced me, i'd have the time to do all the work myself

Well, based on that logic, it's not my fault either.

The real culprits here are the guys who got screwed before me. If they had done something, this poor, wayward contractor could have been saved. Hopefully it's not too late.

Well my HVAC guy did take full responsibility for the mistake. I did express my disappointment and he said he would make it right. He is giving me an additional discount ad the install will be next friday.
