Yup. Except it doesn't work like that this year from what I'm told. You get a partial refund making your "free" tool no longer free...but discounted.

HD has been doing partial refunds like this for "free" items since 2007. Prior to about 2005, the only discount available was 10% off and that was only for employees and only at Christmas.

Not true at my hd's. A big alert pops up on the screen and won't allow you to checkout.

Do you think they changed the system for your store but not all the others? You could be right, but I am very, very skeptical. If they were going to do this, it would start here in Atlanta where most IT pilots happen.

Talking about changing the system... One store near me has new SCO computers. They look like large monitors running windows or something. No price check button anymore. I had to ask for a price check and the worker had to hit like 5 buttons to get me the price.

My store had 2 16' Milawaukee tape in a package together on clearance for 3.29 marked down from 12.99

It should be years before I have to buy another 16' tape

You can still get to the price check pretty easily on these computers. They've been implemented at most HD's near me. If memory serves, you just hit the esc. key and it will bring you to a screen with multiple programs shown. The price check program should be available on/near the top row. I just found an unused computer near the garden section and played around until I found the price check.

from the sound of that, they are telling you that they are going to pro-rate your refund if you dont return everything, just like the receipt outlines . . . .

Right. I did not experience this in the past 2 years I participated in this deal. Who knows?!

The HD's in my area don't give refunds period past 90 days. Quite unlike when HD expanded rapidly, around 25 years ago, when refunds were permitted darn near indefinitely with a receipt.

I save ALL receipts (some dating back 50 years), and when my wife brought back a few never used still new in package items to HD, with my receipts, and with the credit card I purchased them on both in hand, the clerks IGNORED the receipts because they were older than 90 days (but newer than 1 year). It was as if I didn't have any receipt at all. It was the same as if I had grabbed anything in the store and walked up to the return desk with no receipt and requested a refund. It was as if I could have bought the items at Walmart, at a flea market, off of eBay, or at Lowe's for crying outloud, and brought them to Home Depot for a refund without a receipt. My real Home Depot receipt, clearly legible, not faded because I keep them in a file folder by project and year, and these were this year.... didn't count for squat.

Instead, I received store credit, on an orange card. Which later, when I went to purchase something with that credit, was denied... because my wife actually handled the returns for me. Good luck getting your refunds.

it would start here in Atlanta where most IT pilots happen.

Curious why you would think IT pilots happen in Atlanta? Curiously Columbus Ohio is the most common test market, there are a couple of others, never heard of IT rolling out first in Atlanta, and certainly not the HD practice.

That's the same everywhere. As it's a corporation, and it's their corporate policy. One that is posted in all stores to view before you buy. Also on your receipt. Have you bothered to read it in the last 10 years?

They will take care of Husky warranties for you, but why do you think the should take something back from 20 years ago? I would love to have built my house back then with all HD items. I could be taking the house apart now, and getting all updated fixtures or just starting over. :lol_hitti

May be different in your stores. The stores in at lease several areas, based on comments in this thread and personal experience, do flag penny DNI items. Maybe you are only buying legitimate penny clearance items?

After a recent conversation with an HD employee that I thought was wrong, and other comments read here, I believe their are 2 categories of penny items. One is supposed to go back to the vendor for credit, the other HD gets credit for it from the Vendor but takes care of it some other way. Maybe that plays a role, I really don't know. I've had the fortune of 1 item that low, and only the lady watching the SCO screen slowed me checking out. Actually voided the item, and made me re-ring it thinking I scanned the wrong UPC. That did seem fair.

as too test pilots, they are going to use more than one city as they are usually going to be testing different things at the same time.

Most HD IT pilots are here as their HQ is here. Anybody seen the electronic shelf labels? Started here, Kennesaw store. The big monitor "SCO". Here, Merchants Walk. The Amerigas propane vending machine? Here, Cumberland store.

I am not sure what HD's internal SCO deployment strategy is. I'm not trying to prove you wrong, just describing my experience at my area HD's.

Probably a little difficult for him to imagine that big building at Paces Ferry has folks in it that might not want to go to Columbus, OH to see test results....

i have a hard time imagining that the HQ people at HD even travel within the atlanta area to see test results.

i even have a hard time imagining them listening to a status report that takes more than 90 seconds. . . . . . let alone reading a report including details . . .

Hmm, well I've never been stopped for a penny item? and im not talking stupid bath faucets, i'm talking $300+ tools. plus the guys that actually get them have been prevented from posting for over a year!

Whos preventing who from posting them? Alot of folks post penny items. Something fishy in Denmark as usual.

My home Depot has the vision kama do grills on clearance for $299. I wish I had the money but can't do it right now.

Went to HD to get some brackets I needed. The matching mirrors to the penny vanities I got a week or two ago finally went penny too! Got the three...

Some shepherd hooks for hanging plants / feeders / chimes / whatever are at .03 pricing (75% off), look like decent quality but I really didn't need any.

Also noticed a lot of the smaller bags of organic fertilizer for plants / veggies were marked down considerably.

Various grills were marked down $100 from original price... I'm holding out for a Weber Natural Gas model though... There was a nice kitchen aid for $200 but it just didn't look at heavy duty as a weber...

Found a bunch of US Wire 12/3 orange extension cords, with lighted end at my local HD. Sticker says 1002-627-269, did not see a date on this.

Any good? Saw a similar one that was red/white/blue at another store.

$25 is a pretty decent price (if you need one) from a quick search for 12/3 50' cords, and those are made in USA. Amazon price was like ~$34 for a yellow one.

If you can still find ‘em the Reese TowPower stuff has recently pennied in my store. I know some stores were way ahead of mine, so this is REALLY old news depending upon area.

I managed to snag a 4-flat wire harness left over in a clearance bin.

Sorry if this isn't the place and if I should be starting a thread. But I have a friend looking to get into electrical and I want to get him some tools or anything that can be beneficial for him. Any suggestions for anything between 30-60 dollars

I just wanted to return the saw at the reduced price, because I did not like the weight of it. I did want to keep the 2 batts at the reduced price. So i brought in the saw, and the online receipt. There was an issue that the sku did not come up. The manager got involved, and had to do an overide, since the online sku, and store sku is different. Not sure why that is? Theres definitely something wrong with their system though. I purchased the Ryobi hammer drill, to get the circ saw for the discounted price. I did the usual immediate return online of the drill, to keep the circ saw order. Well the circ saw is a big POS, so i returned it to store. Same issue. There was no record of the item. They actually gave me a store credit for the full amount of the saw. Which I wound up using for the Milwaukee circ saw kit(which I love). I cant imagine how much $ they are losing. I almost feel guilty, but who am I to correct the issue?

2q's:

1) 'Immediate return of the item online' - can you order both and cancel one, thereby avoiding ever having to deal with the hammer drill kit, or are you referring to just sending it back?

2) What made the circ saw a POS? My dad wanted one for christmas, but if it's a POS maybe I don't want to get it...

What was the message on the screen? Or even better, get us a picture :)

I will take a pic next time. Basically it's a large red triangle and says "please see attendant" underneath (with the item on the left side of the screen showing $.01

You guys arguing about someone else’s experience with SCO need to get over yourselves. The reality is that the systems vary. Some don’t differentiate penny items from the rest. Some throw a flag on the first penny item. Some throw a flag after multiples of the same penny item. Some penny items will trip you up at the same register you just went through with other pennies, without issue. This is all first hand experience from many HDs in 6 different states. Get a grip, people.

I checked that at my store, most stuff was discounted just a dollar (or less), not the usual markdown schedule. Not sure if it's just a slow start or maybe some holiday pricing or what. I am going to keep an eye on them though.

Nearly all companies use Columbus OH as a test market because of the demographics, it is a good representation of much of the country.
