Hey guys I cleaned up a couple more. Here is a Prentiss Bulldog No. 56 6" jaws, it looks like it was almost never touched. By far one of the cleanest vises I have.
The second is a Reed 203, this one is also in very nice shape. The slide has no chisel marks in it whatsoever. Lastly, I saw a large 8" vise at auction last week and didnt think I would win it but after a long wait and a certain amount of money, I won a Reed 108R. The jaws on this thing look great and the slide doesnt look like its been used for an anvil like most vises. A guy at the auction took a look at it for me and said it truly was as nice as in the pictures. Im driving down to pick it up tomorrow morning. Ill upload more pictures when I get it.

Z3: i'm always leary of what's under heavy thick paint especially when it's covering up a swivel jaw that probably hasn't swiveled in years. it's a cool vise, but you are taking a chance that it might never be able to use the swivel jaw if there is weld or JB weld under the paint holding the jaw in place.

Holland's are great vises so your call.

thanks for the info. Its only about 45 min drive for me.. Im going to go check it out . he only asking 100 CAN$ (roughly 75 american pesos?). im going to see if I can bargain him down a bit after explaining the paint job is hiding all the flaws i may find

if you look close at the pics.. you can see its brush painted.. not spray bombed.. so some of that paint may be very thick. im not exactly looking for a swivel user vise.. as the Record No. 3 swivel I have does me good enough.. and i sold an Athol 624 1/2 a while ago that was intended as a user vise.. but the guy offered me too much too keep it.

hoping to add this as a user swivel if its not too messed up.. ill be sure to keep the thread updated if i get it

Z: look at it this way if the vise works as is now for that price I doubt you'd find a better looking vise that big. AND if you can get the swivel jaw to work you've quadrupled your money or have an even better vise.

the rough surfaces at the base of the static probably are rough casting, but check to see if welded and maybe a in person view will look better.

Here's an interesting find that came from 2 different sellers.. The Cole Tool Mfg. No. 11 vise I found on OfferUp and ended up getting it for $40!! The drill I found on the complete opposite side of town and picked it up as is in a trade for something that i laid $15 for.. Mounted it to a stand and will anchor it all to the floor when I clean up some floor space.. Just used the vise to do a set of fork seals this week in it and I love it!! There's another one local as well for $40 it is just missing the mounting base.. I'm going to try and get it as well because it is in roughly the same as this one I picked up. Can't complain for only getting the vise for $40!

Jeff These are all nice quality vises and stating the obvious specially the Reed 108R! I can not recall who said this here but finding large 8" vises is like finding a unicorn.

Was listening the other day to a local radio show called the Trading Post, when heard a caller mention having a large older vise for sale.

Called and found out they were about 45 minutes from me, but that they were on my way to my parents farm.

Told them it would be couple weeks before I'd be back to farm, but if still available, I'd like to see it.

That day finally came on Wednesday, so stopped in hoping for a good condition Prentiss Bulldog 52. Turned out vise had a large broken section on slide, the jaws were welded with metal jaws and the upper back portion was broke out as well.

Instead of walking away, decided that with the handle, main screw, tabbed collar and nut, that it might be helpful as a parts vise.

Got those parts pulled and cleaned (see pics 1-3)

Decided that if I re-assemble the parts back on vise, it may keep them from getting lost or use what remains as an outside vise. (see pics 4-7)

That no 20 nut works for two other Prentiss vises i know of...the 53 and the 181. In fact, I would consider cutting, grinding the welds and adapting the jaws...just sayin'

Kid in a candy store type feeling when you piece everything together and test it out.. Simply grabbed a random wood bit and a piece of wood just to say it works and it has now drilled into something AGAIN in its life!
I'm going to eventually clean everything up and make it look pretty again.. The threads on the bolt up top need some work as that is as far down as it will currently thread in. And I need to make a handle for the drill. But for what I have into this I can't complain.

Vise - $40
Stand - Gift card no money out of pocket
Drill - Traded a set of Matco 7" oil filter pliers I had $15 into.
Albrecht chuck - Traded broken Snap-On pawn find ratchet I had $14 into.
Bag of cement to fill the stand pipe, 0.22 bolt, brake rotors were from a job I did a few years back.

I'm just happy to see this thing actually put together again. I mean what are the odds to find a complete vise and mostly complete drill in the same state just an hour apart. There is one more vise in good condition I'm going to try and get as well. Just missing the base which ***** BUT he's asking $40 and has had it listed for quite some time.. So I'm gonna shoot for $20!

Guys I found a base for my big Reed 406R. A guy gave it to me AND shipped it to me for free! I will definitely be paying this one forward, and doing him a nice little favor as well! I couldn't be happier!!!

Razor It looks very nice now, congrats!

The guy who gave you the base must be heck of a nice guy and it will be great if you could return the favor.

Ps
Now you need a swivel jaw pin for this nice 406R.

Yes for sure gman. The swivel pin and that little TIG repair up on the dynamic jaw is coming just as soon as I get around to it.

:+1: On grinding the welds flat to the sides, then the angle "cap" at an angle to the edge of the original jaws, and popping the angle off, then having a look-see at the original jaws. It might no be hard to fix up.

that job shop foundry is still in business, when i take parts over there to get reproduced i know to take used brake rotors with me to get better price. its easy good steel to melt down for projects.

Got an interesting e mail from a buddy of mine -

"I didn't know you collected vises. I might have one you might like it's old and I believe it has 10 inch jaws. Takes 2 people to lift it and the handle is probably 3 feet long. I can't remember the brand off hand."

This guy has a shop and he works on BIG stuff - farming machinery, big trucks, etc., so not surprised that he has a monster vise. But 10"? Are there really vintage 10" vises out there???

eddieK and Outlaw:

Thanks for info on the jaws.

If the jaws were the only problem with vise, I'd probably do what you suggested.

Here is some other pics of same vise from other angles.

OK, THAT's Ouch! The only structural thing not busted is the support shelf!

That one might even give Dr Scott a challenge! :lol_hitti

I have an 8” reed vise that weighs 260 pounds and it has a 22” long handle. So that vise probably weighs 500 pounds or so if it’s a bench vise. It might be a leg vise as well

Someone must have dropped the poor thing or it was not bolted down and toppled over from a considerable height! At least that is one theory that might explain all the massive damage to the various parts.

Bullet As someone once said here 8” bench vises are as hard to find as unicorns and 10” bench vises even rarer!

Now if I remember correctly you will not be back stateside from your deployment in Italy until latter this summer but if you can get some good photos or even better have someone check the vise and assuming it is in reasonable shape you might want to seal the deal and not wait that long!

That's a big boy 6" vise. The only Starrett/Athol catalog page I have shows the 626 as the predecessor to the 926 and lists the weight at 205 lbs. No surprise though as Athol vises certainly have extra "heft" in all the right spots.

Congratulations. I would have gladly taken a road trip for that one if the price was right!
