Gman007, thanks!

Here are a couple Stephens vise pictures for comparison to the Parker. Pictures are of the 2 inch jewelers model, available in both nickel plated and unplated. The nickel plated ones are much less common due to the additional cost of the plating. The swivel base ones even more scarce.

The vises were available in jaw sizes of 2 in., 2 3/4 in., 3 1/2 in., 4 1/2 in., 5 1/2 in., and 6 1/2 in. Weights ranged from 2 lbs, to a whopping 160 lbs. for the largest model. This information was taken from a Tower & Lyon catalog ca. 1904. Recently I came across a 1908 ad from the Charles H. Besly Co. of Chicago that listed the above sizes but also a monster with 9 1/2 inch jaws that would open 14 inches and weighed in at 420 lbs. with a swivel base and 380 lbs. without the base. Cost was $150.00 with the swivel base and $140.00 without. This is equivalent to a bit over $3700 in 2016 dollars for the swivel base model.

The last picture will give you some idea of the complexity of the mechanism.
Sorry for the small pictures, I’m still working that out.

Mike

Dang, I was ready to see Mike and Joe fight after school at the church ;)

Then again, I don't have vises I don't use. Doing otherwise would be like dating Jessica Alba and sleeping on the couch.

Mike, I emailed you about a month ago and recognized that little Parker on the shelf.
Welcome to the group with vise vices. That little Parker might not be missing a lock down handle. The plug in the picture is from a Parker swivel base vise with the same type lock handle. You could place the handle on either side and plug the other hole. Just a theory but I'm sticking with it.

TJ: at the risk of starting another fire in California might I ask why you have to say your sig line sentence TWICE? is that to remind you to start spiffing up those 20 vises on the shelf or ?? :D

Joe: here I and maybe some of the rest of us thought you were slowing down your vise buying and selling or giving away a bunch. at the risk of getting a threat of a New Jersey dirt nap i've got a few irons in the fire to pull out a few in your part of VISE HEAVEN some day soon. OK?

how much is the VIG to do this and just send me a bill. :D

also congrats on getting your bride to go on road trips with you to pick up a trunk load of vises cause mine does and it's a good excuse to see parts of the USA together.

Mike: welcome to GJ and it looks like you not only came armed with some special vises, but you sound like you have some special knowledge too and please share more pictures and knowledge as you have time to.

thanks in advance

That is true if the vise uses the brake pad set up. I always wondered how far back they made the brake shoe design.

I’m with GET. Here’s one I have. Like GET said i also think it’s so you can place the lockdown handle on either side.

Here is the one I was thinking about. Looks like the one piece ring got the plug and the two piece ring had the stud filling the hole. Kevin the date is 1910 on the brake shoe patent.

Beats blocking your work up or yelling for one of your sons to come hold something!
Kind of amazing, actually. Two vises capable of multiple axes and multiple elevations in relationship to each other.

Interesting that it was made by Albert Lea Foundry. That was the successor company to Albert Lea Tractor Mfg Co. When the tractor maker went under the foundry emerged in the same buildings with some of the same principals. The foundry was more diverse. EDIT: Outlaw may already know and if not would likely be interested in hearing that they also later made camp stoves and lanterns on the same site - as American Gas.

I vaguely recollect seeing something about that. I'm not an AGM fanatic, But I do own one of their old stoves (Mod 2)...

You guys got me to wondering how this vise worked so I went in the garage and took it apart. Based on what I saw I still think it had two hold downs since it does not use the brake shoe design. I took som pictures so see what you think.

I have a #94 like that and would show it to yaw if Photobucket wasn't holding my pics hostage.---But here's a Charles Parker #94 with recognition of the T. Hall patent from 1873 on one side.---On page 1298, post 25949.

That is sad to see Mike. It can be fixed but requires a machine shop.

Mike if you could let me know the Model Number and jaw width then I would like to add it to our Spreadsheet. I have a link to it below.

It is a shame because the rest of the vise is very good. On the bright side, however, is that it is really only cosmetic, as it can only be seen when the vise is removed from the base.

Finished up a Reed 105 R tonight.

4 hole fixed base - dual oil ports - 1936 patent date - flat nosed spindle.

After stripping and wire brushing, I used acid etching primer then Rustoleum Satin Sapphire blue spray enamel and silver automotive touch up for the lettering.

Sharing my joy of acquiring a 4" Craftsman made by Columbian around 1968. $50 from Craigslist (pictures are from the CL ad). Beside the white spots of plaster, some surface rust, and missing Craftsman decal on r.h. side (I assume it was made of brass) the vise looks to be in a top shape.

Thanks to a post by Outlawmws in another thread I could identify the vise as the one from a 1968 ad. Back in 1968 the new 4" ver. of this vise cost $44.99 + extra $8.99 for a swivel base. So, it was an expensive vise back in the day. The sum of $54 in 1968 would be an equivalent to $384 in today's money according to this inflation calculator.

A version of the same vise is still being made and sold on Amazon for $500+

I picked up an old Wilton 500 in Louisville this week. It was a mechanics Vise who got started in the business back in the late 30’s. It’s got a lite rust covering it but no damage or abuse. This will be a fun restore this Spring. The date stamp is faint. Looks like it is stamped GUAR EXP 12 31 50

I have some Chas. Parker parts available if anyone is looking to repair.

All have been cleaned up

(1) Swivel base #973 1/2 A (complete - minus wrench)
(1) #1 Main Screw Nut (complete)
(1) #433 1/2 - 3.5" main draw bar w/ retention collar, main screw & spare jaw (complete) Parker used hardened tool for their jaws.

I am not sure which models all these parts interchange with. The 443 1/2 main body is toast with the front broken off.

I was going to separate all the pieces and sell them off on eBay, but thought I would make sure nobody here needs them first.

Are the jaws the newer style like this. I'm working on a 433 1/2 right now. All my parts are really good but I might take a spare jaw and main nut.

My $8 brazed Reed 204 R, perfect for the Workmate. It was actually $5 but I didn't have that change. One of those I asked the guy if any repairs, 'no', then I show up to this deals and start walking away when he says $5. Cant turn that down. Little bit of jaw work, little bit of BLO, this is a perfect user that I don't care about hurting.

Btw, Drives ... not sure on the double sig

Then again, I don't have vises I don't use. Doing otherwise would be like dating Jessica Alba and sleeping on the couch.

For some reason I really like the look of this old Heuer vise. I know Heuer is still in business and makes vises currently, but I prefer the old ones.

Anyone know how these are for dependability?

The one pictured got away from me on eBay and I’m having a hard time finding any others for sale that aren’t way overpriced.

I really wanted it and maxed out my bid at $90. I think it ended up going for around $250. Too rich for my blood.

I see the other Buy It Now Heuers are in the $280 to $300 range. I guess I won’t be getting one anytime soon.

Jeff, that is still a nice find, I mean what can one buy with $8 these day? You have a lot more than that in parts alone. The brazing looks decent too and should work for most jobs.

By the way when I saw the photo , momentarily I lapsed back to my old state of confusion regarding R series nose but then remembered it is the transition model
With meatball nose but all the other R features :)
