Early Deltas are among the best grinders ever made, very smooth and precise. Massively built to last a lifetime, industrial duty all the way. Blocks are very good DIY grinders (I have several for wire wheel duty), and best alternatives to current Chinese ****. If you have them side-by-side, there is really no comparison.

X2, have both here, the Delta is a beast just to move it around. Cast iron in machine tools is always a good thing. No experience with a 3/4 or 1 HP block though, so one of those might possibly be in the Delta class, dunno, but the 1/2 HP and smaller certainly aren't.

I've owned pretty much every size block, and aside from the amperage rating they aren't all that much different. My Delta/Rockwell is right up there with vintage Baldors and Wissotas.

I dont need another grinder but I can pick up a Baldor grinder with stand for $50. May be able to get it for $40. It has two buffers on it now and this is all I can make out on the label. Cannot make out the HP. It is a reddish orange

Good Deal?

I've been looking for a while for a good old baldor/rockwell/delta grinder. I also see some old large (10-12") pedestal grinders now and then that run off of a belt-driven separate motor, and am contemplating that too, as I really don't want a 3 phase grinder, but I do want 1hp or more for a motor, and that may be the best way to get it the way I want it. Recently watched a 3/4hp baldor go for $500-something on ebay. I'm too cheap for that

Thats what I got, 10" pedestal with a 1/2hp 3 phase motor in the bottom, still have to wire a VFD in, could fit a bigger motor, reckon there would be enough room for a modern 1hp single phase in there, but will try it as it came first, its the main advantage of a pedestal that you can change tge motor, that and they are very stout.

Picked this up today. It was local and set up as a buffer. Stand was just a makeshift unfortunately. Looks like 1/3 HP

Here is how I found it.. it sharpened knifes for decades, until a rodent made it its home

and here it is after cleaning, but not yet finished

I would love to be able to buy the missing light/case for the left hand side, and the stand for the right

Silly nice job on the grinder.

I have the parts you need, but they're attached to another whole grinder.

Best bet for parts would be the classifieds at OWWM.org .

At the very least, I would reverse the wire wheel with the grinding wheel. It would make it much easier to access the wire wheel, and less risk of the grinding wheel exploding in your face...

Most of the parts the parts you need are on the auction site, but they are expensive.

Not sure this qualifies as a bench grinder, or even vintage. Regardless, it's a steal if you have 3 phase power and a need for a big grinder.

12" Baldor grinder. East SF Bay. $100 OBO

Memorial Day 2018 fire up of the big gen-set and grinder.

Mondays video of grinding points on 3/4" round.

Man, that looks like one that's FS near here on CL... Yours looks a little beefier though.

Found this Dayton at the flea market the other day, damn is it heavy for a 1/3 HP grinder, lots of cast iron, love the built in water trough. Runs so smooth and quiet almost can't tell it's turned on.

Congratulations on bringing that family heirloom back to a garage where it will be used and taken care of.

Plus I know you've got a sweet spot for Craftsman anyway!

Cheers

Not mine, saw this on Craigslist... Supposedly 1947 Craftsman 1/2HP...

Guy is asking $100, but unfortunately there are no guards and the tool rests are just pieces of angle iron.

Still kind of neat for its age, and the wide quench tray...

I picked up and restored this 1903 Brown and Sharpe bench grinder. The previous owner had added sealed BBs since it originally only had Babbits.

This machine is VERY original and now runs on a 1/2 hp GE electric motor from the 40s. It has a leather belt and also has a forward and reverse switch. the wheel covers easily lift out of the way with a 1/2 turn of the allen bolts hold them in place.

I attached my 3m wheels to this machine and I use it for de-burring and polishing metal. It is just fabulous.

Pedestal came from a High Speed Hammer drill press.

Check out the video.

For more of my restorations see my Facebook page at Viceman Vises

Did you get that from a guy in Palmer? I saw it when I bought a nice sander from him. Man that is super heavy duty for its size, just not big enough for my needs.

Hi Joe, no found it at the Seekonk flea market. Course most of the sellers there are like vagabonds, he could have been from Palmer, though that's pretty far away.

Here’s our Sioux grinder. Gotta be 40 maybe 50 years old. Can’t remember what car dealer we got it from. Going to rebuild it soon after I finish my vise. Two of the hardest working pieces of equipment we have that have served us for decades with little maintenance. I never thought about them before I got to reading here! 722cf380fa7b5cd38557ccfc1abacaec.jpgNow it’s time to put some hard work back into them.

You should swap the wire wheel and stone from side to side, so you have a guard around the wheel. Nice grinder.
As I look again, the guard may be able to be moved to the side with the stone, which would work nice if you fab a tool rest to fit the arm that is there.

AFAIK the USA mains voltage changed from 110 sometime in the 1930's, so that grinder could be at least that old. Power was probably rated an honest 1/4-1/3 hp back then. A contemporary grinder might call it 3/4 hp based solely on watts (746 watts/hp).

I did some searching and apparently US Electrical Tool is still in business, I can't find a website but I did find a couple posts within the past couple years of people mentioning they still sell grinders, and if you give them your serial # they can tell you the age... So might want to dig around for a phone number and call them.

Yeah, switch them over for a guard, I bet there is a spot to mount the tool rest, and add a grounded cord. Otherwise its a beauty!

This is a Dayton grinder circa 1980's, so around 30 years old, made in Taiwan. Rated an honest 1/2hp (draws 6 amps), and runs smooth as silk. All cast alloy, including the guard covers, and built much better than your typical import grinders. The bearings are shielded--not sealed--and surprisingly there are no felt dust shields to keep out the grit. I didn't open the bottom cover, but the lack of a centrifugal switch makes me believe it is a permanent split capacitor run motor like most Baldors.

I bought this one locally for $15, installed fresh sealed bearings, whipped up a stand, and added decent wheels (pic taken before dressing the grinding wheel). Traded it to my neighbor for a nice LIPO charger for my new drone hobby, and we are both happy with the deal. These are excellent grinders and remarkable values.

Very nice find! Here's a pic of my 1987 NOS 3/4HP Dayton I got a couple years ago. It was still brand new in the box, wheels never mounted. It does have a centrifugal switch, after turning off once it slows down I can always hear it click. It is a very heavy cast housing.

Yours must be an early 80's model...

Thanks for the replies. I think from the plate it is a 1/4hp circa 1971. Hard to tell.

454: I will definately swap the guard, wish I had the other parts to it, but now that I'm putting back into it I'll scrounge up some eye shields, guards, tool rests, bearings too after I clean up the motor. More tool projects...cool!

bmwrdo: You know I never noticed the cord wasn't grounded. Its been plugged into the same outlet for 25 years. Good eye.

I bought this gigantic grinder of offer up for $50 with a stand that I'm using on a 3 phase 1.5 hp baldor. This grinder is bigger than the baldor is a 120v, looks like a 12in the info tag is missing. It has oiler cups so its old On the shafts. If anybody knows any info would be greatly appreciated
