EXCLUDES MATTRESSES!!

The Horror... The Horror...

Mattresses are the only thing I see when I go to the store!

It is baffling to me that the local Sears hometown dedicate a large area for mattresses. Seems that they can display a lot of tools in that area, invite more foot traffic, and make more profit. Maybe the profit margin is that much larger on selling mattresses?

My brother-in-law has a mattress business. It started small/as a side-job... but the markup on mattresses is so high that he was able to quit his day job.

By far, his biggest expense are the rent on his stores (he started selling at flea markets... then moved to online)... so I guess it's not surprising that Sears is filling up all their empty space with high-margin items.

I'm wondering if maybe all the display mattresses are provided at no cost by the manufacturer, and Sears only has to actually pay when someone actually buys a mattresses that is then shipped to them from a warehouse.

Since Sears probably wouldn't actually be able to sell the used displays, since many states have laws against selling "used" mattresses, they probably don't have to pay for them. It may be a cost eaten by the manufacturer, not Sears.

If Sears could fill the store with essentially "free" display mattresses, that could be part of the strategy to make the store look full. Maybe if they tried to fill the store with tools, they would have to actually prepay for everything up front to stock the store.

The local store I go to, they appear desperate to fill the store with whatever they can. They even have cheap looking junkie furniture that appears to be from the Kmart that closed down two months ago on the other side of the mall.

Tools and such likely have a high theft rate, especially for small items like sockets and ratchets, so I can't see any supplier agreeing to a pay when sold. Try stealing a mattress and it becomes very low risk for the supplier.

Yeah, unfortunately theft has been an increasing problem as the remaining stores have had to keep cutting staff levels over the last few years, from what I've heard. Not enough employees on duty to have a presence in every department for deterrence, and not enough security people ("Asset Protection") to monitor all the cameras effectively, much less do anything if something happens; some stores are only being monitored remotely now (no security people on site).

Theft is probably a low priority at my local store. The shelves are so EMPTY, there is nothing to steal anyway. Shelves haven't been restocked probably since October, 2017.

Yeah and it doesn't help that the checkout registers are in the middle of the store instead of near the exits where employees could actually see people walking out with stuff...

Was at sears again last night and (I know this is mentioned A LOT) the tool section just keeps getting worse and worse. Power tools are bare, maybe one cheapie router left and the c3 drills. They did have a couple nextec drills come in which was strange. Of course they have all the display models for the planer, drill presses etc but only miter saws and sanders in stock underneath. I would ask for a deal on the displays but this store marks nothing down so no need to bother. All the shelf space is filled in with the tool set boxes from christmas.

Walked up and down the hand tool aisles and they are all 3/4 empty.

The lawn and garden section was pretty full though. Looked for the new 60v line but did not find anything.

Unfortunately a lot of the sets in my store are missing one or two pieces. I honestly think I could wheel a toolbox out the doors.

'Back in the day', there was a phone number you could call if one of the big tool sets had pieces missing, and they would send you the missing pieces at no additional cost. I'm guessing that either they no longer do that at all, or else they can't get ahold of replacements for a lot of the pieces even if they want to, due to vendor losses/changes. Anyone tried that recently?

Yeah you call Apex tool directly. They will help you out. I just did it a few months ago with actually a NOS USA 150pc set I got on Craigslist cheap. It was new/sealed but missing a couple hex/Allen keys. Called them up and they had a bit of trouble because that specific hex key pouch hasn't been made in years. But sure enough a week later and brand new old stock USA made entire set of hex keys showed up at my door. Pretty amazing. A few months before I was shorted a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter. That came in under a week too. It's not a Sears run thing it's Apex tools so surprise surprise it runs flawlessly when you have an issue.

Yeah I think when the people at the store say they can't replace a broken piece, people just go over to the tools and pull it out of a set. I've noticed even in my hometown store a couple like that. The owner has a few sets in the back he had to do for people and he said he's been waiting on replacements from Sears forever...

My store is small so it's not unusual to only have 1 drill press or 1 grinder sitting out. The tool section doesn't really look too different than it did before, just more china and for some reason the individual screwdrivers are missing but the sets are all there? Individual sockets are all there for the most part.

I don't think he sells a ton of tools to begin with, it's mostly appliances and Lawn & Garden.

I just picked up 4 new Knipex pliers from Sears with $30.90 back in points for $95.74 after tax, with free shipping.

They currently have $10 bonus points back for every $30 on tools, and I had a $15 off $100 "freecash" points offer, plus a few Knipex tools on sale that makes them no longer overpriced from Sears to begin with. It came out to $103, so I applied only $13 of the "$15 off $100" available points to keep the subtotal above $90 in order to get $30 bonus points back instead of $20.

I'm sure many of us here would definitely be using the $30.90 in points (good for 1 year), so minus that, it ends up being $16.21 per plier. Even without the $15 off $100 freecash offer (I'm not sure if everyone gets that or if it's per account), it still comes out to $18.21 per plier.

If anyone is interested, I grabbed the following:

Knipex 8" Long nose pliers w/o cutter - $27.28
Knipex 8" Combination Pliers - $29.17 (was $20.67 when I first added it to my cart, but went up before I checked out)
Knipex 5" Long Nose Pliers with Cutter - $21.60
Knipex 7 1/4" Diagonal cutters - $25.27

You might want to look at your account. You can't use only a portion of an offer like that*. If you only redeemed $13, that came from you base points & the offer wouldn't be used. You would have been better off finding a $2 filler so your points would not have been used.

* Some offers that are a result of playing a game on Xtra, results in an offer (usually $5 or $7) that only a portion of the amount can be applied to an order

Good deal otherwise, if you need those pliers

Good to know Sears isn't directly involved in that process and it's still working. :)

Weird. When you're on the checkout page and you type in how many points you're redeeming, it tells you right there when you click "Redeem" how many are going to come out of your "FREECASH" offer, how many come out of your base points, and how many points you're getting back. When I tried applying any portion of points over $15, it would say e.g. "$18.50 applied, $15 from FREECASH" or something along those lines. When I applied $13, it said "$13 applied, $13 from FREECASH", so seems like it was letting me do it.

Can't know for sure though, because right after I posted here, but before I hit "Confirm order", I actually did go back and add a $5 filler just so I wouldn't be losing out on $2 from the "freecash" offer

EDIT: Also, the FREECASH offer was not the result of playing a game on Xtra, so I'm not sure how that's relevant, unless you're saying that you've seen language like that before on FREECASH offers as well. I did read the terms of the FREECASH offer though before I checked out, and didn't see anything like that.

Typically the ones that you can use a portion of the points, don't have a minimum spending amount, which you said was $100 for this offer. Maybe things have changed (again). Been a few times I wish I could have used less than the minimum amount. I'll try to check on a future order.

Back to deals

6-Piece Extreme Grip Screwdrivers $15.99 ($39.99)

Craftsman 5 pc. Mini Plier Set $21.11 ($39.99)

Not so much an great deal, but I think this isn't being restocked:

Craftsman Impact Driver $19.99 ($24.99)

Though I just came across this typing this post:

OTC 1/2" Impact Driver $22.99
2 odd things on this item: the URL references a safe, & it lists a 5% restock fee (first ive seen that on an item page)

Just FYI, I bought that 5pc mini pliers set back in 2016 when it was on sale for $15, and I bought the impact driver last October when it was also on sale for $15, so they both do occasionally go lower. Not bad though when coupled with the $10 off $30 if you add a filler.

I think I bought pliers for $19.99 around Xmas, and the impact has been lower, but I think what is on the shelf is what's left. Figure someone is always looking for ways to spend their points more wisely

Yeah, I got the mini pliers for on sale $16 two months ago. Still, nearly 50% off is a decent deal too. :)

Might want to double-check the terms on that $10 back in points for every $30 spent...

Points awarded the next day and valid for 7 days.

Not 1 year...

I still have the confirmation page open. This is copy/pasted from the terms that come up when you click "see details" under the cashback in points offer:

Base Points: Members earn 1% in base points for every dollar spent. Base points are valid for one year after purchase/delivery date. Exclusions and limitations apply.

Bonus Points Offer: Promotional points members earn on top of base points. Bonus points are valid for 7 to 365 days after purchase date. Exclusions and limitations apply.

you have the proof right there(unfortunately). It says 7 to 365 days for bonus points, and the $10 for every $30 is listed as only being 7. Cool if it is 365, but check it out in your SYW account & let us know. I'd be more likely to buy some things if that were the case, though i for sure wouldn't wait a year to use either :bounce:

edit: on my order from last night, the email confirmation said I had $5 off $5 in store for the next week. Often I skip over the emails, but glad I checked

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a generic boilerplate for all cashback deals. You have to check the terms on the specific offer on a product page while the deal is still active. (Expand the offer bar above the product title/image, which rotates through several deals including the one about their credit card.) The numerous cashback deals they've been doing on $** purchases in the xyz department for the last couple months started out at 14-day points expirations for the first couple deals, but have been all 7-day expirations since then.

I could have sworn that page said the same thing, but now I'm thinking maybe I read it on the Cart page and not the product page, which means it was probably the same generic message. I had interpreted it as they become valid in 7 days and remain valid through 365 days.

Oh well, I have plenty of things in my "save for later" list, and Sears has plenty of new things on sale everyday, so shouldn't have a problem spending them in a week.

If nothing else, I may just use the points on yet another pair of Knipex pliers to fill out the set.

Their wording is often vague/confusing/contradictory, partly from incompetence and partly because they hope a lot of people will neglect to use their cashback points fast enough (deals that convince people to buy more and then take back the reason they were convinced to buy more = more earnings in exchange for less customer satisfaction ;) ).

You can also sign into your account on shopyourway.com to access your points history page - change the time period dropdown to "2018" and you can see upcoming expirations.

Yeah, just can't tell from my account other yet, because points don't show up until the order is shipped.

This right-angle screwdriver makes a nice addition to a regular set of screwdrivers, but stock for the set with bits and holder is dwindling.

I have that screwdriver. I've used it a handful of times, however each time it payed its price many times over in reducing the frustration factor. I've also used just the handle to remove a small bolt head that happened to be the same size as the bit holder.

Just noticed on my ibotta app, if you go through it you get 9% cash back from Sears. It says not valid with coupon or promo codes... Might be a good way to get a little extra back if you are trying to get some of the free point deals having to pay OOP...

Several people on SD are reporting difficulties getting the $40 back on the sold-by-Overstock home products deal, and having a hard time getting it corrected through chat. The sold-by-Sears/Kmart version of the deal seems to be working better.
