I'm a few months into my new shop. Wanted to share. I will add details as I go, but the basic concept was to get my home garage clear of toys and equipment so I can park my daily driver in the garage and have a functional auto shop. We had considered several options; metal building, pole barn, and since it's going so close to the house my wife wanted to match up as close as possible. I wanted a lift installed from the begining. The builder and I went through several interior layouts and ended up with a solid plan. The structure is 40' x 60' approx 2000 sq. ft. Under roof with a 1300' main floor and approx 1500 above on the second. There is 16'of carports and 8' porches on the side and rear. The original plan was a vaulted ceiling and no second floor, thankfully the lumberyard owner talked me into the second floor, as this will really make the shop. This resulted in an additional expense, but the end product will be worth the extra expendenture. We installed a laminated beam 36' x 8" wide. This eliminated the need for any Lally posts. The second floor is all I Joists and will hold the weight of a vehicle.

The information here on GJ has been extremely helpful and I look forward to completion in a few weeks.

I'll post more as I have time.

Dan

These are through the latest stage of utility rough in....inspection on Tuesday so we can add power!

I've included the ground floor plan with lighting. There are minor revisions since this drawing was done, but it's getting there.

First off congrats on the new shed

But what's the story behind that lift?? I can't imagine having to construct around that massive thing if I was the builder. But what is the height and does it allow you access to the second floor or something allow those lines?

Anyhow keep up the great job of posting pics, it's a interesting build.

LiftZilla is basically an elevator (link added below).

The concept to start was a standard lift that did not require bolt down so I could move it for auto storage when not in use for mechanical work. Then I could move it anywhere in the shop. The ceiling was going to be vaulted, which cost almost, if not more, to build and engineer the trusses as putting in the second floor. The owner of the lumber yard built a workshop recently and regretted wasting the space up top. It was his GREAT suggestion. That got me researching lifts. This lift is designed exactly the same as the standard 4 post, but designed to go 12' 6" for motor homes and tall sprinter vans, it's over 13" tall. It sits on lock 1" above the 2nd floor decking at 11'3". It's a long story, but the re-seller of the lift somewhat scammed me into speeding the lift install. That said, thank goodness we did it this way. Imagine being an inch off anywhere??? This assured we would not have an issue. It's also been handy for moving materials and not a huge imposition or impedance to the build.

And it's nice to see "The shed" getting the same response I had when it was uttered to me......I guffawed as did my buddy.

Edited in some most of the lift specific pics.

Looking good, where in TN if you don't mind the question? No need for specifics, "Nashville area" or similar is fine....

Wow interesting. But I do understand constructing to a known value. I've had far too many times over the years where despite having the supposed engineered plans the final product varied in some form or fashion that resulted in having to reconstruct a assembly (heck I'm glad I waited until I had my lista cabinets in hand before building the platform as a couple of the measurements varied ~1/8" which can add up) Plus since you got to use it to your advantage during construction, that's certainly a WIN!
