Vintage S-K Tools

They changed the size of the T-bar after the war to a smaller diameter. Should be the same diameter as the wartime T-bar and unmarked but in chrome. Knurled on only one end to keep it from passing through the breaker bar.

I haven’t heard that terrible thing about him. Since he has a daughter playing college basketball, he may be more of a hoops fan. I would send him one if I had an extra.

Like George Washington, at whose namesake university my daughter will be playing basketball (starting June 28... let's not rush her out of the house just yet, Don, she's my last baby girl), I cannot tell a lie! I am not a Giants fan. But, I am most certainly not a Dodgers fan, either. At the risk of losing an S-K 1/4-inch crossbar due to intra-National League animosities, I am a Phillies fan. (We are a little out of place on the Jersey Shore just north of the Manasquan river, the fuzzy unofficial geographical dividing line between Philly and NY sports fans here in NJ, but my wife is from Philly and I was born and raised in the Pennsyltucky sticks. See pic 1, taken February 7. See pic 2, taken a few moments ago! We usually alternate the banners season to season, but I'm not sure that one is ever coming down. Maybe if the Phightin' Phils can cut down on errors and close more leads than they blow...).

Current status of my S-K 1/2" drive knurled set that I began collecting a couple months ago. Picking pieces up 1 and 2 at a time at flea markets and estate sales. I have a few extra of a couple sizes if anyone is needing something. Does anyone know if the extension I have is period correct for the knurled sockets?

What "brand" SK is it marked with? Your extension has 2 bands/rings which to me indicates later.

My best guesses (mostly based on SK history and my Socket inventory list where I tried to keep track...):

SH Tools: Early 30's-~58
SK (No Tools) and Knurled 58-after 62 (when Wayne picked them up and it was SK Wayne)
SK Wayne and Knurled after 62 but WELL before 69 (when Dresser buys Symington-Wayne )
SK Wayne and 2 band/rings (Your extension? Not sure I've seen a knurled extension...) - well after 62 until 69 (when Dresser buys Symington-Wayne )

I believe Dresser kept the 2 bands and dropped the "Wayne" in 69 after the buyout

I found an SK Tools board today at the flea. For $5, there was no way is wasn't going to follow me home!

Looks to be for wrenches. Needs a little TLC and some elbow grease. Should clean up okay.

I don't know jack about S-K production from later than the 40's, but I snapped a pic of this complete set at the flea on Saturday. The vendor has been hauling out the complete late 1950's Williams set you can see behind it every other week or so since last year, but this is the first time he's put out this S-K set. I don't know what era it is. I thought 60's just looking at it. Looks like the same logo as on that board. He wants $85 for the S-K and $175 for the Williams (I've posted pics of that before). Both NOS. Unused.

I found this half inch breaker set at the local flea this weekend. 1950s along with the paper 4517 set number label still on the side. It's missing the 1 1/4 socket but other than that it's in almost mint condition. It even has the T bar still with it. Twenty bucks took it home.

Very cool board. Thanks for the feedback. I seem to recall reading that the diamond SK logo stuff was earlier but I'll have to defer to you if they and the knurled sockets are from the same period. Here are the sizes I've found thus far: 1 1/8, 1 1/16, 15/16, 7/8, 13/16, 25/32, 3/4, 11/16, 5/8, 19/32, 9/16. If you happen to find knurled S-K's in your extras, I'd be glad to trade or buy some to help fill holes. Thanks!

My neighbor brought me up some tools from the LA area that he got over the winter. The sockets were mostly S-K knurled 1/2 drive and chrome. There were several of the 32nd sockets which I rarely see. There were also a D-I, a Plomb and some Craftsman. They’ll need some cleaning.

Last weekend, Provincial was kind enough to trade me a ~1940s 2d chest. I had one previously but sold it because it was missing the front cover and a handle. This one is complete and in excellent shape. I started putting my diamond logo tools in it tonight. It's not big enough to house any of the boxed sets I own, with the exception of 1/4" drive.

PS - I noticed tonight for the first time there are two different sizes of holes for the T-bar on the 1/4" breaker bars. See picture number 5 and the two breakers up front. Anyone seen that before?

I was looking over my knurled 1/2" drive sockets today and these jumped out at me - two S-K 4V118 6-pt, 9/16" sockets stamped "not guaranteed". Photo is taken next to a 40118 6-pt, 9/16" socket for comparison.

I'm sure the question has been asked and answered before but I can't search with my phone's browser.

Also, how many socket sizes were available in 6-pt, 1/2" drive? I have 7/16", 1/2", & 9/16" only.

I read on here before, SK made thin wall sockets for tight clearances like connecting rod bolts. The walls are thin enough, they did not have a warranty.

It looks to me like the 6 point conventional sockets were only offered in those three sizes. Apparently during the Wayne era those three sizes were only offered in 6 point. The 4V118 sockets are for Ford connecting rod nuts.

I spent some time cleaning the S-K 1/2” drive sockets. They cleaned up pretty well. I found one of the Ford rod nut sockets but mine wasn’t marked No Guarantee. The 6 and 12 point 7/16” sockets all have the same part number. The one on the far right is S-K Wayne.

I spent some time today trying to organize my new S-K tools into the box I posted upthread. I already had the 1932 1/2” drive set in the box so I went ahead and filled up the top. I then put some S-K Lectrolite wrenches and some other sets into the two drawers.

I rarely go out of my way for s-k sockets but they seem to accumulate anyways. Picture 7 in my post yesterday shows all my extra 1/2" drive knurled sockets (including Wayne). With the exception of my 31/32" (acquired from Twertsy, iirc) and 1 3/16" (swap meet find) all those duplicates came from larger purchases like full tool boxes at estate sales, swap meets, etc.
