Wow that is a nice one for bargain price of $80 for 96 lb vise with 5" jaws. To boot it is in great shape too ! congrats

I have a question regarding the pipe inserts. The static jaw has two pipe jaw inserts but from the photo it looks like there is only one dynamic jaw pipe insert but it might be by design set to sit half way between the two static inserts on the opposite side. Is this true or is the dynamic jaw supposed to have two pipe inserts?

007

Thanks 007!

You are correct. The static jaw has 2 pipe jaws and the dynamic jaw has one. The dynamic pipe jaw is offset to slide in between the two pipe jaws on the static jaw. The jaws have a lot of play but that is by design according to Yost so the jaws can settle into the pipe when you are clamping it down. They do this by wallering out the holes on the pipe jaws where the pin slides though. Kind of a neat design.

I found this vise at the Canton Tx Flea Market this weekend, it's a Craftsman 5196. It's pretty dirty but seems to be in perfect condition.

I saw it on a guys table and asked for a price thinking he was going to say something $200+. It took all my self-control to not smile when he said $45!!! I looked it over good and offered him $40 which he accepted. :rocker: :rocker:

This is my first vintage vise and I couldn't be happier. This thread was in my mind the entire time I was looking at it and checking it out. All of the information you guys share is simply invaluable and I knew just what to check for to see if it was still good. Thank you!

You guys are finding some great vises this week! ........

After buying 3 last weekend, I haven't purchased a single one since!

I actually got rid of 3 on Monday. A broken undermount woodworking vise, a broken pipe vise, and a fully operable pipe vise. I received in trade a J.H. Williams forged steel "superjustable" wrench. A real monster 24 inches long. A few minutes of quality time with a wire wheel, some scotchbrite, and a bit of black tinted BLO and it looked much better. Might come in handy for freeing up stuck vise parts.

Since good things come in threes, I'll show off my third vise this week!

It is a Hollands model #16 (6") stationary vise. That makes two 6" Hollands vises I purchased this year (The Model 26H was traded to another GJ member). I think I'm going to start mounting vises to the trunk lids of all my cars cause I don't know what to do with them! Oh, and I paid more than twice as much for this one ($125) as I did for my Model 26H ($60). I think I did all right ;)

Riley: with you and Ed buying up every old cool vise in your area that isn't or maybe is bolted down i rarely even look for a vise down there any more. NICE FIND and OMG how are you lifting all these heavy vises since you just had shoulder surgery not too long ago. WELL DONE and i love Holland's maybe cause they are a REED vise with a different name on their sides. do you have a scale or maybe you know how much it weighs cause you've been hauling so many of these around and is it about 140 to 150 pounds?

CD35: nice find on the 5196 and i'm guessing you will love it like i love mine. one thing that is a bit different on the sleeves of the 519x's is that they are threaded so if you are taking it apart i thought i'd mention that cause it surprised me the first time i took mine apart. WELL DONE even though i would have given the old guy the $5 too.

Hiatt: nice find in the DESERT!!

Joe: i have to agree that i'm not a fan of that Gold and i always like the quality of your work. those extra wide jaws are F'n ugly though so what's with that or did the buyer just want to say he had a 200 pound vise with 8 inch jaws?

I was going to cut them to size. The buyer wanted them left intact. I do as tgeyvrequest. I thought the gold was ugly too. oh well to each their own.

I bought a couple of Columbian vises from a guy that was selling stuff from a friend who had died. They were paint gold as were the small wood lathe, drill press, work bench legs, tool box, and more. It all looked like nothing was ever used.

The Golden rule of tools prohibits anyone from using a Gold tool for any task! (btw Silver ones are ok to use) . So now you are not allowed to use these Columbians either :)

A friend of mine near Seattle bought this on Thanksgiving day. A very clean and original Columbian 203-1/2. He works with larger, newer Wiltons at his job, and says this little guy is a great vise for his home use. He only plans to clean and lube it at present.

Found me a sweet little filers vise in western Ohio. I figured most of these were smooth jaws....

Nice vise Joe. What are your plans. Maybe find a stand for it.

Has anyone seen a one piece Parker Brake Shoe? Or better yet seen a broken one. It works but just a little skeptical if this was original on this 4" Parker I am making jaws for. The bore in the Base is very rough and not machined. I can see what looks like ejector pins in the first view of the brake casting. This might be a after market brake piece. The Static was not machined on the base but the jaws are worn so this vise has been used. Never know what comes through my doors. Re building three Parkers, two are for customers that need new jaws.

Kevin, I just took an early Parker apart last week, was surprised to find a 1 piece brake shoe as well. I think my base is machined, not rough cast, I'll double check. Mine is an early one that uses a slide handle lock bolt, not a Parker wrench. The lock bolt is threaded 1/2"-12, not 1/2"-13, was going to substitute a bolt and Parker wrench I have kicking around, but it's a no go.

Thanks 454, learn something everyday. 1/2:12 Wow I have seen Parker use 9/16:18 in the Handle spring plunger. This Parker swivel lock uses the handle too but the the threads were cut at a angle and it needs replacing. I did not check the pitch. If it is 1/2:12 then I'll have to make a new brake angled actuator and they are time consuming along with the lock down body. Parkers are great vises but remind me of working on a International Harvester.

My vise is a 249X, 4-1/4" jaws. Just noticed my brake is marked 249, yours looks like 88. Is the vise you have an 88? My base is very nicely machined, although in some areas it has significant rust. This vise is kind of a sad *******, looks like it sat in a shallow puddle for a long time, had a hell of a time getting the swivel apart. The static jaw insert is welded on, not sure why, looks like it was welded by someone who knew what they were doing, nice looking welds and perfect jaw alignment. Main saving grace is it is a steel slide model, and only cost $25.

On Edit - Kevin, do you mean the bore for the center bolt or the bore for the brake shoes? I thought you meant the brake shoe bore, but just realized you may have meant the center hole. Have to check the center hole on mine tomorrow.

No you are right the bore on the brake drum. Yours is machined and this 204 is rough, can not machine it because there is only so much movement in the solid brake pad. This one will take some work.

Master Scott
I have a 204 (pat. 1910, the later models- may be a year or two latter- have two piece pad as well as a wrench instead of swivel arm) and here is a photo of the one piece. It seems to work very well though even though it is one piece.

Thanks Gman, this vise was pulled from production before finishing all the machining, it's gonna take some time to finish but the customer is happy with my quote. As a note the swivel lockdown thread size is 5/8:10. Because the Static was not machined underneath the lockdown bode the threaded stud was bent, the shoulder bolt underneath the swivel base is 1/16 to long and 1/8 undersized at the bearing surface to alow this base to rotate. Another odd ball thread. This one is like yours with Pat November-10-1910.

I took apart and cleaned up my newly acquired Hollands Model 16 (6") vise. It has a few scars but is otherwise is in excellent condition. Sorry, I don't have a scale to weigh it, Kevin.

I clamped the dynamic in my 3" Athol for a sense of scale and for my own entertainment.

That anvil tree is pretty neat and what a nice collection. Still, I think the top must have been a little light and blown off. It needs about a #500 Soderfors on top to really set it off and hold it down. :)

GET: Wow that's some anvil.

in case you have a few minutes to post up those anvil pics on the SHOW YOUR ANVIL thread here's the link and i'm sure some of the guys over there that don't see it here will be equally amazed.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33788&highlight=show+anvil

Riley: so was it maybe 3 or 4 months ago you were saying you didn't own a 6 inch vise and how many do you own now? i love the little guy holding your new big Holland's.

in case you haven't seen Jeremy's bench he built for the Holland's 15 he bought from me many many years ago it might be a good one to build one similar for your new home. he found some cheap metal kitchen cabinets on CL and some 3x8's in an old barn and magically (with a ton of work) made this.

keep up the search and guessing your new home is almost needing a bigger garage as we speak the way you are finding these old gems.

I have acquired 4 this year, but traded away the Hollands 26H. When it rains, it pours, they say!

I loved reading Jeremy's thread - it was one of the first I followed here on GJ - but I don't think he ever finished - his workbench is too barren! Where are all the loose parts and misc tools? I need to meet the man since we live in the same city. Then I could judge for myself whether or not he properly finished off the workbench :)

As for setting up my new place, I already have enough cabinets. I will be removing wheels from a few of my vintage Craftsman rollers and building a tabletop that spans over them. The end result will be similar to Jeremy's shop but will have a gray & red Craftsman theme.

Riley: those pictures were taken years ago when he just finished the bench, but he's a designer for SAW STOP saw so maybe he doesn't have FSD (flat surface disease like i do) and the bench is still clean and ready to work.

I'm not sure if Jeremy is moving out of the country since Saw Stop was acquired by i think a company in Germany so you might want to PM him or get his information from me cause i'm sure he'd be happy to meet you if he has time to and is still around.

yep you've found enough toolboxes and vises to fill up at least one stall in your new garage this year so good luck with the move. your new workbench sounds like a vintage thread worthy design so hope to see lots of pictures of it in the making.
