A storage company nearby had a clean out sale for abandoned property. The pictures weren't promising, but it turned out they had more than they advertised. I had to do some digging in buckets of cheap tools to find the hidden gems, but find them I did.

Supplies for future projects, including screws, box o' springs, outdoor outlet cover (coulda' used it six months ago), pipe plugs and 4-1/2" grinders wheels.

Finally, I noticed a nice and shiny wall-mount MD Corp Model A vacuum canister and called the lady running the sale over for a price.

bf73f186120bd437cf58a9faf03ba253.jpg

Her: "What would you pay for it?"
Me: "Oh, $40 or $50." (expecting a counter offer of $100 or more).
Her: "Okay, that'll work."
Me: "Okay! Uh, is that $40 or $50?"
Her: "Let's split it at $45."
Me: "Okay. How much for the rest of my tools?"
Her: (rummages through box) "How about $30?"
Me: (pulls all cash out of wallet and counts it) "I have $66 total on me."
Her: "Okay, we'll do it for $66."

:rocker:

Weather which had been awful here turned to a warmer ,sunny day and after an hour in line, I was able to get into the garage of a local sale today. The tools were exceptionally clean. Craftsman Flying V 1/2"ratchet, Joe blocks, machinist blocks, whatever you'd call them. L.S.Starrett Engineer's square,Union Tool Combo Square,Centerfinder heads,Keuffel&Esser tape measure, small Vise Grips,3/8" Craftsman Ratchet,1/4'' Craftsman breaker bar,Craftsman ball pein hammer,Fulton folding wood rule,(shop made) machinist vise and some really cool Craftsman Auger bits still with original caps. Let's just say I was just over half a hundred:rocker:

This particular Estate Sale company sets the first day of their sales for 5:00 in the afternoon. That allows working folks like myself an opportunity to attend and see some of the better stuff. Last week I did hit a sale with machinist tools and bought some on the second day ,but the sale had opened the previous day from 10am to 3pm????Retirees and pros only?

Wow, wish some of the companies here would open at 5 for people like us. That's a great concept.
Nice clean stuff you got there.

I will be starting a Mystery Tool thread on the 6-way tool. I don't think it's automotive. The ends are more like keys, for inserting into an opening of that shape. It reminds me of a fin de siècle letterpress machine tool I found last year that 3bay helped me identify. That one had three different ends.

TRIMO "USN" pipe wrench, antique Williams S wrench, a partial Williams USA (1947->) NM- series midget set, a mess of 1/2-inch drive sockets of various brands (Snap-on, Blackhawk, Duro, Wright, Thorsen, and a mystery brand), and ditto for the 1/4-inch drive (mainly Plomb, some Hinsdale).

Yeah, I live only about 15 houses away from it but the damn line up was slow to get in and they wouldn't let anyone in the garage even though the line-up seemed to be only for the house. I was in line for awhile and had to bolt and checked it out today. For god's sake buy that box so I don't have to.

That 6 way looks like a clean out plug removal tool for floor drains.

A small bounty at the Quakertown flea. Restricted myself to Bonney and Craftsman Underline this trip. 11/32” Triangle-era Outline combo, couple CV DOEs from 1935 & 36, 1020 DOE, 1/2” combo, couple short DBEs.

Oh, I spotted a curious slipjoint pliers with recurve grips (bottom) different and lighter-constructed than Vlchek (top).

The Craftsman DBEs cleaned up nicely. I noticed something, though. The opening sizes are lightly stamped or (user-)engraved on the ends. Something I can’t see on my other examples, because the ends are rougher (or because they don’t exist). Probably user-engraved, as they both have a name engraved on their shanks. If so, very neat hand on those fractions.

I saw that sale listed and dismissed it. Nice find on the vacuum canister, that will make a great addition to the new garage.

Got one of these at a garage sale today for $0.25. AC Delco nickel-plated spark plug gap gauge GG-14.

They are still being made (or at least NOS still being sold), so I'm not sure how old this one is, they all look very similar from what I can find. Going for $10-$15 online, or $2 if you find a local auto parts store selling them (apparently some NAPAs might still have them).

The newer ones might not be cast with accurate thickness, according to a few complaints on Amazon, so I would get out the calipers to double-check it before any attempted use, but I just thought it looked neat and doubt I'd be using it.

Pic from eBay, mine looks about the same except not chipped.

It was nice out so I went on a hike with my daughter and we brought along the dog. On the way home I found an estate sale only 5 mins out of the way.

dcc342184a7788205d9efa07ec136c0d.jpg

Each individual item was tagged with a description and price! Never saw anything like that.

Picked up these items plus a set of 30lb Jackson dumbbells for $35. They took 25% off each item since it was the end of day 2 but I got hem down an extra $2 to $35.

There is one estate sale company in my area that has recently started doing that kind of more detailed tagging.

I hope that sale was close to home, that was a heavy awkward combination of stuff to have to carry the rest of the way, especially while dealing with the dog. ;)

Went to a garage sale for a local no-kill non-profit animal shelter fundraiser, found a Stanley deadblow hammer, tow strap, anker power core (charging cell phones), and a squeaky toy. I always try to buy a few things from them when they do their fundraisers a couple times a year.

Today was a numerous neighborhood community garage sales. I drove through a couple neighborhoods this morning, did not see anything even remotely worth stopping for. Looked like lots of kids clothes & toys... :(

Stopped by an auction today that looked promising. It started out slow and was expensive but once they got to the good tools no one wanted to bid, everything totaled $167.50 which seems fair to me.

7pc MAC metric combo set $55

I've got a Park box as well, when I grabbed it I thought it was a power tool box but it turned out to be a file box with a really nice gold finish. Made less than 20 miles from home!

Hard to believe we don't have a good Duro-Chrome thread going. Here're the pieces I picked up today, both 3/8-inch drive. These are the first Duro-Chrome 3/8-inch drive pieces I have ever found. And I didn't even realize the "-D-I-" line included 3/8-inch drive!

I posted close-ups of almost everything else from today's haul in respective threads...

6-Way Oil Tank Bung Tool

Blackhawk socket (with the WW and a Duro-Chrome)

The Williams stuff

Wrighteousness

SNap-on sockets. And scroll down one post for the spark plug socket with the FSN on it.

Mystery sockets 31/32" and 13/16"

Thorsen socket and drag link bit

Plomb 1/4-inch drive sockets

Trimo "USN" pipe wrench

Wow, spring weather sure opens things up for some of you guys!:thumbup::thumbup:

Still just creeping up around here for good sales. My first today was a "block" sale with 3 houses. Only one had the good stuff!

I ran out of hands and arms so the lady of the house got me a box to use. Thank you lady of the house!

Apparently these guys were estate sale cleaner uppers. and these were tag ends of many estate sales, along with some of there own and their fathers.

So when I stopped I asked how much and the gut peers into the box, (many things buried, and hems and haws, and finally asked what it was worth to me I said $20 he counters with thirty, I say 25, he says 28, I said 25 again...

"OK 25 it is!"

Deal!

B&S Callipers, A mini Machete sheath, Western Hewing hatchet head, A bi BP head, 2 4" aluminum clamps, a broken ncomplete clamp on vise, (didn't notice the broken part when I grabbed it.

attachment.php

A couple of indicator lights from an old car, a siren (I believe, this may be driven by the wind? :dunno: Good size brass bell, A Stanley Sweetheart plane and an incomplete mini Union Plane

attachment.php

A SO box with a SO Knife and key-chain flashlight, and a small MagLight, and a second shor of the Machete sheath with the Sheffield made knife (Picked up quite a while back) I'll probably use with it.

attachment.php

Minumus 7 speakers with the walnut case. I'll clean these up and flip them.

attachment.php

Hack saw and empty SX metric box, a buck each

attachment.php

A Tee ball baseball (seems regulation sized)

attachment.php

With a Vida Blue Autograph? Looks right after comparing a few..

For a quarter!

The other stops:

Some self paced training books, mostly for masonry, from the 30's to the 50's The hitch adapter for 1-1/4 to 2" receiver, a small metal box - All for $7, and at another stop, a First aid kit. for a buck!

attachment.php

The First aid kit looks to have sat well protected, and NEVER used... I found a copyright date inside the booklet: 1942! :eyecrazy: This one is literally a museum piece!

attachment.php

A second trip back to where I got the first aid lit got me this Aladdin Model B, mostly there. (missing the burner and glass adapter, a wick, and the chimney. I may have those parts...)

attachment.php

And this light duty hitch carrier. and I got to use the 1-1/4" to 2" hitch adapter right off the bat!

Hard to believe we don't have a good Duro-Chrome thread going. Here're the pieces I picked up today, both 3/8-inch drive. These are the first Duro-Chrome 3/8-inch drive pieces I have ever found. And I didn't even realize the "-D-I-" line included 3/8-inch drive!

I posted close-ups of almost everything else from today's haul in respective threads...

6-Way Oil Tank Bung Tool

Blackhawk socket (with the WW and a Duro-Chrome)

The Williams stuff

Wrighteousness

SNap-on sockets. And scroll down one post for the spark plug socket with the FSN on it.

Mystery sockets 31/32" and 13/16"

Thorsen socket and drag link bit

Plomb 1/4-inch drive sockets

Trimo "USN" pipe wrench

I put my keeper set into my new Duro box I posted yesterday. Then I did the filter down of the rest of the D-I tools.
Lugz,
Check out the mostly D-I 3/8” set I’ve been working on for some time. It’s on the upper left.

I had a really good day. I Found an estate sale on craigs list "by appointment" and noticed an old toolbox in one of the pics. Got the first appointment for this morning and showed up early and emailed the guy I was out front. He takes me over to the garage and when he opens the door I can smell that old oil & grease odor. When I spotted an old-school Snap-on box in the back I knew I was going to spend an awful lot of money. Guy let me have my way with the box and I emptied out all the Snap-on and Mac Tools. I'll probably spend the next couple of days sorting through everything and I'll post a better pic.

And this light duty hitch carrier. and I got to use the 1-1/4" to 2" hitch adapter right off the bat!

If that HF carrier is as good as their scooter version (the one with the ramp), and I suspect it is, then it will serve you well.

I have the ramp version. I reversed the rails and put in spacers to widen it. Now it hauls a 28" snowblower back and forth to clean my grandmother's driveway in the winter.

I see a pile of camping gear piled under a cargo bungee in your future.

I didn't go to any sales this week because I was having my own garage sale. I didn't actually bring out much tools, mostly the import stuff that accumulates. Highlights that sold were a fire hydrant, garden cart, Coca Cola shelf, Niehoff ignition cabinets, Louis Lamour westerns collection and a few other things. Still too much stuff in my house garage LOL

I'll probably do a couple of things with it. Not sure I like the extension the adapter gives, but I'm also thinking of adding a receiver hitch on the trailer and sticking it back there, and making up a vertical adapter for simple transport while towing. I'd like a simple way to have it on the rig without it sticking out flat, as this would make getting a deer back to camp a LOT easier! Firewood also...

All three deer the past two years have been a bit of hassle...

For the fourth Weekend in a row, rain and cold weather here.. in Texas.. in April... its supposed to be 100 degrees by now... I hit a few estate sales. there was only one with any tools to speak of. The guy was standing in the middle of his little shop, writing down everything you bought and asking you how much you'll give for it. Every other thing you pick up, he was keeping... no pricing what so ever. Ended up with a hand full of small B&C asrt clamps, a couple of hammers, pair of Vise-Grips, Dremel set with flex shaft, Florida Pneumatics DA sander, Devilbiss Nailer. All for $15. not too bad, hopefully, the flea market will be open tomorrow!

I've had that exact same model MD for the house over the past 25+ years and never a problem with it. Their website has everything you need to hook it up.

A small group of us have collected WWII manuals where all the automotive maintenance tool-sets and equipment are listed and shown in photograph-based figures. 41-C-15 was the Federal Stock Number from the late 1930’s through 1953. It won't be marked on the cabinet. Nobody has found any that were marked. The number and configuration of the drawers changed slightly throughout the late 1950's and 1960's, as did the Federal Stock Number. Trust me, yours is a genuine WWII 41-C-15. The later models were marked with little data tags that often included the FSN (7130-330-0130), the mfgr, and a contract number embedding the date.

Haha. At my ordinary flea market no less!

What you're looking at in that photo is a Mobile Repair Shop on the back of a GMC 2.5 Ton 6 x 6 truck, otherwise known as a CCKW. The original LIFE magazine image only gave the year and general location as I recall. I identified it by correlating the type and number of the various tools, including the 41-C-15 cabinets, to the figures and Standard Nomenclature List in an April 1945 US Army Ordnance Dept manual. The Ordnance Dept had responsibility for maintenance of all tracked and wheeled vehicles. They ran their whole operation out of the Tank Automotive Center in Detroit. And the Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center is still located in the same exact place!

Here's another photo for you, courtesy of username 33rdsignal on G503.com, who dug it out of the NARA archives...

This is a 2nd Echelon Tool-Set No. 2 with its cabinet in inspection layout configuration. Incredibly, it matches the configuration exactly as it appears in a 1945 US Army Ordnance Dept manual. :)

No, there's not. The cabinets are a once-in-a-lifetime and sense-of-completeness find for many WWII collectors. A good source for later versions that look very similar to the WWII model are surplus sales on Army bases. Believe it or not, some of them from the 1950's and 1960's are still hanging around. GJ username Tin Medic has several of them.

That is awesome. Today I used mine as a prep table to season about a dozen T-bones. - :p
