BJ: we all sympathize with your door issue and i'm sure you've thought it out and decided a new door is the best option. did you ever look for a part donor truck or maybe that's not even an option?

good luck!!

You hope....... :headscrat Not trying to be negative but we all now how these things go.

(In a very poor Jedi tone) I wish you luck, young Brett.

Actually Jedi Master the Goodmark doors fit very good right out of the box. I have several truck buddies that have bought them and say they fit very well.

So here is believing in the Force.

Bret that shifter/boot is looking very like art :) Your saga on the door sounds like about zero fun..hopefully the new one works better.

Great progress and as always excellent attention to detail!

Thank You Dennis.

Drive a parts door would have the same problems. Lots of rust to repair and clean. I am going clean slate and Chinese made on this one.

Bret, I trust your new seal will work better.

Thank You 1/2.

Been too long since I have updated my thread. I have been busy and lazy about posting. I blame Motor Trend on Demand!

So where I left off which is several weeks ago. I changed the oil for the first time for me on the wife's Volvo. We had 3 free oil changes. It has the oil filter on the side of the engine facing up. And its a canister. Which I think is kinda cool.

Supplies gathered. I'm not a fan of Castrol but that is the Manufacturer recommendation and O'riellys had a $10 off coupon when you bought the 5 qt and a Wix filter. But the 3.2 takes 8 qts of oil. Holy **** my Milodon racing pan on the 383 in the Caprice only holds 7!

20180412_094448 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Here is the location of the filter. It uses a 36mm socket. So I picked one of those up at Lowes.

20180412_100858 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

New filter cartridge. And it comes with a new o ring gasket.

20180412_101746 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So I went to get a 1/2" drive ratchet from its drawer and wouldn't you know I have a 36 mm socket. I have no idea why. So I returned the one from Lowes.

While I was at Lowe's I picked up some 1/2" grade 8 hardware for the rear suspension on the 64'. There is just something magical about Grade 8.

20180412_133508 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Also picked up some Superthrive. I read about this and thought I would try it. And a trenching shovel for some sprinkler relocation I am going to be doing in the near future. They had 20% off on their Kobalt hand tools. I also bought a 10" compactor.

Bret,
I see you jumped onto the MTOD train as well, it has killed a bit of my time in the past few weeks but honestly it was worth the $50 a year to me.

Do LS engines use the 36mm for the crank like the Duramax engines? Also GM trucks/SUV's have a 36mm axle nut on the front. Glad you found the old one before using the new one.

If you have a tractor supply near you I highly recommend going by their bolt area, I can get Grade 8 hardware for $4.49/lb I believe. If I ever need something I don't have on hand I'll buy a few pounds of misc. to add to the stash.

I'm confused. Why didn't you want two 36mm sockets?

Seems a throwback to go back to cartridge filters. That does not make much sense either. So now you have to pour used motor oil down the side of the engine so you'll remember you changed the oil? It seems a lot simpler to just take a spin on filter off and let it drain all over the engine as you try to get it out.

Keep up the good work!

Hi JB. I joined MTOD right before they made the roadkill announcement. It was meant to be. I don't think LS engines have a crank bolt if I remember correctly. Now I did replace all the shocks 4 years ago on the Camaro maybe it was for a front suspension strut teardown. Who knows.

I do have a tractor supply and also a local owned place called Winkley's that sells it by the pound and cheaper than Tractor. I could spend my whole paycheck on grade 8 bolts. :D

Hi Andy. It's not that I didn't want it. Did I really need it. Besides upon returning it I used its funds towards the trenching shovel. So a tool was still added to the collection.

As far as the cartridge filter. Both Volvo's have owned had them so I assume all Volvo's do. Not sure if it is a European thing. The 2004 XC90 we owned had a V8 which wasn't Volvo but actually made by Yamaha for Volvo. But it had the filter down by the pan actually recessed up and really hard to get off. It did not have a nut on the end like this filter.

Surprisingly this filter did not leak up on taking it off. Just one little drop. A really good design.

Thanks for stopping in guys. I need to finish my update...

Update cont'd.

Along with the oil change I got a new air filter and also a replacement badge for the grill. I found a website that sells all genuine Volvo parts for I'm sure half of what the dealer charges. Actually this air filter was cheaper than the Fram part at O'riellys. 2 day prime from Amazon.

I ordered some carpet samples from ACC. Black, Saddle, and Medium Saddle.

It's not really a match but I think the Jury is out on Medium Saddle.

While shopping for the Volvo parts on Amazon also purchased this. I'm sure it won't work 100% but we will give it a try.

I really like your blast cabinet, have not seen that before.

Good to see progress on the '64. You can break it in by running up to see me in it.

Thanks Andy. My dad made it many years ago. It works really good. I need to paint then inside white and install a light.

A run to OK won't be to bad. I have a friend in Nebraska who keeps bugging me about bringing my truck up when I am done.

Okay picking up where I left off.

I borrowed my dad's a/c gauges and vacuum pump to fix the 95's A/C.

20180422_101823 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

More parts blasted. Window tracks, stepside fender braces, and bottom cab corner filler panels that go on stepside trucks.

20180422_125614 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Left my sand bucket return that goes under the blasting cabinet out during a rain storm so here I am trying to dry it out.

20180422_125647 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Getting down to only a few more body parts that need stripping. This is the Cowl cover. Combination of wire cup brush and sand blasted the rusty spots.

Bret, I think LMC Trucks has a fender with slightly less rust and fewer dents. At $339.95 that might be a real nice Mother's Day present. Think how big a smile SWMBO would have if the truck could be finished a month or even a few weeks sooner.

Great updates Bret

A 36mm socket also will work on an old VW flywheel nut (along with 273 ft/lbs of torque - from memory don't quote me on that bit). :3gears:

Sorry to see the truck is still throwing a little sand in your face, man that is a nice chunk of bog.

Cheers GB

You have been researching Bob. Already had it in my shopping cart. But I will give a hint I saved this turd of a fender to ride another day.

Great updates Bret

Thanks GB. Definitely wasn't a VW. Never laid my hands on one. I assuming bog is bad bodywork. :D

Holy inches of bondo Batman!!

One of my parts from my last order was on the dreaded back order showed up finally. Crank for the driver window regulator.

20180423_192450 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Low and behold it doesn't fit.

20180426_095943 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Not even close.

20180426_095946 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The old one had the rivets come loose. It seems to be ok. So I reused it for now.

20180426_114212 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Next up was stripping these and sandblasting all the rust spots clean. A keen eye (Andy) will notice I posted one of these already in primer in a previous post. After examining it I could see all the rust spots showing it didn't have a smooth finish. So it got blasted.

20180426_114219 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

And here they are damn near perfect.

20180426_115114 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So I was excited about the steps so I was going to shoot them sealer primer and Blue. I have the cowl covers and those bottom cab corner pieces as well. That all came to a halt when I opened my sealer primer(waawaa). Will have to order some more.

20180426_142758 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Painting more Black parts.

20180427_074126 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

These will dry to a satin sheen.

20180427_074126 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I am trying to start the truck up once a week and move her outside for some sun bathing. So this was Front End Friday. I caught the wife trying to get out of the photo. :D

20180427_131116 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180427_131109 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

So I am jumping around here on pieces of the truck depending on how much time I have. Friday I spent the morning with the wife so I didn't want to start anything big so i tackled one of the vent windows. These are one of the most hated parts of this truck to rebuild.

The driver one is missing the spring and nut and special locking washer. I found the spring in the bottom of the door but the nut and washer I will have to make the washer and buy a 5/16-24 fine thread nut.

20180427_131951 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I am doing one at a time so I can see how everything goes back together. I have new old stock glass coming from a truck buddy in Oklahoma along with the correct 65-72 factory trac bar that I need to get my rearend centered up.

20180427_131956 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

There is a rivet you have to drill out on the pivot and the window frame comes out pretty easy.

20180427_132445 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Then cleaning the old glass tape out of the frame. Glad I did this there was quite a bit of rust underneath.

20180427_132936 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

This is the division bar on the backside of the assembly and there are 4 rivets here you have to drill out to get the back rubber piece off.

20180427_134916 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Here it is with all the rubber removed. Ready to get sandblasted.

20180427_135553 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Forgot a sandblasted pic here is the primer laid on.

20180427_151150 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Some more Black paint.

20180428_174851 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Saturday morning had my oldest son MDA muscle walk at the mall. Love this little man. Rare photos of me in my post.

FB_IMG_1524967751832 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

He is supported by the local High School Honor Society who come to the walk and pull the firetruck contest you get entered into if your team raises over a $1,000. This year Team Nicholas Ray raised $2,950. The most we have in the 7 years we have been a part of the walk.

FB_IMG_1524967747486 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

His teachers from school even came to support him.

FB_IMG_1524967739357 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Back to this turd of a fender. I always thought this fender looked a little wonky. Now I know why.

20180428_163506 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

More inches for you Dan.

20180428_163504 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Took me 3.5 hours to strip it clean.

20180428_163459 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

2 holes again at the back for the previous bumper that was on it.

20180428_173539 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

And 2 long creases to work out. And its oil canny above the top crease. :p

20180428_173543 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180428_173548 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Okay caught up to this morning. Did a sandblasting session on all the heavy rust.

20180429_100024 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180429_100029 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180429_100036 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Worked the creases out the best I could. Got the oil can gone.(thank god). Knocked out about 30 dents and high and low spots. Then went around it with a 36 grit on the right angle die grinder and knocked down high spots. Then finished up with 60 grit on the DA sander.

20180429_140746 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180429_140800 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180429_140751 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

20180429_140804 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Got the inside clean too.

20180429_140829 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

That's it for now. Next up is welding up the 2 holes. I did spray rust inhibitor on a few places that I couldn't get all the rust. Mainly around where the big dent was and a couple places on top.

Next thing will be skim coating the whole thing in body filler see if we can dress this pig up with some lipstick.

Damn I'm tired after reading about all that.

Bret, I had two questions after reading your post.

First, who or what caught your attention at that moment or are you just looking for an escape route?

Second, according to Amazon I saved money on a recent purchase. Rather than buying another tool, is there a way I can add $50 to help Team Nicolas Ray reach an even $3K?

Only you Bob. I honestly thought I wouldn't be in the photo. As to what I am seeing who knows. The walk was in the Barton Creek mall which is South Austin and there are some weird people down there. They call themselves "Keep Austin Weird" people. I try to stay away from them as much as possible.

Second I appreciate your offer but the Mrs. informed me after all was said and done we hit $3200.

Aww, Bret, it just needed a coat of paint. I'll wager the fender had the Bondo in the fall of '81 so you're not really getting it back to like it was then, are you?

Glad ya'll met your goal. Next time, give GJ a chance.

That is very true Andy. I have never thought about asking members on GJ for donations. I feel kinda funny about it. I am sure there are many that would contribute. I suppose next April I can give it a try.

You don't have to beg or even ask. All you have to do is inform. Anyone who would like to participate is welcome, anyone who wishes to not participate can remain anonymous, kind of like on an internet forum...

Oh, yeah.

Ok time for another update. I have been lazy again about updating.

So from where I left off.

I started rebuilding the Driver door vent window. I am waiting on some original factory clear glass from a truck buddy and I need to order some glass setting tape from Classic Parts.

Jay made a 140 cupcakes to give to the 5th grade class to thank for their donations to Nicks walk.

Got a package from Amazon last week that had my TCI TV cable corrector kit in it. Apparently Amazon thought it was a delicate trans cooler as they packaged it really well.

20180509_152838 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

All of that for this.

20180509_152914 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Here was my first problem. The throttle linkage(which is not factory) was obviously in the way. I thought for a little while on how to fix it. Spent some time on MCmaster Carr and had my shopping basket full when I figured out how to fix it for free. I still need to order 2 helm joints and a new rod to replace the one I have.

First I took off the bar from the accelerator assembly and extended it up. I am trying to decide if I will weld it for safety or just make an entirely new bar. The hard part will be cutting out the half moon hole needed at the bottom to attach it to the accelerator shaft.

That is much better.

20180510_093804 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

My second problem was this bracket had too much powder coating on it and the tv cable would not lock in. So I ground the paint off on the backside.

20180510_101731 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Finally everything installed including the bracket that goes on the carb linkage for the correct geometry for the TV cable. You will notice I have not put tension on the cable yet. Many videos and websites describing how to do this properly. I did several test drives trying to get it just right.

My order of Epoxy DTM primer also showed up so I can spray some body panels with final paint. YEAH!

And then all of sudden these three things showed up at my house last Friday. WTF!

His pro photos. His name is James Bun. He is a rescue and 4 years old. Already potty trained. I didn't know you could potty train a bunny. I am still heavily against this smelly thing in my house.

I bought some succulents from work and the boys and I painted some pots to give to Mom for Mother's Day. She really liked them. The boys spray painted them and I did the letters in my best 9 and 11 year old version.

After a whole morning worth of test drives and the engine bay getting to full operating temps my neat wire loom didn't hack it.

Going to replace it with some aluminum tubing.

So that catches me up to yesterday. I spent all day cleaning and detailing Jay's car. And this morning it is pouring rain. Oh well it has nice water beads all on the paint.

Couple of idea pics. I love these wooden rails on this truck. Jay is not sold on it yet.

And this what my wood bed will look like with the Black paint. Except mine will be Satin and won't have wheel tubs.

Still trying to decide if I want to run the stock bumper or no bumper and a roll pan with exhaust out the center.

Andy I found this hammer **** shot on Instagram and thought of you.

Not sure what I am going to work on today with the rain pouring. I was planing on detailing the 95'. Obviously can't do that. And way to humid to do any bodywork. Hmmm...

Good to see them rolling down the street. But that Caprice needs 20" wheels to fit in down there.:bounce:

I love the wood side boards but around here you put the wood on the inside of the stakes.

Nice hammers! Just a tease shot though, I can't see much of the handles.:pimpflash

Cupcake production was impressive to say the least!

You'll get used to the rabbit odors.:lol_hitti You owe it to those two boys.

Andy that is my biggest fear in selling the Caprice. It will end up as a Donk.

The wife has Scentsy warms throughout the house(before the bunny) and now there are 2 air fresheners that put out a spray "every 9 minutes" like in retail bathrooms. They are keeping the smell at bay as long as "those two boys" empty his litter box every morning.

Yesterday it rained from 5am until about 3pm. We got 2.25 inches of rain which we needed. So I didn't make it out to the shop until about 330 when the sun came out and I dried off Jay's freshly waxed car.

Then I found a few odd jobs I could get done before the end of the day.

I did a quick cleanup on one of the fender badges for the 64 and I think it looks pretty good for being 50+ years old. I have a cool little way I am going to reproduce the red paint area.

This is one of my favorite things about the early C10's the cool badges each different year had.

I spent all of today working on this rear fender. The top is very close as is the front. Just a little bit more mud on the back where it has the crease.

20180521_155826 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Andy it still has bondo on it but not a 1/4" thick. Will get this pig looking good with some lipstick and color.

And my ice maker on the fridge decided to stop working. So quick solution was buy a bag of ice. Dive into that later in the week. I just got the dryer fixed!

BJ: your truck just keeps looking better everytime i look at your thread so keep up the great work and IT WILL BE FINISHED SOME DAY SOON.

sorry i've never owned a fridge with an icemaker and even plumbed for one when I remodeled our kitchen 20 some years ago. I need to remodel the kitchen again cause after raising 5 kids and their friends and ours it needs it and I'll probably still plumb in an ice maker pipe just in case we sell or maybe get lazy and buy a fridge that makes ice. we've never liked the taste of the ice cubes and i use frozen old A&W glass mugs for my ice tea.

carry on and i'm still trying to chase down that shipping guy to send you some wood scraps for your little projects, but he's MIA at the moment cause he says he's moving his STUFF.

we have wild rabbits in our neighborhood and probably cause some pets were left out. sadly my cat takes care of a lot of them cause she might only eat one brand of tuna wet cat food, but if the store sold fresh rabbit I bet she'd love it. best of luck with yours and hope your boys and family love it and keep it inside away from the cats and big birds flying by.

Uh-oh! Looks like you have the GJ icemaker virus.:(

Yea I checked all 6 symptoms Mr. Google said it might be and I confirmed its the actual ice maker itself. So its "only $94". Sounds like a $ 2.00 bag of crystal clear ice from the Grocery store will work for now. I only need it for my Ice Tea.

Bret, I'm so sorry. Time to start the search for icemaker 0.

It will be an easy fix.

Thanks for stopping in Drives. Yes the place we adopted the bunny from said if we have him outside to make sure we are there or have him in a cage with a top so he doesn't get carried off! I didn't know Cats would eat them. That is a pretty big meal for a cat. He is a big boy.

Today's update. I have almost 20 hours in this fender including stripping it down. Seems I am a little on the slow side. I got it ready for some high build primer and just ran out of steam today. The humidity and wearing my mask for 4 straight hours just drained me for some reason. Hopefully in the morning when I shoot it all my hours of work will pay off.

Wait another 35 years and tell me again about running out of steam.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Too bad about the sensor wire. I would just have hung it from some baling wire to hold it up.:lol_hitti

I'm eager to see the fender shot as well. 20 hours is significant!

It's getting closer.
