Hammer time!

So this old Stanley dowel machine presented me with a stuck cutter today. They torque down when in use and also tend to rust a bit in place. Getting it loose is a challenge because of the spinning shaft. Normally I just pick up a scrap piece of wood and whack at it. BUT now I have a hammer made from soft Andyluminum. Two whacks and the cutter was freed. It was nice to put the hammer to work. Now it can earn its keep around the shop.

Handy: nice work attaching the antenna to your chimney!!

how is your reception now inside and around your shed/shop/paint booth/broom room?

could the crack in your trivet maybe be from some impurity in the material you used from one of the muffins? hope you figure it out cause you were pumping those nice gifts out of the forge and mailing them all over the world at a nice pace.

hope the doctor's appointment went as well as could be expected with your bride. how's your health which seems pretty good at the pace you keep doing stuff?

enjoy your SATURDAY and i'll certainly enjoy mine.

I noticed a cold Heinekin in the Coke machine so grabbed it and hope that was ok or since i'm a middle man for good beer it won't be long before i can return it.

cheers

Better screwed up than falling down. Hope the booster boosts boastfully.

Sent from my LG-H918 using The Garage Journal mobile app

I can report the booster boosts boastful boasts bountifully.

Good one Andy:thumbup:

Is that a piece of silo fill pipe you've used for the blacksmith chimney ?? :lol_hitti

Ummm, no. It's piece of HVAC ductwork an old friend gave me when he sold some land. He had gotten too old to want anything (it can happen) and told me to go get what I wanted. A string (over a ton) of 5/8" sucker rod was there which I am still working off. There was stuff I left but thankfully can't remember any of it now.

Andy glad you go the antenna up so know I can get a hold of you while you are out working in the shop. :D

I have caller ID...

Sorry, I think the technical terminology is actually Andyluminium.

Glad you were whacking with my hammer. And you got it off

I'd really like to see some pictures of hammers with their battle scars.

how is your reception now inside and around your shed/shop/paint booth/broom room?

Depending on signal on the roof. I have four bars throughout most of the shop, three in the paint booth

After review, I think was shrinkage. If I had to scrap half the trivets life would still be good.

:) Things are good, but you won't find any beer at my home. Health is good!

Hmmm, split right between Family and Fun.:lol_hitti

Hope you have time to get out in the sun :bounce:

This makes me smile :)

What makes me smile is when my dear wife can call and get me while I'm in my shop. It is a very wonderful thing.

Other wonderful things are happening to me. I received a package from Jim Reed. What a gift. Thanks, Jim!!

It's some kind of plumbing fitting.

attachment.php

It is solid brass.

Nice!!

This is a gift I can cut up and utterly destroy.

While making something of it.

Thank you very much, Jim.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot.

Jim also sent me a 1" R8 milling cutter with indexable carbide cutters!

Thanks, Jim. I had a 1-1/4" and a 2". This will fill a needed gap.

attachment.php

Looks almost new, if not new.

Stored right next to the mill. Second tool from left.

Thanks, Jim!!

I guess my memory is slipping. Jim also sent me an angle vee block for the mill. Very nice precision tool!!

attachment.php

It is highly polished. In fact it was hard to get a picture without my reflection or the glare of the lights. Made in USA.

The vernier has readings for 10 minute adjustments, and they are large enough you could estimate 5 minutes if you were so inclined. A very nice tool. For those who aren't in to this kind of stuff, there are 60 minutes in a degree, and 60 seconds in a minute. So 10 minutes equals 0.167 degrees. 5 minutes would be 0.083 degrees.

We had a square day here today, at 90 degrees. 90 degrees to what? I digress.

I can't thank you enough, JIm!!:bowdown::bowdown:

Thank You!

Got a little package from Jim Reed.

An antique Stanley plane, No. 278 Rabbet and Filletster Plane with a removable nose to make a Bull Nose Rabbet.

attachment.php

Never seen one in real life. That is a valuable plane, I'm glad Jim doesn't know much about wood stuff or he'd never sent it to me. It is in GREAT shape with a sharp iron (what would you expect from Jim?):lol_hitti

Thanks again Jim, for the great care package you sent me.:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

Looks like you've had a bit of a boost! That mobile network range extender is a nice piece of kit. Good job of the installation too.

Shame about the casting fail. But looks like your having fun doing it again and nothing lost that cant be re-used there.

Whoa... that is some nice mill tooling and a very cool looking plane.

Feels like I have been gone for a week. Due for a Saturday or 3 from tomorrow!

Hey Andy, I have a question for you. On your old Chevy COE, you have the Chevy emblem on the front of the hood. If you wanted it to say "Cadillac" instead of "Chevrolet" and get rid of the "bow tie", how would you make the change?

Handy: i'm just poking my head in and noticed you've been busy (what else is new), but now you are getting gifts back from members on a regular basis too. looks like Jim found a few nice things to send to you and can't even imagine how hard the little CUBE was to make that Vieux sent you.

always fun looking in and seeing what's up in OKLAHOMA. good to hear the new phone boosting is working better and hope that fixed the problem.

speaking of health i'm headed to a Dr. that is a hand specialist cause i've got something I'm not sure I can cure myself even though I know good eating and exercise can cure quite a bit.

anyway I don't drink beer all that often and quit drinking pop years ago even though I love the taste of it so i'll just wait to get some cold ice tea or sweet tea if that is what you make.

cheers and have a great SATURDAY!!

Andy, that is just so awesome of Jim:bowdown:

I sent him a little home made stuff and he responds in spades. Awesome is the right word.

Looks like you've had a bit of a boost! That mobile network range extender is a nice piece of kit. Good job of the installation too.

JBLnut pointed me the right way. When my wife calls and I can answer it allows me to spend time in the shop. That was about to come to an end without phone service.

Shame about the casting fail. But looks like your having fun doing it again and nothing lost that cant be re-used there.

Of course failure is how you learn and improve. I still hate getting lessons. It is a cheap recycle for sure.

Whoa... that is some nice mill tooling and a very cool looking plane.

Very nice tooling! I need to get some sine bars and learn how to use them, but this should come in handy for a lot of work.

When I looked up that plane on eBay it took my breath away. Made from 1915 to 1943. I like.

Hope you get three Saturdays. Six is better.

You made a trivet for John L. Grove himself ?? Maybe they can start putting them on the hoods of all the JLG stuff like they used to on the old VW buses :lol_hitti

:bounce: I've got a Bobcat at home. Do you have a JLG? Maybe we could start a construction company.

Hey Andy, I have a question for you. On your old Chevy COE, you have the Chevy emblem on the front of the hood. If you wanted it to say "Cadillac" instead of "Chevrolet" and get rid of the "bow tie", how would you make the change?

Well, to get my truck to say Cadillac, I'd have to pull a classic Cadillac in front of it and see whether it would say "Cadillac". So far it's never said anything, but, then again, I've never shown it a Cadillac. I don't have a Cadillac. That would really be something if I could get it to say "Cadillac".

An idle mind is a terrible thing.

Sorry for the delay. I had to go out and look at the emblem. It is very complex geometrically.

attachment.php

Since I think the emblem has some value, I would try to make a new one rather than destroy the old one.

I would pull the old one off and make a mold of it, then cast it in a resin. Then try to measure the face to replicate in CAD. I would want to use the Cadillac script so I'd look for that canned on the internet. If I wanted block letters I'd design them.

Then I'd make an electronic model and 3D route it into the pattern. After cleanup I think you could make a direct sand casting off the pattern. Then it's just several hours of cleanup and polishing. Aluminum can be nickel or chrome plated but polished aluminum might look good.

OMFG, Look what Mickey delivered to my suite.
Andy, I’m honoured, thanks mate.
Both will be exported home to London, and taken care of.

Many many thanks.
Best wishes
Steve

That worked out well! I hope you use the hammer. Thanks for posting!!

All: Steve suggested that since he was going to Mickey's place in Florida I could save on postage by just mailing to his suite of rooms at the resort. That put me on a schedule, which I hate anymore, but mailed the stuff Monday. Our local post office said it would be there Wednesday. Hat's off to the USPS. Rain or shine or heat of day they got the job done!!

The generosity of the contributors of GJ astounds me. What fun to exchange with people you've never met! It's kind of like getting gifts from the IRS.

always fun looking in and seeing what's up in OKLAHOMA. good to hear the new phone boosting is working better and hope that fixed the problem.

The phone has allowed me to continue with some shop time. It's great. We've had calm days though, it's hot melting aluminum with no breeze. I don't know how you guys do it.

speaking of health i'm headed to a Dr. that is a hand specialist cause i've got something I'm not sure I can cure myself even though I know good eating and exercise can cure quite a bit.

You have to face the fact that medicine does work. At this age lots of people face disability and death while trying to heal themselves like they could when they were younger. Often when they finally go to the doctor it is too late. I'm a big believer in good nutrition and exercise and there are diets to cure cancer however I'm not relying on them when it gets serious. I had a skin cancer removed a few weeks ago and feel another one swelling up. Now I know.

anyway I don't drink beer all that often and quit drinking pop years ago even though I love the taste of it so i'll just wait to get some cold ice tea or sweet tea if that is what you make.

cheers and have a great SATURDAY!!

I have quit pop, for many months. Having the old Coke machine means I have to keep it stocked, doesn't it? I do not believe it is the best dietary selection I make. And not the worst.:shocking:

My main drink is water, water, cool clear water.

Thanks for the nice comments, guys!

Andy: I’m glad that jbl was able to help you out. Even thou there was some expense to solve the problem, the peace of mind it brings is priceless....... Been there and know the experience.

Thank you. Priceless is right. Mike is a very busy guy and I greatly appreciate his help. He does this regularly so his advice was not just based on good thinking, it was based on actual experience.

Now if I can just convince her to call me. She has called a few times, but "doesn't want to bother me".:(

Andy: good to hear your new phone system works a lot better. do you have a speed dial set up for your bride to dial you on her phone?

Let's agree on some items on HEALTH and agree to disagree on others cause it really doesn't matter how old you are. I heard a friend tell me the other day that a friend of his was from Lebanon and if you lived past 12 years old there you might have a great chance to live a long and healthy life.

it's 85 and sunny without a breath of wind here today so hope your day is at least as nice.

cold water is my go to drink most meals where we eat out a nice restaurant cause most times their ice tea isn't as good as what i make at home.

She has an iPhone with all the icons removed except favorites, and she can dial any of us by touching our respective names. It works well for her. She has more trouble answering.

There are always healthy disagreements on health (as well as all other subjects). I'm glad that you and I can both give our opinion without expecting anyone to follow our advice. Once they've heard the advice, it is up to them.

Interesting comment about Lebanon. I believe heredity is the most important variable in longevity. Diet and lifestyle can improve or reduce it, but genetics will determine the baseline to work from.

We had a great day. 92 with light breezes. We have still not hit 100F and it's mid-July! They're promising us 100F on 15 July. Generally when I was working I could count on baling hay on July 4 at 104 but we've only touched 100 or 101 the last few years.

Thanks for stopping in my friend.

My green sand storage which I just lined with galvanized flashing is already starting to rust. I'm not really surprised but thought I might get a year out of it. The shop where I bought the purple car gave me a bunch of stuff from a closed pawn shop. They also gave me the sign. I thought the sign had steel in it, it just had a frame of 1/4" aluminum. Heavy! I've got it cut up but had no use for the plastic sign. It's about 1/4" or thicker.

attachment.php

Today I cleaned it up and moved it into the shop. It will make a rust proof liner for the sand heap.

The guy getting the hydraulic cylinder wants a 2" nozzle on this end.

attachment.php

so I cut the cast steel end off

attachment.php

Cut the ear off with my trusty HF portable band saw (Van Goghish) and chucked it up to face it off. That sucker was over 2" thick!

attachment.php

Then drilled it and bored it out to 2.02" and stepped that out to 2.388 for welding a pipe stub on.

attachment.php

now to find a short piece of 2" with a pipe thread. Everything I've got is upset tubing from oil wells.

Ok a friend and I paid a visit to Andy's place yesterday. We casted two hammers and a impromptu wrench like the one he made for the lathe in the wood shop.

The wrench was started at 3:35 with Andy tracing his wrench head on a piece of foam. Then free handing the handle parts. The wrench was out of the sand by 4:35. Deburred and polished by 5:00.

We were there about 11 hours. David (my friend) is only two weeks younger than Andy and has been a pipe line welder all his life. And since Andy is a pipe line engineer they got along like peas and carrots. The fact they both like old rusty tractors and shiney old cars made for a very long tour as everything had to be examined while the history was discussed.

I thought about taking pictures several times but couldnt find any thing Andy hasn't showed us before. So I just put my phone away.

Glen on the left, David on the right. Hard to believe that old man is younger than me.

We could see a picture of the hammers and wrench.

Oh and you all don't feel bad about getting lost in Andy's shop on the internet. I was there the better part of the day and am still scratching my head a little.

But I do know where the coke machine is now and the cherry coke was cold and delicious.

Amen brother!!

You ought to just buy your own...

Just pick a warm day and drop by. I will have the AC on and will be pounding on something with the hammer. It's OK because now I have a nice broom to clean up the mess.

It was great having you here, I didn't mind leading you around every time.

My hammer #29 David has #30 and the wrench; he doesn't do the interwebs unfortunately.

Life is short, there's metal to melt. I'm only doing what I have to.
