You can buy a not-broken one off ebay in the $200 range.

Thanks for the heads up. If the starting bid is made and nobody over bids, it would be $175 to my door.
I would have to get the broken one almost free for it to make sense.

Rusty, nice 180 Prentiss! Just for reference, I've got a 185, 7" and it uses a #97 swivel base. Very possible a smaller Prentiss 90 Series would fit?

That 185 sounds like a brute.
Yeah a base from a 210 2 1/2 jaw would work. I’ve got another prentiss 180 along with a model 210 and they use all the same parts besides the castings of the moveable jaw and the stationary jaw. 6852d62a550e8c4ce94968174ece0120.jpg

Obtained this little vise over Thanksgiving. My Dad had it tucked under his bench in the garage - hasn't been used in years. According to him, it was his great-grandfather's and it's been passed down.

It took me awhile to find any markings on it, but I finally looked at the top rear of the slide and found the maker's mark: It's a Stanley. It has the Stanley logo with the box around it, along with the letters "SW" under the "STANLEY" lettering. It says "MADE IN USA, No. 763" under that. It has a 2" jaw width, and opens to about 2.75". Small and well made. It's in GREAT shape and has not been beaten up at all. Even the little anvil is in mint condition.

Unfortunately it's missing one of the jaw inserts. My Dad and I looked for it this morning, but to no avail. Wondering if I can get a set made through one of the guys here? Here it is:

Anyone have a similar Stanley vise? I'm thinking it has to be at least 70 years old. Doesn't have the city of manufacture imprinted on it...maybe New Britain, CT?

Dave
Thanksgiving plus a few years. Another 763, predates yours according to this thread http://swingleydev.com/ot/get/24114/thread/
Same inserts 2" removable, opens 2+3/4", weight just shy of 4lbs. Not nearly in as good shape as yours. Looks like the paint comes off this one.

Good morning All
Can one of the Reed aficionado please tell me if this Reed 104 is supposed to have a swivel base or not? I did a search online and all the Reed 104 variants that at least I found such as 104, 104B, 104R etc were stationary base but the base is the usual Reed rectangular base with 4 holes.

Where as this 104 has a round base which is usually is used when there is a swivel base. But then again it has two holes and if this 104 is a Reed vise with swivel base I would expect a single hole for the swivel bolt. I suppose someone could have drilled the second hole :willy_nil.

Now, as so many brands have used the 104,204,etc model designation, may be I am confusing the Reed with some other brand but wasn't 1 (eg 104) used for stationary base and 2 (eg 204) used for swivel base models?
Thx in advance

007: Those newer reed vises had a little s (swivel) or n (non swivel) in that little square box above the reed logo and yours should be a swivel I'm guessing but I'm not 100%. I don't own any Reed vices like that, but pretty sure that's maybe a 1970's vise and looks more lil Columbian made it for them.

Thanks for the info. This one is for sale and seller is claiming it is "Fixed base". Based on what your information, it would have been nice to see the letter in the little square box but the thick paint has obscured the letter.

For the older Reeds does the 1 (fixed base) and 2 (swivel base) designation old true?
Cheers

Hello gents,
I have an early Wilton 9450 I believe. Date stamp 7-945. Does any one know the value of this vise properly restored?

Google "Reed 104 vise ads" then images

Shows a Reed ad, hope it works

Get
Thanks for the Tip, using your tip I found images of both and N and S and also the ad.

Out of curiosity I still would like to know if for older models the swivel vs no swivel base was designated by 2 vs 1.
Cheers

Andrew
Welcome to GJ.

There are Wilton experts (such as G-ManBart, autopts) here that can give a lot more accurate estimate of the value and hopefully will see your post and respond.

Meanwhile my guesstimate (and I am no Wilton expert) based on what I have seen online (and not personal experience) depending on what shape the 9450 is in and how well it is restored and where you sell it (on ebay vs somewhere else), the value is likely to be in several hundred dollar range may be $300-$400.

Got my swivel base mounted. Found on eBay, sold by autopts who was very helpful in determining which base specifically fit the vise. Thanks for the quick replies.

Last pic is what looks to be an "R" cast into the side of the body. Not sure what it refers to.

Next project for now is to reinforce the bench leg on the right corner for a permanent home.

A lot easier with a few pics to get an idea. $3-$400 seems about right from all the cleaned up ones I've been looking at online.

Very nice looking vise. Yes, (autopts) is a great guy. Hes a very respected member in this vise forum/thread. He can get you oem Wilton parts at a pretty good price and sometimes cheaper if you deal with him directly. Once again, great looking vise:rocker:

can anyone tell me what brand vise this is?

It's one of those Lightning Vises, joe.striper recently got one ... the one you pictured is missing the swivel base. I posted the patent somewhere back in this thread.

EDIT: might not be missing the base but something does look a little funky there. Still probably wouldn't prevent me from getting it though!

Location makes a big difference in the value of the vises too big to fit into a flat rate box. And we gotta see pics. IMHO, $400 would only be hit if the jaws were as good as new and there were no big gouges and saw marks. Value is also diminished by lots of filling and grinding.

A very nice looking 500 model, half an inch wider but newer, recently sold on eBay for $357 plus shipping.

I thought it looked like a Lightning vise. It was for sale locally.

Here is a poor man's swivel arm which I made by cutting off the unthreaded section of a bolt and then tapping it, drilling a hole for the swivel arm and fashioning an arm from a piece of rod that I had on hand. The vise is only a Columbian D44 and was not worth getting a real swivel bolt/arm for it but I thought this simple swivel lock still beats just using a bolt and nut (as it is sometimes done when swivel lock is missing).

I haven't posted anything on this thread for some time. I decided I would stop actively seeking vises but if a good one fell in my lap I'd probably catch it. Today I got a very large bruise in my lap. The $30 price made the boo-boo feel all better.

Shiftless: That was nice of you to offer to drive all the way to Michigan to take it off my hands but I couldn't ask you to do that much driving. I'll just have to find something else to do with it.

A few days ago, my stepdad gave me an old Sears vise (made in U.S.A.) and I decided to let it be my first refinish/resto project.

I'd been watching several videos of what kind of stripping agent to use, and how many wire wheels I should have and what sizes, and what areas to mask off and where to apply lubrication.

I'm still not settled on whether I should paint the beam or just keep it oiled.

This will be a cool addition to my next bench.

I still need to get a small brush and detail the lettering and numbers in black.

Since this is my first reply on GJ, the little bit of reading I've done so far has shown there are many experienced people I plan on learning a lot from.

In the last few months, I have discovered that I like collecting vises, and will start looking for similar ones in this thread that I've found without manufacture markings. It should be fun.

Picked up this Desmond-Simplex 500 for $20 the other day and its in great shape and only missing one of the pipe jaw inserts and the cutter that goes in the hardy hole on the anvil. I almost never use either but you know it will bug me until I find one or make one to complete it.

It cleaned up right nice and I like the patina so I think I will not paint it. It will be put to good use in one of my shops.

CRS: That Reed 204.5 is maybe the perfect user vise for 98% of all GJ member's shops. Nice find and OMG you stole it.

007: Yep reed's numbering system was 100's for non swivel and 200's for swivel except for C series vises from about 1920-1950. Not sure exactly which year that reed changed to putting s & n and just using 100's numbers.

All: Welcome to all the new vise members and I still own the first vise I bought some 30 plus years ago that is a Zyliss cause its still in use, but it's been a while since I only owned a few.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!

Not sure what Donald is trying to accomplish here, but it fits the theme of Thanksgiving and Vises

Thanks for the note, I would love a couple more pic's and possibly the jaw width, and weight. I'll add you post and the info it to the spreadsheet in my signature. Thanks in advance Kevin.

Nice link you found GET.

I'm afraid the vise is missing the base so weight would be null and void, it's something I need to get around to making so at least it's functional. Jaw width is just shy of 2.5 inch.

I bought mine without a base also so I made this up. This is the only pick I can find at the moment the shaft was turned down and threaded so I can put it into any dog hole in my bench.
