Howdy folks, I am in the market for a slide hammer kit. I want a kit that can do internal bearings like wheel bearings on cars/trucks as well as machines (I own a tree service) and the basic stuff. I am thinking 5 pound range and looking to spend $2-300. Thanks for the help.

Sears puts their 10 way slide hammer on sale from 49.00 to 59.00 at times.

The only real hardened steel that will take repeated is abuse is the Snap-on. I think with the attachments you are going to need it will be a little less than $500 all in. The OTC seems to be hit or miss. Many people really like it but a few complain of mushrooming or stripped threads. They sell each part individually though so you can replace anything that deforms.

I have one and have never had trouble with it but I have a hub grappler for hubs so I use it mostly for CV axles and axle seals. I'm in Florida so those usually don't come out too hard.

Only you know how often you will use it and if the extra durability is worth the extra cost.

The OTC Silver ******* sets have been around for years. I had one and thought it was made in China. Those Chinese/Taiwan are all based on the same design and are sold by OTC, Sunex and others.

The only US ones I have seen are Snap-on and Proto

Snap on doesn’t have a slide hammer. Just the baby slide hammer

I bought one made by OEM tools. I'm sure its not the best out there but it seems to be holding up well from the bit I have used it.

OTC / Owatonna Tool Company / US made / pre-tested

Bearing puller - not a hub puller, but you can get that attachment separately - they pretty much all use 5/8" threads (at least the older stuff did):

$64.15 including $24.15 "expedited" shipping "buy now"
contact sender and ask them how much for standard USPS rates to your zip code.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/OTC-954-Pi...al-Slide-Hammer-Owatonna-Tool-Co/142683359795

* there are all kinds of US-made used/slightly used pullers listed on Ebay in Owatonna / OTC / Proto quite frequently.
* if you really dig through the Proto listings you can find separate jaw pieces sometimes. Sellers don't always list them with the word "puller" in the ad header or description, though.

Wrong... Snap on carries a Rebranded “bluepoint” 12lbs slide hammer solo (CJ1250) and as (CJ1200) kit but for body work. Although both are compatible with all their puller sets... to make a similar if not broader set compared to the otc... both brands are well made in my opinion,

Although the snappy is way over built, It has heavier attachments, more weight, larger rod and threads on the (body kit 3/4”) vs 5/8 rod that comes on the solo version.

Either way you can go wrong, but for occasional use the otc is pretty much a no brainer.

Howdy! I am leaning towards the OTC set but I wouldn't pass on a good used Snappy puller. And so the hunt begins!

I think I got one at Napa some moons ago. I probably need it every 2 years or so, its definitely worthwhile.

If you have a lathe, a 5/8-18 UNF tap should be in your toolbox for making up custom tools for the end :)

This was pretty handy, but sad I had to hack it up (OTC 7507) to fit my FWD axles. I took about 3/16" off each side of the tool plus around the radius. Its just bandsawed....as I said self-hacked but I was in a hurry and precision did not seem to help the job.

The automotive style is pretty hefty, sometimes one needs a different style puller ;)

What? Snap on has a handful of them.

CG250-9 = 2lb
CJ97-3A = 3-3/4lb
CG46-2 = 6lb
CG45670 = 10lb

Plus a 1-1/16lb (CG240 Series), 2-1/8lb (CG250 Series), 3-1/2lb (CG270/280 Series)

I have the catalog here and can’t really find anything except the 1 1/16

They don’t have a traditional slide hammer. Is that a better way to put it?

The only one I’ve ever seen on truck is cj93b and cj2003a

ok. I just looked under PULLERS in Catalog 1200.... I have several different Snappy ones that I use, mixed with a bunch of other brands (Proto, OTC, Morgan, etc) and of course the frikin threads are never the one you need.

1400 is free of the site if you don’t have a driver.

Seems like they took 10 years to come out with 1200. And then what 2 years later were at 1400

I have a ATD which is like the OTC Sliver *******. https://atdtools.com/3045 My kit has the front hub puller as well though and I added the ATD bearing adapters. I use mine for all sorts of things other than automotive. I've used mine to pull studs out of a wall that I did not want to damage the other side of the drywall that were screwed and glued to. Worked like a charm, with out any touch up work on the other side of the wall. Rips them out like lighting once I cut them with a oscillating saw. Just used a long lag with the dent puller adapter.

I actually have the 1400 as well (from the site as you mentioned), but....I have all my stuff highlighted in the 1200. I take it to the swap meets etc....and I haven't sat down to highlight the 1400 yet.

Looks like the OTC is a good bet then for the general home user? I have a ZF5 on the bench thats going to need some bearings pulled so its time to pull the trigger on a slide hammer.

I just bought this one back in December. Isn't this a traditional slide hammer?
