If you do any woodworking, you will appreciate the straight edges. Look for a 24" as that's also a very convenient size, probably the one I use most. Depends on the size of what you're working on. Superb for checking a rectangle you've laid out for cutting, or just assembled, to see if it's squared up properly.

John

i have 12" & 18" starrett combo sets, 12" CM and a couple 4" & 6" combo squares.

i keep the starrett stuff in the basement, wanted something inexpensive to keep in the garage, so when i need it out there it's already there.

seems like a cut a lot of galvanized tin for the wifes "projects" so having a 48" straightedge "on hand" will be nice, and for $8 it was a no brainer.

I've been reading all kinds of AMAZON horror stores for lack of a better word. People getting shipped the wrong item, receiving used items, etc. I have read that some people are running a scam. They order an item, then claim it is defective or the wrong item and they return it to AMAZON, but what they return is another item.

I think AMAZON becoming more a of a marketplace will be a problem. It makes sense on paper, use AMAZONs distribution system, but it seems fraught with opportunities for abuse and misuse and sub-par service.

I am not a Prime member but I have ordered a few things lately. Seems if you are not Prime the item doesn't leave the warehouse for several days. Once it ships, it comes quickly. I think AMAZON is intentionally doing this to drive Prime membership. I frown on joining anyone's club just for the opportunity to buy from them. I don't want Prime and I won't join Sams Club either.

As far as Craftsman goes, I think there are still some items worth buying there. Know what you're buying and there are good deals to be had. Still quite a few USA items that can be bought on sale for cheap.

The cool thing about these sets and what I did is I bought them and I bought bondhus gold L keys and cut them with my bandsaw and use the bondhus keys in the sockets. Most of my sets are Snap-on but I did not want to spend snap on money for long ball end.

I'll be honest, I did not even try the tekton keys. I replaced them right away with the bondhus. That's always an option if you don't like the tekton or they wear out.

Them and the bondhus are cheap enough that you can make all kinds of sets. Stubby, regular, and long, in Straight Shaft and ball end
I like that idea. I have a set of Snap-on ball ends, stubby, and standard length. I used 3 different sizes of the tektons today and they're OK. The socket is better quality than the actual hex key. But they're long enough to trim them back a few mm when they wear.

Been wanting a real parts washer for the house. Ordered one from my Snap On guy and it ended up backordered. His distributor happened to have this gigantic one collecting dust and made me deal for the same price. I can fit a whole motorcycle frame in it so that is a good thing...:D

Honestly, not having Prime is a big mistake if you use Amazon on a fairly regular basis. Free 2 day shipping just on my tool orders has more than paid for itself and I'm guaranteed 2 day delivery. If shipping costs you approximately $7 each order and you order 15x its already paying you back. I've ordered 15x just in the last 45 days.

since today is my 60th bday, and it being the 1st time in over 40 years ive taken my bday off from work, i hit a couple pawn shops this morning.

found this NIB CM pro die grinder for $30. it's missing the 1/8" collet.

took the roundabout way home to check clearance stuff at different home depot, nothing exciting, and dropped into HF for a look around.

picked up a 12" & 48" straight edge for garage use...

I recently needed two AC line spring disconnect tools. So I figured maybe it was time to stop piece mealing it. And after checking out just about everyone's kits, all of which lacked in some form or fashion of release tool ordered the OTC kit along with another set of a different style of line releases plus the pliers. Neither of which have been delivered yet. But this kit seems fairly well endowed :p

Ya that's a full size bar chair right there

Gezzis this kit is big, waaaaayyyy bigger then it needed to be. Now I gotta find a home for it.

I've ordered quite a bit of stuff from Amazon with only a very few returns. Prime pays for itself if you buy enough things from Amazon below the minimum for non-Prime as the 2-day shipping is free. There are 3rd party sellers on Amazon and they're not covered by the 2-day free shipping unless they're consigning their goods to Amazon (sold by XYZ and fulfilled by Amazon). I've seen some of the product reviews where folks have gotten stuff that someone else sent back but I believe they're much better at trapping that scam on the way in the return door than they were. Returns are not free except under certain circumstances. I've got good confidence in Amazon themselves. Regarding 3rd Party sellers who aren't consigning goods to Amazon, caveat emptor. It's not the Wild Wild West of ePrey though. Amazon generally keeps a tight rein on them. Did have an instance of one who misrepresented something as new when it wasn't. Amazon pulled him as a seller rather quickly after I complained with documentation and some proof it wasn't new, and got a full refund.

If someone isn't buying much from Amazon annually the cost of Prime doesn't make much sense economically.

These arrived via USPS today . . .

An X-Acto KS pencil sharpener, Old School style. Works very well. Unless you jam the pencil into it with excessive force, it stops cutting the pencil down when it's sharp, and this one gets them very sharp with the wood part very smooth. The can for catching the shavings is a bit thinner sheet metal than the vintage, but still sturdy. Works just like the one that was bolted to the wall in every classroom in school. This one is going onto the wall in the garage. I use pencils when working with wood. I have a couple of Panasonic electric pencil sharpeners in the house; one runs on batteries and the other from a wall outlet. Resurrected the battery one after the ex left it behind. Batteries had been left to leak and all it needed was the battery box contacts burnished. Panasonic no longer makes them which is a shame as they are the best electric sharpeners I've ever used, and they also stop cutting the pencil down when it's sharp (extremely sharp). A hand one is perfect for my garage workbench.

These GearWrench 6" digital calipers also arrived, a step up from the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh calipers I had been using. The HF weren't all that bad and they were reasonably accurate, more than sufficient for how I used them. Sent the HF to my brother who doesn't have any. These are a bit smoother and the finish on the metal parts is a bit finer. I've used Mitutoyo and they are the Gold Standard alongside Starrett, but I'm not doing the kind of precision machining or similar work that would justify their cost. Calipers can measure the dimensions of odd shaped objects, interior dimensions, depths, etc., that a rule or tape measure cannot. Primarily how I use them. Checked them against some known dimensions and they're good.

The 10" Knipex pliers wrench arrived today and joined the rest of the Kinipex family. It's going to the garage. The others are scattered among the laundry room peg board and a couple portable tool boxes. The more I use them, the more impressed I am with the design.

Here was my point about Amazon. Back in the old days, you would get fairly fast shipping, and free shipping once you met the minimum. These days, I can still get free shipping, once I meet the minimum, and the shipping is fast enough in most cases, but it's the time lapse until it leaves the warehouse that is the rub. Its not time on the truck that is the issue, it's overall transaction time. I can order on Monday, item leaves the warehouse on Friday, gets to me Monday or Tuesday. Seems like a shakedown to me for Amazon to ask for money just to get the same service level I used to get for free.

I'm not being anti-Amazon, I still shop there when it makes sense, just an observation.

I used mine for the first time yesterday. It's a pretty nice tool. Best Crescent wrench ever IMO.

I've had that same master disconnect set for about 5 or so years now Cam. Pretty decent kit and it's nice to have the tools readily available all in one place/kit.

If one ......... I think the 10". If two that's more difficult. Probably 10" and 7" or 10" and 12". Really the three piece 7/10/12 set can be found for a somewhat reasonable price.

It really kind of depends on the intended use.

For most folks the 10" and 7" Knipex Pliers Wrenches. Many would find the 6" and 5" Knipex a bit small, especially the 5". I use the shorter two for tasks involving small things and cramped spaces with the 5" used for some electronics tasks. The 10" and 7" are more like size of the common 10" Channellocks and standard 6" slip joint pliers.

Recieved these from eBay yesterdayfor 40 bucks. Tekton 3/8" composite ratchet, 3/8" impact extensions, and what I was really after, a Proto 5249xl 3/8" ratchet. Unfortunately, the listing was incorrect, as this is a 5249xl-tt, which is the tether ready model with a pin detent. While this model sells for more than the standard model, Im still not enthused with the pin detent. I could get a repair kit and swap it out, or grind the pin down some. Still undecided, but the pin will be an annoyance to an otherwise great ratchet.3510d101310d11735ab0c775c7946ac1.jpg0ead8017807d2124782a4eafb551b9f1.jpg

I find I use the 6" the most. They are great for air lines on automatic valves and gland water lines on pumps. I always pack them at work.

Those composite ratchets are great, strong as anything and very smooth. Better (or atleast as good) as ratchets 5x the price.
