My 2 year old Catahoula... me and Bodhi drink a lot...

Duke, a mutt we rescued (must have retrievier in him) & Daisy (Staffordshire Terrier). Duke is the real garage dog. He is my shadow, doesn't care what we're doing as long as he can come, too.

My wife says Daisy is a Schiffer dog (got Schiffer brains...). I can show Duke what I want him to do once or twice and he's got it. For example, he'd walk down the driveway with me every morning to get the newspaper. One day I thought, 'why I am doing this, I got a dog?' so I picked up the paper, put in his mouth and had him carry it back to the house. The next day I walked to the end of the driveway, pointed to the paper and said, 'bring the paper'. He picked it up and we walked back to the house. On the third day he went got the paper and was heading back before I got half way there. Now I just send him out every morning and he brings me the paper. If the mailbox wasn't on the other side of the street I'd consider teaching him how to open the door...

They are both very good with kids. Our grandson likes to go for walks with us. He will hold Duke's leash and I just tell the dog to go easy, the baby's got your leash. Somehow he knows and just walks along nicely.

You never get over or forget the ones you've lost. They can never be replaced. But, getting another is not a replacement, but a chance to bond with something that just gives without conditions. No two dogs are ever alike and you grow to love them because of their differences. It does not diminish but rather strengthens the memories of all the others that have come before. Can't seem to upload pics today for some reason but pics will be forth coming. We have Giant Schnauzers along with a mini and a jack russel, horses, cats, bird etc.....

damn you guys gotta be more than lunkheads and talk reason sometimes.........chaingangs comments seem to have struck a nerve and i think i just may look for a new friend in the spring, after i get a fence up...........maybe.......but looking at all the buddys on here sure make me think about it............

After the loss of our 17 year old Chocolate Lab, who helped raise our son, we waited a full year before even considering another dog. Learning Darby was about to be put down, we ended up rescuing him. After 6 weeks with us he still cowers from obvious abuse from a man and even shys away from most women, but he is starting to become our buddy.

Even the worst day at work can be put back into perspective when Darby creeps up to me, one inch at a time, to seek a reassuring pat on his head.

Rescued from "Death Row", Darby is now happy to be on a "Chain Gang" with his buddy Chief.

After a dozen years of owning my Dobe pup I had to put her down last fall. I wanted to wait about two years before getting another Dobe... but when the girlfriend moved in with her little dog... she wanted another big one right away (she just put her pit down as well). So.... entering my life again... a dobe that everyone falls in love with as soon as they meet her... "Deedee".

Ravallese's Caught in the Act (aka DeeDee) about a week after we got her... right in the middle of the shop build hanging out with the mother who came over to see the progress.



The girlfriend also brought along a chewey wa wa (aka Anika) that is true protector of the yard/shop and who puts the dobe in her place


I wasn't quite ready for a new Dobe while the shop build was underway... wanted to wait till next year... but this one is truly adorable and the perfect addition to the family.

The Siberian Husky was a rescue case...the original owner's wife said to get rid of him or she'd kill him after he chewed up their brand-new leather couch. Also, he hates deep snow.

The Black Lab mix was a true rescue. She has no tail...cut off right at the base, but the sweetest, calmest dog you ever met. Twelve years old and occasionally needs a boost getting up. She hates water.

The third, a Jack Russell, belongs to our neighbors. When they're not home he's hanging out with us. He has a key to the back door and lets himself him whenever he wants.

As long as we're talking rescue dogs, Virgil, above, is a rescue from the http://www.coonhoundrescue.com/ He's been a great dog for us. Our two previous dogs were from local Humane Societies. We've always adopted our dogs.

1. Virgil, black and tan coonhound mix

3. Rusty, redbone coonhound mix

i remember virgil! i saw him one time when i was looking on the coonhound rescue site. thought he looked like a nice happy boy. we have a black and tan mix and a 8 month german shepherd. i will try to get pics asap!

I thought I was the only one who named dogs after F1 drivers. Here's Senna, he was rescued at four months from a neglected, and possible abused, situation. His early life caused him no end of anxieties and destructive tendencies, but we loved him fiercely and he was our constant shadow. Marley and Me read like a documentary of our life with Senna. He's a shepherd husky mix, smart as hell and he used his brains for eeeeevil. Acted like a pup for his first 12 years, but we had to put him down in his 13th, about 2 years ago, because his back half refused to work anymore and we couldn't even touch him to comfort him because he snapped at everyone.

Just come into our lives this summer are Max and Ruby. They are still learning their way around the shop, but they love to carry off my rags and carwashing devices. They are brother and sister Newf / Bernese Mountain Dog mixes. I was going to name them Alonso and Schumacher (Al and Shuey) but got outvoted by my Princess, so they are Max and Ruby after the brother and sister in the popular children's book series. Max is a big love-muffin who just wants to kiss everyone and carry around their shoes. Ruby is a bundle of nerves and wants to see everything, do everything and rule everyone. She wants to be the Queen.

We almost lost Max at Thanksgiving. He was in the doggy hospital with a high fever for a week. Lost 14 pounds in that time and was just skin and bones when we retrieved him. He could hardly stand on his own. But he has come roaring back, putting on over 25 lbs in the month of December. He's showing a few minor long term effects of his illness, but he has astounded us with his recovery. He will probably be 150 lbs before he stops growing.

Here is our Maltese, Cissy Boo. She is constantly by our side. Very good little girl. She is 6 years old this year and weighs in at a hefty almost 6 lbs. She will come down to the garage and smell every thing down there. When she gets bored she will head back upstairs and resume her position on the couch, sleeping/guarding.





This is her baby. I had no idea how attached to it she was till we thought about throwing it away one day. She has "loved" that little baby and tore the fuzz off of it her entire life and it shows. For some reason my wife put it on the counter. The dog must have seen her put it up there. Cissy Boo sat in the floor below and asked for the toy back until we put it back on the floor.

Well not exactly a Dog but close enough this is GK ( garage kitty ) . I found her in the garage a few months back eating the Koi food for the fish in the pond out back. I got her some cat food and she settled in . when she first showed up you couldnt get within 10 feet of her and as you can see by this picture if I am sitting at the laptop in the garage she is now in my lap .

Garage cats are a good thing, if nothing else you don't get mice. Both of my dogs are cat friendly, so if a cat ever decided to move into my shop I would probably be OK with it.

We had a shop cat about 20 years ago named Smokey in honor of Smokey Yunick. We always thought Smokey was dark brown, but after a couple years one of the guys took him home and his wife gave him a bath. Turned out Smokey was bright orange. The brown was probably from us petting him with greasy hands.

They are great dogs. It is sad that they are usually associated with being a bully breed. I get it all the time with mine. People ask "oh she is so cute, what kind of dog is she?". When I tell pit mix, I get the "oh" & the look.

I'm in complete agreement you, Dan. We had a ********* cat years ago that hung out in the garage with me. If I was working in the interior of a car, she was stretched out on the parcel shelf, passenger seat or right in the middle of my lap. There's nothing that gives me more of a feeling of contentment than having a purring cat laying in my lap or nearby.

Unfortunately, we also had a Husky who at the one year mark developed a very strong prey drive.

I belong to another forum, 67-72chevytrucks.com (love them trucks) and right now Bonni the chicken is in the process of visiting as many members as possible. So far he's been to North Carolina and Texas.

He is visiting some NW members of the board now and will soon be off to who knows where. I just draw names of people that wanna participate. Looks like he will be spending some time in Europe and Australia too...If their names get drawn =)

This is Newton, the world's best apple picking dog.

We have a small orchard beside our house. I was amused, when he was a pup, to watch him search among the windfalls for the best apple he could find and then munch it up core and all. As he got older, he learned that the best apples are on the trees. Of course, for a young golden retreiver, leaping 4-feet in the air and coming down with an apple between your teeth is nothing. So, for a while he picked apples and would eat them fresh. Then, one day the neighbor dog came over and I saw the ultimate. Newton jumped into a tree, grabbed a ladden branch between his teeth and shook it like a rag as he hung from the branch 3-feet off the ground. ALL the apples were shaken loose from the branch and Newton and his buddy (Brownie) gorged themselves with the fresh apples.

Crazy dog. Named him after "Sir Isaac". Too smart for his own good sometimes. In the shop, he's a downright thief. He'll wait until you turn your back and then sneak off with something important...like your hat or a complete box of nails (open) or the last PVC fitting you need to finish a job. Funny. Really funny. We love him to pieces.

I'll have to wait for retirement (16 years) before I can get another dog. My family had a mutt from 1969 until she died aged 17 in 1986, I was 20 and utterly devastated. Two years later I rescued a pup from a local housing estate in London and named him Mutley. He lived with me for a few years and then moved in with my parents after they retired. We lost him in 1998 aged 10 to cancer.

Reading this thread helps me to remember how much a dog becomes part of your life, not just part of the family. Not ashamed to say I have a tear in my eye as I type.

I hear ya Bazz.... Our dogs are definitely part of the family. I always tell my wife that if I was a dog, I would want to live with us !!
