I've been looking for a small arbor press off and on for the past year. In last weeks search I found this press that, while small, was just too nice to pass up. had to freshen up the blueing and remove a bit of rust but was in really good shape.

The ram is a dovetail with the rack cut into the flat and the base was hand scraped, though quite a bit of wear since then. The base is 3" by 4"

Looks quite familiar. This one has "NO. 1" in the casting and GAB stamped in the top of the casting next to the ram. Otherwise it is unmarked. It was too cool to pass up at a garage sale.

Can anyone tell me more about it.........rating, value, etc?

The base is 3" thick, the square press is 1-1/2", over 26" tall, nearly 9" wide and around 20" deep

I can only find "201" being the marking on the bottom

The teeth are in great shape and the lever handle moves freely and very smooth

Oh yeah, VERY VERY HEAVY!!

I need to clean it up and use it

I found out that I have a 6 ton model

I want to restore it, the finish atleast

What is the best way to get the finish off, minus a sand blaster

Looks great......what did you use to strip the old finish? Or did you paint over the old?

The old finish was fairly tired and chipping. In my case I was able to use a cup wire wheel on an angle grinder to get most of the rust and paint off. I really like the Dewalt knotted cup wheels.

After I got done getting the paint off, I smoothed out the casting a little bit with a flap wheel on an angle grinder. This Step is unnecessary but I wanted my finish to be a little smoother and what the casting would offer.

Few coats of paint later, and it's back to its original glory.

Greenerd definetly made a nice press. Sometimes I wish mine was on a bench. I wouldn't be limited to the size of the chip catcher underneath of the ram. Also it would get me some more floor space. I just can't seem to part with a matching stand though.

Keith Rucker of OWWM tours an old fashioned machine shop and at 15:14 there is a great old arbor press.

Well the tear down went smooth with no surprises, other than the bent lever/handle with a mushroomed end.........stuck in the pinion

Need to decide what to do with it, straighten it or replace it

All the teeth looked great and there was plenty of thick grease packed into the valley

Next step is to degrease it all and start removing all the paint

I am not sure what purpose the hose clamp served

The paint is slowly coming off, using a variety of stripping methods

Hopefully within a few days I can get a good coat of metal primer on the press to seal it up and keep rust away

Just cleaned up and painted Greenerd no 3 & No 2 with pilot wheel. I like to grind the last 2 teeth from the ram on lever type arbor presses because it allows you to ratchet the handle to the position you need

This has probably been shared hundreds of times, but this is an old Jacobs chuck that I had laying around. It really needed a rebuild, but as a garage sale find for less than a few bucks, I was not too concerned about it.

I set it up in the mill and pocketed 4 spots for magnets. Now I am able to use the chuck to hold punches and pins. Almost like a third hand when I can't hold everything at once.

That's a great idea - I'm going to copy it, thanks.

Here's my submission guys. Dake #4 12 ton floor model press. 1350lbs of pure American muscle. This one once resided in a General Electric plant l, tho I do not know which plant that may have been. I scored this out of Newburyport, MA from a guy who didn't even use it. If anyone reading this owns a Dake #4, I'd love to see some pics of yours as well. Love these big old arbor presses guys. Super useful in the shop.

Here is my project, all done

I wish it wasn't missing the ratcheting assembly

The solid steel lever is NICE!! Made from 1144, it is 7/8" diameter and 32" long. Both ends are drilled and tapped 1/2-20, about 1-1/2" deep

Its a Dake 201, which is a 6 ton model

I ordered the 1144 solid bar drilled and tapped so maybe down the road I would add a ball end or something different

D45, there is no model 201 in the Dake lineup. The 201 you are seeing is just the casting number and not a model number. Its hard to tell the weight and height/size of your press, but if that is truly a 6 ton arbor press, then its either a model 2, a model 2B, or a model 2 1/2. These are the only 6 ton models Dake makes and they are 260lbs/280lbs/315lbs respectively. All of the above are at least 26" tall and are compound leverage mechanism presses. Are you saying yours once had a cimpound and ratchet lever mechanism?
I'm wondering if yours is actually a 3 or maybe a 5 ton model?
Or perhaps I have grossly misjudged the pic you posted! Thanks for posting the pics. I love seeing any and all Dake presses.

It says "201" right on the side

It is missing the top compound ratcheting assembly

The press is well over 2 feet tall and easily weighs over 200+ pounds

I've got a couple; a Japanese Made Kabako press - which is probably about a 3 ton press. But I can't find anything about the brand online, so it's just a guess. Regardless, the press is a beast.

IMG_0461.jpg

Other is a little Greenerd press that I picked up and restored one weekend. Fun little guy.

Picked up this small Handy press today for $18. It does not have a bottom plate and the ram is very short for some reason but I will make it work for the times I need a arbor press.20180617_115132.jpg20180617_115136.jpg

This nice Famco was in the scrap iron bin at my last job. It was later disposed of in a more appropriate manner.

Please excuse the mess that is the current state of my workbench.

Newly acquired Greenerd No. 3 in very good used condition:

I believe the anvil is original to a Buffalo arbor press but came with the Greenerd and fits the table very well.

Here is a photo showing perspective in size of a Greenerd #2 vs a Greenerd #3. No longer have the #2. And in the 2nd photo a #3 vs a #1. Wish I still had the #2 so I could line them all up in a row.
