Boom I am sure in Ohio you are enjoying the same wonderful single digits (and even below zero) temperatures that we are having in Michigan. So like a good bear my vise activity is in winter hibernation and will not wake up until at least May :D

LoL! I got you man. I went and bought a big salamander heater so i can still go into the garage and play with the vises but yeah i agree with you some days. I need to hibernate the vise activity til April.:willy_nil

Thanks for the idea Drives, but work bench real estate is way too valuable. I am thinking about something that will fit on a bookcase section about 2 feet wide and a foot or so high.

For an ORDERLY display my choice would be an older heavy duty shelf unit like the one drives just reconfigured in his garage. Maybe an 16-18" deep unit with 5 levels. Vises ONLY.

The front ledge of the shelf could have laser etched SS tags with a barcode and/or make/model

A few months ago, I bought a Hollands model 16 (6") vise for $125 with the intention of flipping it. A few weeks ago, I sold that vise to my employer. I installed it myself and within a couple days, people from all over the plant were coming to maintenance to see and use the "new" vise.

This morning I came into work and found this: stripped clean and painted cat yellow. The guys love the new vise!

Great story! Seems like you are planting the seeds for a new round of vise aficionados there at work.
Good to hear from you after your absence.

Great idea! Are you equipped to make tags like that? I bet others would be interested too.

Riley: i'm not surprised the guys at your work are drooling over your ex Holland 16 vise cause it's a beast. did you weigh it? also since you were injured even hauling it around in halves was heavy so hope you didn't hurt yourself. VERY COOL STORY!!

Shift: I like Lis' idea a lot and i think one or two of our members has an ADDRESSOGRAPH machine that used to make dog tags and the old metal credit cards that your parents and grandparents would have swiped and given a carbon copy at their favorite department store. i'll try to remember who has it and get back to you and THE LIST OF TAKERS.

Lis: great idea!!

I inherited this Chas Parker 955 vise when i purchased my place. It unfortunately has a broken drawbar.

Is it worth fixing? Any idea on where i can purchase a replacement drawbar? Is there a salvage yard for vise?

CMG: finding parts for some of our 70 to over 100 year old vises is a challenge at best. i've got your Parker's big brother with almost that same exact crack and waiting to find it's mate some day where the other part is broken.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM and hold on to that vise until you find the parts and might i suggest you go in your GJ profile and put in your location which might help cause shipping costs would not be cheap so finding a local member with parts or a trade for a working vise so he can fix his might be your best bet.

also while you are in your profile click on AVATAR and download one of your favorite pictures so it will show up under your new Garage Journal (GJ) handle.

cheers

CMG: if you know a good BRAZING PERSON. i'm not sure i know one locally, but i know a few of the old guys around here have some skills that they haven't even mentioned.

if you'd rather trade your old parker for a smaller working vise let me know by sending me a PM (private message thru GJ) with your email and maybe we'll meet up to discuss options. Parker isn't one of my favorite vise companies, but I'm hoping to find one or two some day that weren't beat to **** and maybe have a few parts for them hanging around cause they are not cheap or easy to fix.

CMG I will trade you my 955 for yours :D

Seriously though, like Drives said at best finding a replacement part is a very looooooooooooong shot.

But I would suggest you part the vise (the good parts like main screw, nut, jaw inserts, static housing, main screw collar/garter, etc) and sell it on ebay! This way you make some money (may be use it towards buying a clean vintage American vise) plus you do a good deed as most likely there is someone out there that needs those parts and you would be a hero saving his day.

drives or any other PNW vise aficionados: I'd be happy to help store/categorize/display your collections at MY place [emoji3]. I have hundreds of feet of EZ rect shelving (with 500-800 pound shelf capacity depending on configuration)

Here's one section in my back room ready to go. I'll clean all my **** off of course...

Drives Even though we are done with personal Parker jokes :D, I have come to a serious realization that it is not that the Parkers have been beat to ****, but rather broken down and retired Parkers must like the WA beautiful scenery and retire there in mass. I mean good grief what is with all these broken Parkers in WA but nowhere else? :headscrat

Lis: drive the truck down and let's discuss the storage options as i'm in a slimming the herd mood lately.

007: have you ever seen a logger swing an axe? it's something to behold that is for certain and i can tell you with all honesty they can swing a sledge even harder. they don't build many men like those guys any more and if you recall seeing all those vise ads with the ad saying this vise will survive a sledgehammer blow you can bet these old loggers were here to prove them wrong.

here's a picture of one of my gramp's old Cat D9's in case you wanted to build a logging road he was the guy to call. I'm not sure that's him in the picture, but I think he must have owned 20 of those shirts and maybe another 20 pairs of those jeans. here's a picture of him in his little D6 that he drove around the house to move a little dirt around with.

yep Parkers didn't last long out here and Rock Islands and Reeds barely survived too.

Has anyone ever noticed this? This is a 4.5" Craftsman Pro vise.
Look at the number stamp on the bottom of the swivel base. That looks like a Wilton number. These Cman Pro vises are Chinese arent they?. Strange how it has what looks like a Wilton number under it

Also, someone on my local offer up has this listed as a wilton number 4, but I don't think they have a clue what they're talking about, can someone shed some light on what this is, and a value for it? 96f9ffa88494801fb44e53f36a6d26f4.jpg

Got an odd one for you guys today... So I posted a picture of one of restorations on Facebook, and someone messaged me, asking me how much I would want in order to restore their vise exactly like mine. They said it's a craftsman, that looks almost exactly like the before picture. I'm completely lost on this one, what would you guys charge for a vise restoration? Pic included is the one I posted on Facebooka8333283da0e5c65309e3dcfdf03da7c.jpg

I agree with Fretters
As an extra added bonus the buyer will get a long bolt instead of a vise handle.

I've use a paint pen, it wasn't bad. Some use a "stamp pad" method, with a small block. The key I would expect, is how much paint to have on said pad...

Also, some flat file the tops of the letters for a better cleaner surface.

This little 2 1/2" Miller Falls value line (cheap) vise was fun to restore. I had to make a new spindle handle and a cup washer for the mounting screw. The label couldn't be saved so I made a similar one. I thought the swivel base on the economy line vise is a nice feature.

Nice job! I like that version of the duel slider clamp on. My son has the top half of one of those. Never found a base for it...

Hey guys I'm new and never posted in any forums before. I saved a Wilton vise from litterally being thrown away and I found you guys while researching it. Anyways I'm trying to sell it but it's hard to price it. Its a model 825 I believe.

If that's a baby bullet, I wouldn't let it go for anything less than 350

Shift: i've seen many many members clamp those little vises to any shelf in their shop if they are just for display if that helps, but i'm sure you can make a nice stand even out of wood if you are not a welder.

also in case you might want to not feel alone all mine are in crates, boxes and stuffed everywhere and I couldn't tell you if i own just 5 or maybe 50 of them at the moment.

a smaller version of this big vise stand to sit on your bench or maybe a sort of STEAMPUNK idea using old pipe and clamping the little vises all around it and mount it on a bench or even off a ceiling?

Thanks for posting those pics! Gives me some ideas on the wheel hub and even more so the pipe stand!

Gainz, could you elaborate on the saving of an 825 from being trashed.---820s and 825s are pretty hot items among vise collectors.---One day you may wished you had kept it.

The Wilton 825 / 925 bullet vises are not actually baby bullets. They have 2.5" jaws and I believe are sometimes referred to as toddler bullets.

As far as value go to Ebay and search:

Wilton vise (825, 925)

Filter results to show only sold and completed listings. There are about 21 now to give you an idea and others to compare yours to as far as condition and inclusion of swivel base.

Please understand you will not get as much for your vise through any other venue. Ebay reaches a potentially global market but you also pay a 10% seller fee and another 3% to PayPal. I'm certainly no expert but if I saw it listed on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace right now for $100 I would be driving to go buy it. $150 not so much.

I saw your Craigslist post at $250 and to be honest you might get that on eBay probably kinda hard on Craigslist but one never knows.

Here is the clamp on vise stand I put together using 2 pieces of reclaimed redwood 2x6s. I ran them through my surface planer and gave them 2 coats of Watco oil.
The feet are 2 adjustable wrenches. The one on the left is a Coes and the other is somewhat different but it still makes an unusual and interesting support. I have a few more vises to clamp onto the board.

(Sorry...I still have to figure out how to post higher res photos from my new iPad)

Sorry for the confusion. My roomates were going to throw the vise away. But I kept it and now would like to sell it. And thank you guys for the input and knowledge. I have a guy going to buy next week for $150. I was going to use it to work on AR's until I found out what it was. Now if rather have a more inexpensive harbor freight vise and let a collector restore and treat this puppy right.
