Conduit size ...

... for four #6 wires. One "source" said 1½". That looks HUGE to me ! Looks like 1" or maybe 1¼".

What do the experts say ?

Agree with sberry-

Why 4 #6s?

If one is an EGC, it most likely can be reduced.

But that all depends on size of breaker and whether unhrounded conductors were upsized.

But if you really do need 4 #6's, then PoorOwner is correct, 3/4" will fit it. If it's a long run, and/or close to 360 deg of bend, you might consider upsizing to 1".

the type of conduit and type of wire used will have a say in proper sizing.

chapter 9 tables will give the minimum size conduit for wire size and type of conduit.

Okay, you are correct, there are THREE #6 THHN and ONE #8 THHN. Total area of the wire is (according to Table 15.1.3) is 0.1887 sq in. We are using PVC conduit, assuming Type A.

1.0" PVC Conduit (assuming Type A) allow 0.434 sq in for a 40% fill rate. I don't understand how to use the other charts regarding temperature rise, but assume that the load is 50A CONTINUOUS (hot tub).

according to chapter 9 table c.12 you can run 5 #6 THHN / THWN in a 3/4 ridged PVC conduit.

if it is underground or outdoors it will be required to be THWN, but most THHN is dual rated for THWN as mentioned above post.

If the circuit is 60 Amps or less you can run a #10 ground instead of #8.
(Edit: unless your talking aluminum rather than copper)
