Doing it this way I do not have to buy anything else... To me it gives me more flexibility...
I'm wondering about doing it this way and NEC code...
I've collected enough parts to build a solar system of sorts. Here's what I'm considering. Using a 1200W solar panel input to charge a bank of batteries, then pull off the bank at 24VDC to power an inverter, coming out of it at 120VAC to power shop lights and 120V small loads. What I want to do is is have it set where I can switch from my solar source to Utility source as needed through a 3 pole relay. I'd switch the Hot, neutral and ground through the relay all at once from each source going out to the load. I'd like to have the load on the common, Utility 120V on the NC contact and Solar 120V on the NO contact and power the coil to energize through either a remote switch or have it set up so when the batteries get to a preset threshold state of discharge, it denergizes the coil and goes back to Utility power source.
What does NEC code say about something like this?
You can do whatever you want inside your own garage. Code only matters when its time to sell, you get electrocuted, or your house burns down. If you want dedicated solar-powered circuits, go right ahead and put them in. You could switch your lighting and small loads circuit with a Triple-Pole-Double-Throw contactor/relay. Make sure it's rated for whatever the feeder circuit is capable of delivering.
As to the others saying "generating your own power at home is always more expensive" - that is only true if you're actually generating power from some sort of fuel source. Solar has a fixed one-time investment cost. Provided your batteries last a long time, and you have decent panels that don't degrade fast - it'll make "free" electricity once the initial cost is paid off.
Grid-tie inverters are great if you have constant high-power draws. However if your house usually has low power draw, grid-tie may not be all that great for you during the day, and will not help you at night. Many utilities will not pay (or allow) for grid-returned power, and if they do, its usually at a lower rate than they sell power to you. Additionally, grid-tie inverters are designed to shutdown if the mains loses power.
Battery-tied solar systems allow you to store and use power as you please. If you have low-demand during the day, your batteries will charge up all day. Once night time hits, you can start drawing off the batteries. With a large enough system, it's conceivable you'd never have to use power from the grid at all. However, your limited by the size of your inverter and battery system, and it's also less efficient.
There are pros and cons to each system, and it sounds like the OP has it figured out what he wants from his solar system.
Your figure is pretending that no power will be used from the grid during the day, and that the battery is only going to last the minimum amount of time, and that the battery is going to be fully discharged every single time. A good deep cycle lead acid battery will last thousands of cycles if only partially discharged - up to 5,000 cycles or more for certain gel-cell type batteries.It's always more expensive, even for solar, just by factoring in the cycle count and capital cost of the batteries.
about $0.28/kWh for flooded lead acid. grid power costs half that. the only way it's cheaper than grid power is if you get your batteries for free.

I'd have to buy one, they are not cheap...
Actually 6-8000 times if only discharged 20%, a solid 3-4000 times at 30% discharge at least the ones we use in the light towers...They use AGM batteries,.
BTW, my batteries are just about free...
I'd be switching from one source to the other at times when I exceed capacity for an extended time...
