qaz, you sent me a pm too.
Just read this thread.
Just read this thread.
My 4901 came today. Looks great. I oiled it up, added a whip hose and screwed on my old Snap-on Q/R bit holder. One or two short burst and the plastic threads on the holder disintegrated! I cannot get a bit inserted with the spring. Who makes a good Q/R model?
Yes, please be advised the 4901 and 4980 break things.
Literally 5 mins after getting our first QC sample of the 4980 years ago our testing jig was broken in half.
Try Ajax
Thanks. Is there a trick to using the spring?
Not sure what you mean, does it fit into it? The ones that come in the kit, right? Try putting the bit in the spring then threading it onto the tool.
Make sure you're trying the hammer against something solid. You can't "dry fire" air hammers in the air.
I understand about dry firing. Before I had the Q/R chuck, I could wiggle the bit under the retainer on my Snap-on PH50. I know I can insert the bit and the thread the spring on. Please look at the question I added regarding Ajax. Thanks.
Looks like 3300-U to me

Uses?.....besides riveting.

Technically speaking the stroke is slightly longer and the blows are more powerful.
Just keep in mind big blows vs a lot of blows (of an also powerful hammer) means the thing ur hammering is more likely to break as opposed to move. Also, our kit doesn't come with a quick-release chuck so factor that in as well.
But I'm not here to pretend the PH3050B is not a fantastic air hammer. I bought one with my own money years ago.

Air hammer...Air riveter.......any difference?
Uses?.....besides riveting.

why did u buy the 3050? was the 4901 not made at that time? which one would you say is stronger? gonna buy the 4901 soon maybe. no bias please mr astro pneumatic.
Intended for different industries, but essentially do the same thing. An air riveter will usually have a more variable "teasing" trigger and also more likely to have some built in shock suppression. Also usually more expensive.
I wasn't working at Astro at that time, and my opinion would most certainly be bias.
Ball joints, Bushings, mufflers to name a few.
Just found the 4901 for $94 and change, including shipping.
Is the trigger variable like a riveter?

Where did you find it for $94?
Bill,
The Astro 4901 air hammer does have a variable trigger, but the sensitivity of the trigger is not quite as smooth and easily variable as one on a high-end air riveter.
The 4901 is still an awesome air hammer.![]()
18-22% more joules/min, is different per blow if my records are to be trusted.
I have a snap on 3050b and its just too strong for .401 bits. It regularly breaks snapdown on and mayhew bits. Youre better off with a .498 gun. Last week I had a snap on hammer bit break below the chuck and it somehow damaged my 3050b. Luckily it was still under warranty.
so the astro 4901 will break bits as well?????
UPDATE:
So the 3rd party seller cancelled the transaction and put in a refund request that will take a few days to happen. He is saying it was lost in shipping but never gave a tracking number. Fishy stuff going on here.
In the old days, Amazon would fix these things by sending their own stock and price matching. It cost them too much, so they no longer do that.
I called them anyway. Went through the process of complaining to someone in the Philippines. Escalated it to a US rep when no satisfaction was forthcoming.
Ashley in GA did everything possible to help me. First, she had me order the last one available from Amazon with our prime account. Her supervisor put a $35 discount on the $210 price and then she did the same, but this also had a $8 tax. So $150 total. Minus the $95 that will be refunded it adds $55 to the price. But she will add another $25 tomorrow to our account that can be used on future purchases. So total ended up being $125. Still a deal. And we'll get it quick. PS, she is reporting the seller.

If its anywhere close to the 3050b expect to replace a bit after about 10 minutes of operating time.
This is a very informative post. What I would like to know is if other manufacturers post in other forums. Astro is here, but what about other brands, like, Ingersoll Rand, Chicago Pneumatic's,Snap On, just to name a few..I have not seen any other brands that put in the extra mile. This is good to see.Ken
